Despite her recent announcement that she’ll be leaving Wynkoop, rest assured, “Bess’s Barrel-Aged Beer Babies” will live on! Back in June, PorchDrinking spoke with brewer Bess Dougherty, recording a PorchCast episode in her “happy place,” Wynkoop Brewing Company’s barrel room. Little did we know a mere 12 hours later Bess and the rest of the Wynkoop family would learn that the brewery would begin scaling back operations to eliminate external distribution AND Bess would soon decide to leave her brewing position at Wynkoop for another opportunity. In light of the latest happenings, we sat down to talk women and beer with her and hear about the latest landmarks in her career path.

This year’s Great American Beer Festival celebrates its 35th Anniversary, which means if last year was bigger, better and beerier, 2016 till be teeming at the seams. And we’ve got everything you need to know to score tickets to the 2016 GABF.

Last year’s expansion of convention center capacity brought the event from 49,000 attendees to upwards of 60,000 attendees. Additionally the extra space allowed an extra 120 some breweries to be added bringing the count up from 710 breweries in 2014 to 830 in 2015 as well as nearly 4,000 beers poured on the festival floor. It’s been a tumultuous month for Colorado breweries and an even more turbulent afternoon, as Governor John Hickenlooper officially signed Senate Bill 197, allowing grocery stores to sell full strength alcohol at up to 20 locations throughout the state over the next 20 years. While the implications of this bill will have a major impact on the way Colorado’s craft breweries distribute their product, a greater underlying rift has finally bubbled to the surface leading 14 craft breweries to split from the Colorado Brewers Guild to form their own trade advocacy organization.
