Tristan Chan

Tristan is a craft beer fanatic who originally hails from Kentucky, which used to be a veritable wasteland for craft beer. Since moving to Colorado, he discovered a passion for hops, malts, brett strains, tinctures, nitros, and all things craft brew. He created this blog as a means for his friends across the country to a virtual porch drink and he hopes that you’ll join the revolution.

2016 Super Bowl 50 Bingo Boards

February 5, 2016 |

It’s time once again for PorchDrinking’s 2016 Super Bowl 50 Bingo Boards. As a way to make your Super Bowl watch party a little more interactive aside from seeing who can inhale the most combinations of cheese dips in one sitting, we’ve created bingo boards for your party-goers’ participation. Each square should be crossed off as they occur. And sure since this is PorchDrinking, take a drink each time you cross off a square. And for added measure down your entire beer when Anheuser-Busch does air this year’s iteration attacking peach pumpkin pale ales because we know it’s gonna happen anyway. Go Broncos! Read More

Event Recap | 2016 Vail Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines

January 12, 2016 |

This piece was written and composed by PorchDrinking.com staff Tristan Chan, Cory Pelc, Kelissa Heiber, Kara Loo, Phil Joyce, Will Dozier, and Desiree Duzich with special contribution from Brittany Werges of 303 Magazine.

In a lot of ways, looking back on the 2016 Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines festival is fairly cut and dry. Everything was amazing. It really is that simple. And yet, I’d be disappointing not only myself, but more importantly organizer Laura Lodge, by leaving you with merely a singular over-the-top statement about the fest. I dare not use the word hyperbole because while my descriptions may seem gratuitous, they are one hundred percent truthful.

New Belgium Brewing Citradelic Tangerine IPA, which officially hit stores yesterday, kicks off what I expect to be one of the bigger trends for the new year. Mark it down, coming in 2016… to a snifter glass not so very far away. Craft Beer: The Fruit Awakens. Read More

Event Preview | 2016 Vail Big Beers Belgians & Barleywines

January 4, 2016 |

If you’ve followed PorchDrinking over the years, you’ll have already know that the Vail Big Beers Belgians & Barleywines (VBBB) festival is our favorite event each year. Enveloped by world class ski terrain, and picturesque mountain vistas, VBBB has become truly a destination event, one that is more prominently bolstered by all-star celebrity brewer attendees, premiere educational seminars, a home brew competition, calibration dinner, and most importantly, one of the preeminent lineups of breweries and rare beers on the festival circuit.

This year Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines returns for its 16th iteration, featuring classic headline names in the industry who always bring the house like, Avery, Dogfish Head, Goose Island, Bells, Great Divide, Perennial, etc, as well as several prominent rising newcomers like Arizona Wilderness, Jackie O’s, and Wicked Weed to name a few. Organizer Laura Lodge was kind enough to share the tentative list of attending breweries for this year’s commercial tasting taking place Saturday, January 9 from 2:30 – 6 p.m. *Update, the commercial tasting has officially sold out online however tickets are still available at select liquor stores in the Vail Valley including: Alpine Wine & Spirits (West Vail), West Vail LiquorMart (West Vail), Avon Liquors (Avon), Beaver Liquors (Avon), Riverwalk Wine & Spirits (Edwards), Wine & Wort Home Brew Shop (Eagle)* Read More

New Belgium Brewing | Blackberry Barleywine

December 16, 2015 |

ABV: 10% | IBU: 50

New Belgium Brewing Blackberry Barleywine is just the fruit forward jammy jam beer you needed this winter.

It should come as no surprise that New Belgium Brewing Company holds a special place in my heart. As I’ve documented before, I first fell in love with craft beer in the winter of 2009 while taking advantage of free tasters in the New Belgium Brewing Liquids Center (tap room). At the time, I was an AmeriCorps member serving the Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer Co, with a living stipend that was below minimum wage. So free tasters of beer was about all the entertainment I could afford at the time.
