Other Half Brewing Co. | Ivy City Lager

August 3, 2021 |

For a variety of reasons, breweries often find it challenging to produce both quality Lagers and Ales– many breweries focus solely on one or the other. One would be forgiven for thinking that the Hazy IPA-producing superstars at Other Half Brewing would be one of these one-trick pony breweries but beers like Ivy City Lager are proof positive that Other Half’s Lager game is no joke.

While many people associate Other Half with their vast assortment of Hazies – at their DC location, only three of the 20 taps are pouring a non-hazy beer — they have quietly been turning out world-class Lagers like their Zipfeltännle Pilsner collaboration with German brewing legends Rothaus, Box Car Helles, and of course the aforementioned Ivy City Lager.

What We’re Drinking | April 16, 2021

April 16, 2021 |

Spring imposes upon the world a level of uncertainty that’s both invigorating and maddening. With this uncertainty comes a full spectrum of desires; wet snow convinces the palate that we must drink a heavy Stout. Fresh, sunny days inspire us to seek out something a bit lighter and crisper.

The changing of seasons can make one reflect on getting a bit older as well. I used to be an extremely cynical youth. I started shaving my head at an early age — by the time I wanted to grow it back, I couldn’t. I was rocking the full Jean-Luc Picard by age 28. I also started feeling a bit more self-conscious about my physique.

2020 New York Best in Beer Year-End Honors

February 9, 2021 |

If there was one thing 2020 gave us plenty of, other than anxiety, it was the chance to focus on our local beer scenes. Without travel, and with many states relaxing shipping laws, we had plenty of time to contemplate the state of the world and social distance with our favorite brews. New York was the early focal point of the pandemic, enacting changes swifter than most other states, forcing breweries to adapt to the new NY normal. Much like how the vine has to struggle to produce the best grapes, NY breweries persevered and produced some incredible products this year, expanding their catalogs, increasing distribution and pushing boundaries. This list will highlight some of the best beers, breweries and stories to come out of NY last year. So, without further ado, we present the 2020 New York Best in Beer Year-End Honors.

August 12, 2020 |

Other Half Brewing today announced the upcoming October opening of its new taproom and production facility in Washington, DC. The new brewery will be the 12th brewery located in the city limits.

Other Half Brewing Company | Space Broccoli

August 10, 2020 |

Other Half Space Broccoli seems like the perfect beer to commemorate this summer’s first splashdown of American astronauts from space in 45 years. Space is cool again, with astronauts heading to the space station from U.S. soil and NASA planning a new mission to the moon for 2024. You see people wearing NASA shirts, not ironically, and breweries are pumping out space-themed beers at quite a clip. Other Half is no exception.

Ultimate 6er | Board Games to Combat Boredom

June 10, 2020 |

Year 2020 A.D: Society has found itself desperately in search of new forms of “entertainment.” Stuck in our living spaces with little variety in scenery or human contact, we’ve completed push-up challenges, donned our finest pillow-dresses and allowed ourselves to be entertained by a mulleted tiger murderer, all in desperate attempts to relieve our boredom. While I’ve plundered the depths of Netflix as a good quarantiner should, I’ve also managed to find both mental stimulation and escape through the world of board games.

What We’re Drinking | March 8th, 2019

March 8, 2019 |

This is the best time! The days are getting longer and I get some daylight when I get home from work, which makes me feel like my day isn’t shot in the dark… literally! I can’t wait to change these clocks forward. If the days feel like they are going by quickly, buckle up because they are about to speed up. It gets super busy where I live around this time. I don’t blame people for wanting to ditch their socks for sandals. Florida is a great place to warm up and enjoy a cold brew. I’ll make sure to stock up on beer for any friends or family that come in from up north to thaw out and relax here. We are working on a nice variety in this week’s What We’re Drinking.

What We’re Drinking | May 11, 2018

May 11, 2018 |

There are many events in May during which we can pour a glass of beer and enjoy our friends and families. For these instances, we have a variety of solid beer choices to share with everyone to celebrate. It does create quite the dilemma finding space in the fridge for the amount of food and beer that joins us throughout the month, but we can all agree this is the best problem to have. Cinco de Mayo or the Kentucky Derby could have cleared out room for some noteworthy beers to chill. To fill the void, PorchDrinkers have plenty of good candidates to consider this week on What We’re Drinking. Read More

What We’re Drinking | June 17th, 2016

June 17, 2016 |

Confession: I’m a theatre nerd. I don’t really know a damn thing about sports. The only things that can get me excited for a game are other excited people and, well, beer. Depending on the sport… lots of beer. But even I realize how massive the last two weeks have been for sports — US Men’s Soccer is a game away from the finals, and the NBA finalists are headed to an unexpected game 7 this Sunday. So grab a cold six pack, call up your friend with the big screen, and sports hard. Sports real hard. *clink*
