PorchDrinking’s Weekly Denver Beer Beat

March 5, 2014 |

Welcome to this week’s Denver Beer Beat. What a week huh?! Hopefully all of you cerevisaphiles out there got your fix with Pliny the Younger popping up all over town. How lucky are we to have so many chances to try that coveted brew?! How about Avery Strong Ale Fest? So much good came out of that event that I must digress on to March. March is a month of transition. Lots of breweries are rolling out all of the big stuff from winter so they can to keep us toasty and warm while also trying to provide ample amounts of spring-esque suds for those gorgeous patio days. So whether you are trying to hit those last days of stout or gearing up for an afternoon porch session, please follow along as we showcase the not-to-miss events in this week’s Weekly Denver Beer Beat.

Sidekick EPA – Two Brothers Brewing (Warrenville, IL)

March 5, 2014 |

IBU: 36.1
ABV: 5.1%

The last six months have seen an influx of new Midwestern and Colorado beers into Florida, and I, for one, am pretty darn excited about that. Founders and New Belgium are the two biggest new names in the state, but we are also starting to see some smaller breweries, such as Two Brothers. The Sidekick is the first beer I’ve tried from them. Stochasticity Project | Grapefruit Slam IPA

ABV: 8.2%

IBU: 95

I was recently asked someone in passing what their favorite citrus fruit was. Is that an odd question? I guess that’s the kind of question you ask and can expect an honest-to-god answer. Why would anyone taradiddle on tangerines? I think you can tell a lot about a person by their taste in citrus fruit – I’d venture that a majority of replies will be “ummm, oranges?”. That’s fine, oranges are good, but in all honesty, they’re the Bud Light of the citrus world. I don’t have anything against oranges or the good people who grow them (I have a glass of OJ every morning when I wake up) but this answer is all too milquetoast. There are so many varieties of citrus fruit; it’s damn hard to get anything but excited about them. The lowly citron, the mandarin orange, the lemon, the Kumquat!, the possibilities are endless. Weekly Growler Fill | National Beer News Roundup

March 3, 2014 |

So are we drinking cheap beer again or not? While American sales might be down, distributors are backing off of the craft beer craze and pushing “cheap beer” ad campaigns further. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. But it’s okay, because we still have Sam Calagione to show us how we’ve been drinking our beers wrong all along anyway.

Green Flash Brewing | Hop Odyssey Black IPA

March 3, 2014 |

ABV: 7.2%
IBU: 85

As spring approaches and Colorado’s notoriously schizophrenic weather becomes even more erratic, I find myself having an increasingly hard time deciding between a soothing, satisfying stout or a creature with sharper, hop-stained teeth. In these moments of seasonal indecision, my favor often falls on Black IPAs, especially ones crafted by West Coast breweries.

A Dream Deferred: Reflections from the UK Craft Beer Writing Symposium

February 27, 2014 |

Fourteen and a half years ago, spending an entire Saturday in a lecture hall fell somewhere between being set on fire and being water-boarded on the “things I want to do” list. Fourteen and a half years ago, paying ten dollars for beer was fine, as long as I got at least eighteen of them. Fourteen and a half years ago, a super-sized value meal from the closest fast food chain equated to a “good meal.” Fourteen and a half years ago, sitting in the Center Theatre at the University of Kentucky for my Freshman Orientation, bored and self-assured, I knew exactly who I was and what I wanted to do. Confident in my abilities and sure of the direction of my life. I wanted to be a writer, journalist actually.

Cult Beers Part 1

February 27, 2014 |

It’s the time of season when the masses begin waiting for hours to pay an exorbitant amount of money for a single glass or bottle of cult beers.  But trust me, it’s worth it.  Today we start a two part series on beers with a cult following.  These beers don’t necessarily have to be extremely rare, though most are, the only qualifier is that they have transcended just being a great beer, but more so, one that people go crazy about.

Prairie Artisan Ales- Eliza5beth

February 27, 2014 | 1

This was my first foray into the world of beers from Prairie Artisan Ales out of Krebs, Oklahoma, and I have heard nothing but excellent opinions of their creations. So when I was able to snag a bottle of their Eliza5beth Farmhouse Ale when I was back in Colorado, I was both excited and curious. It’s not that I am new to farmhouse ales by any stretch of the imagination; I have just found it extremely hard to find their beers. My only regret was that I didn’t buy more…

Ultimate 6er | The Big Move

February 26, 2014 | 1

Moving sucks. It usually takes place starting at an ungodly hour of the morning, it involves hard physical labor, scratches and bruises, and at least one or two arguments. It also takes FOREVER. Being the loving and caring people we are, we usually invite our friends to share in this very special misery, bribing them with grand promises of delicious pizza and delectable beers. I’m going to be moving at the end of the month, so here are the beers I would bribe you with, if you were to help me. *HINT* *HINT* Read More

Mosaic Black Bitter — La Brasserie du Mont Salève

February 26, 2014 |

La Brasserie du Mont Salève wears its name well: nestled at the foot of Mont Salève near the Swiss border, this French brewery has been turning out some of France’s most interesting beers since 2010. Head brewer Mickaël Novo likes to experiment with strong flavors, but don’t assume that means strong beers. The Mosaic Black Bitter is an intensely hoppy beer that surprises at a mere 3.5% ABV.

Odell Brewing | Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout

February 25, 2014 | 2

ABV: 8.5%

I am not sure which is more exciting, Odell Brewing Company‘s chocolate milk stout known as Lugene or the story behind its name. It is no secret that Fort Collins produces a lot of spent grain in order to make beer, and it all has to go somewhere. For the past decade, the spent grain from Odell’s has been picked up by local farmer, Lugene Sas to feed his dairy cows at Taft Hill Dairy. That’s an entire two truckloads a day! The staff at Odell even made a fun photo editorial of the process to show how it is used.  Read More
