This week’s mini-rant is going to be dedicated to the horrifyingly low availability of craft beer in Myrtle Beach. Yes, I know that there are a few places with a halfway decent selection, BUT the Grand Strand covers a shocking long chunk of coastline. I don’t always want to drive 30 minutes round-trip just to grab a late-night sixer. Today I bought a four-pack of Miller High Life pounders in a Dollar General. That’s what I’ve sunk to. While I wallow in the depths of macro despair, I submit this edition of The Weekly Buzz.
I’m far too tired to give you a witty introduction. My body is aching. Migraine symptoms are setting in. I know that these are probably related to the amount of time I spend on Twitter, but I’m just too darn committed to compiling this dumb list of tweets for your enjoyment. My own well-being comes second to you. Submitted for your approval, this is The Weekly Buzz.
Not every beer needs to be a whale or unicorn. The humble fridge beer holds a very important place in the beer drinker’s daily routine. This is a beverage that you can enjoy with a simple home-cooked meal, while mowing the lawn or during a pre-concert tailgate party — to mitigate the need to purchase $12 light beers inside the venue. Starr Hill‘s Front Row is an easy-drinking golden ale that fulfills all of these needs beautifully.
Since I’m writing this on International Women’s Day, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all of my strong, creative female colleagues at PorchDrinking. Without them, this humble beer blog would be but a shadow of itself. Their hard work and dedication keeps this train on the tracks, and their fresh points of view help us keep our content fresh and relevant in an ever-changing world. Yesterday was Thanksgiving. On this day of over-indulgence in food and drink, the PorchDrinkers did not eschew their primary mission: to drink great beer. Not every meal may have been traditional, but we all had freely flowing craft beer in common. Whether you drank out of pure holiday spirit, or you were trying to avoid discussing politics with an elderly Fox News-viewing relative, beer is a required libation at any holiday meal. Grandma, Uncle Joe and Sister-in-Law Carol, this is What We’re Drinking.
Did any of you know that parents of a kindergartner must endure no less than four events at the school? Four. That is all before school starts. There are meet-and-greets with teachers, self-guided tours and practice school bus rides. The real kicker is that none of these events serves beer. I’m running for PTA to undo this travesty. If you have ever had Reviver from Starr Hill Brewery, then you already know that they know their way around a Red IPA. The latest addition to Starr Hill’s limited-run All Access Series is like Reviver dialed up to 11. This beer was brewed to be a sort of big brother to Reviver—a role model, if you will. I got my hands on a few bottles of Starr Hill’s Resinate, and I have to say that I enjoyed it.
It’s been a ridiculously great week of PorchDrinking. Our staff cracked into some truly great beers, which should make you VERY jealous. Whether you’re in the mood for beers that are black as the night, sour as a lemon or hoppy like… well… a hop, we have a beer for you. This is What We’re Drinking!
PorchDrinking season is officially upon us! Our nearest stellar body is pouring it’s warming countenance upon us, and it is glorious. It is important that you all show the utmost respect during this holy time of year. Dust of the adirondack chairs, oil the chain on the porch swing, and get the dead leaves out of the horseshoe pits. It’s summer, and this is What We’re Drinking.
This week had so much fun beer stuff going on that it was hard to keep track. There was SAVOR in DC, Philly Beer Week, the Firestone Walker International Beer Fest… Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! There were also a few interesting announcements and (unfortunately) a little more shady intrigue from AB-InBev. Drag your laptop out to the porch and prepare to discover The Weekly Buzz.
If there was one thing that helped me get through a rough week at work, it is knowing that the social media coordinator at Wicked Weed Brewing has a much harder job. Any time a craft brewer is bought out by big beer, you can be 100% certain that a twitterstorm of epic proportions is on the horizon. It’s a meteorological fact. Ask any scientist. I can’t even get Wicked Weed in my state, and it’s still a sad turn of events. My hatred of ABInBev burns with the intensity of a thousand suns. They’ll probably merge with Walmart next, forming the Buy-N-Large corporation, which will eventually force us from this planet to aimlessly roam the galaxy (a la the Disney/Pixar film Wall-E).

I was recently able to get my hands on this year’s four variations of Starr Hill Brewery‘s King of Hop. As a person of relatively simple tastes, my favorite version was the original Imperial IPA. The others all brought something interesting to the table, but this base beer is was made them all so good.
