May has arrived, my friends! Summer seasonal beers are already being poured and decks everywhere are itching for a summer cook-out. If you haven’t cleaned off your grill and fired it up yet, then you are behind the game. Cinco de Mayo may have passed, but you can still practice your grill skills with this deliciously picante recipe!
A promising craft beer scene is budding in Ogden, Utah, just a quick 45 minutes north of Salt Lake City. As the concentration of breweries grows in the valley, this northern destination continues to provide an enjoyable day trip for beer fans. Last August, Javier Chavez Jr. put his hat in the ring when he opened up shop with Cerveza Zólupez Beer Company.
October brings with it many things: changing leaves, the full onslaught of pumpkin beers and the end of outdoor parties. But my favorite part of October is, after the buzz of GABF, getting my hands on the Michigan medal winners. Luckily Michigan is a large enough brewing state that at least someone within a 30 minute drive will win something. This year, Brew Detroit snagged an International-Style Pilsner Bronze with Cerveza Delray, named after the beleaguered neighborhood just south of Mexicantown that is currently home to a lot of pollution but will soon welcome the Gordie Howe International Bridge (a welcome addition to everyone besides a company that is the literal embodiment of a bridge troll).
There comes a time where something light is needed. Something airy for lakeside Saturdays or something just enough to take the edge off a stressful Wednesday without incidentally starting the weekend early. With the latest boom of IPAs, a sessionable IPA typically comes to mind. However, on my most recent Taco Tuesday outing, I decided to return to the first style of beer I eventually fell in love with: a light, golden lager. Or in this case, El Sully, the Mexican-style Lager from 21st Amendment Brewery.

When you think of Cinco de Mayo, what comes to mind? I think of margaritas, guacamole, lots of fajitas and, of course, cervezas! Capitalized on by the beer industry in the 1980’s, Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous with parties, fun, and lots of booze. So, in honor of this 5th of May, I decided to take my own spin on a cerveza with two variations of beer cocktails. Both pack a spicy kick, yet are refreshing and go down so easy! To create these cocktails, I decided to use a local Philadelphia brewery’s version of a Mexican-style lager, Manayunk Brewing Company’s El Rio.

Mexican Golden Lager
Craft beer has been my pride and joy over the past year and the beers just keep on coming. The only problem with this is that I find myself only buying craft beers – meaning I hit the title of “beer snob”. This is not an entirely bad thing, but I feel like I am not being fair to all the other beer out there – which is just not cool. Now, I do realize that Sol from Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, S.A. de C.V. is not a typical beer that we would write up on PorchDrinking, but it is one that I personally enjoy, and absolutely love on a hot summer day. Sol, which means sun in Spanish, is a Corona-like beer, but is one that not as many people have learned to love and enjoy. For a brief history click here.
