The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out next Monday, August 25th. Everyone says this every year…. but there are a LOT of great nominees. Tough to predict who will come away with the awards, but I’m going to try to do just that.

Pop Culture Pet Peeves | “Which is Worse?”

You know when you’re at a concert you’ve been looking forward to, and all those drunk and/or/loud and our tall people blocking your view take away the enjoyment? Or that guy who answers his cell phone during the movie trailers like it’s no big deal? Or those on-screen hashtags during your favorite show that are waaaay too distracting?
If you consume a lot of pop culture, you’ve inevitably had your experience ruined – either by the content itself, or the people with whom you consume it. So we’re taking an inventory here at PorchDrinking of what is THE WORST. The methodology is simple – list any two pop culture pet peeves, and ask, “WHICH IS WORSE?” It’s a collaboration of PorchDrinking pop culture experts, and debated/discussed civilly between my roommates after a night of drinking and watching TV. (LivingroomDrinking is like the pop culture offshoot of PorchDrinking). Here’s what we came up with… We welcome your votes, and your pet peeves we’ve missed.

With Memorial Day weekend comes the launch of a whole bunch of summer fun, and the pop culture world hasn’t taken a break, even as television shows wind down their season (or series) runs. So let’s celebrate with a look back at the last seven days in the latest pop culture week in review!
Cord-Cutters: The Future of TV?

I’m a cord-cutter. I don’t have cable. And yet, I love television. I love it a whole lot.
Like many people of my generation, I’ve decided to forego the old cable-box in favor of acquiring my pop culture through other means. I catch my programming through streaming services, over-the-air antennae, and a few other methods (I can neither confirm nor deny the use of torrent downloading).
This past week, I switched internet providers, still foregoing cable packages offering anywhere from 30 to 800 channels of content at an added price of anywhere from 15 to 70 dollars extra per month. Why shell out the extra cash, I figure, if I can absorb all my favorite pop culture while still cutting the cord?
Between my renewed conviction to stay off cable and the major networks’ upfront announcements this week, I’ve been thinking… what’s the future of television? What follows is one optimistic cord-cutter’s vision for the future of TV… followed by a few pesky facts that might get in the way of my dream. Here goes.
PorchDrinking.com Presents: The 24 Drinking Game

This week marks the return of one of TV’s most acclaimed and intense dramas, “24.” Federal agent Jack Bauer hasn’t been seen on TV since 2010, when the show’s finale left the door open for the potential of a movie. Fox begins the 12-week mini-series follow-up to “24” on Monday, May 5.
Anyone who knows jack about Jack is familiar with a few patterns on the show. For those of us so inclined, here’s a few guidelines for a 24 drinking game. Just for fun, we made sure there were 24 rules. Play responsibly, but remember that the real Jack Bauer plays by his own rules.

I cannot properly start this week’s Pop Culture Week in Review without giving another round of applause to Nik Heimach for last week’s PCWIR, written entirely in iambic pentameter as a tribute to Shakespeare. It doesn’t matter if the news is a week+ old… check it out if you haven’t.

Some weeks, I’m glad I wait until the last day possible to write my pop culture week in review (apologies and shout-out to the great PD editors who put up with my stubbornness). Because on weeks like this, there’s some late-breaking news and I sneak it in under the wire.
So without any further ado, let’s hit the pop culture week in review with a big shake-up in the world of television.
Golden Road Brewing on “Workaholics”

This week, two of my favorite things collided: “Workaholics,” the Comedy Central show about three slackers who live together in LA, and Golden Road Brewing, the fast-rising and absolutely amazing craft brewery from LA. The “Beer Heist” episode (season 4, episode 8) found Adam, Ders, and Blake trying to impress some young co-eds by stealing them beer. Hilarity, of course, ensued. So did the very first TV product placement that I actually enjoyed watching.
Backstory/full disclosure: I’ve showcased Golden Road here on PorchDrinking.com before. I love the place. It ships its beers in cans, it’s only a few years old, and already it’s one of the hippest and most sought-after craft beers in Los Angeles. True story: I started shopping at Whole Foods because they have a wider variety of Golden Road beers on their shelves. It’s that great.

It’s awards season. Do your very best to avoid physically striking anyone who uses the phrase “Oscar buzz” – you’re gonna hear it a lot lately. You’ll also be getting a lot of red carpet photos on the horizon – the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Academy Awards are all within the next two months. Thanksgiving Movie Pitches

If you ask the retail business, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. It’s barely mid-November, and already my grocery store is selling plastic pine trees, my Starbucks is serving in red cups, and my Netflix is recommending “Christmas Vacation.”
It’s not news that the holidays arrive earlier and earlier every year. But the real victim here is Thanksgiving. We’re just around the corner from Thanksgiving Day, and yet no one ever talks about getting into “the Thanksgiving spirit.” And I’ve discovered the reason: there’s a glaring lack of Thanksgiving movies and TV specials. Proof: the latest attempt at a Thanksgiving movie, “Free Birds,” scored a whopping 18% rating on RottenTomatoes.com. Until now. Here now, I’m going to pitch to the world a slew of AMAZING Thanksgiving entertainment. Imagine curling up in front of a fireplace with a nice pumpkin beer and enjoying all the lovely holiday cheer.

NPR – the ointment to soothe a long commute through traffic. Anyone who has ever listened to Morning Edition, All Things Considered, or World Café knows that NPR’s staff members – for whatever reason – have some very interesting name.
You know who else has weird names? The characters in the dystopian novel series “The Hunger Games.” So here’s a quiz. Does each of these names belong to an anchor/reporter on NPR, or a character from Suzanne Collins’ series?
