The Ultimate 6er
PD’s staff helps you pick the perfect six pack for all seasons, moods, and social situations.
Many people shy away from fruit beers. They just don’t think the two should ever mix, never to dance the delicate art of brewing. But, not all great beers have to be pale and bitter, and a little sweet goes a long way. With summer just around the bend, folks are eager to get out and enjoy the warm cosmic rays. And, although all of these beers (save for one) come in 22oz or larger bottles, here is a phenomenal six pack that will make you second guess what great beer can be.
As we inch into the sunny days of May, the impending summer vacation for teachers beams like a beacon of hope, eclipsing the flickering fluorescent lights and mounting stacks of ungraded papers. As teachers, my wife (Sarah) and I use the summer months as we did as children – as a time for relaxation and recreation (albeit with supplemental jobs and some mandatory professional development trainings scattered about). But we travel, stay up a little later, work in our garden, and try to cram everything into that brief span when students aren’t around.
In honor of its return to the airwaves, and sticking with my television theme, I opted to focus today’s article on the main characters of AMC’s hit period drama Mad Men. All I can say is, I hope this 6er is better than their previews this season.
Please stop! I know the sound of beer cans smashing against the human skull is an invigorating sonic sensation but, I must digress, I’m not talking about the kind of beers you drink straight-from-the-can in a dark alley before the AC/DC metal show. I’m talking about the brews that make the true metalhead feel like a Viking rowing a giant battleship into war!
Have you ever found yourself agonizing over choosing between two beers? In some cases, the best solution is do get both and mix them. Perhaps you have heard of a Black and Tan ( Stout & Pale Ale), a Snake Bite (Stout or Lager with Hard Cider), or a Black and Blue (Stout & Wheat (Blue Moon)). Most people associate these mixed beer drinks with Guinness + ____ , but there are some other great mixed beer variations out there. I propose to you this ultimate mixed beer 6er!
Baseball is back! This season has me more excited than ever because of 2 reasons. First, my alma mater’s mens basketball team shit the bed and went to the NIT, then lost in the 1st round. LAME. Second, my Red Legs, aka The Cincinnati Reds, are looking primed for another post season run. Hopefully, they won’t lose in the divisional series like last year. Baseball and beer go together like “peas and carrots”, to quote 1 of my favorite movies. Some of my best adult memories involve baseball and consuming (I mean chugging) beers. Like that time I saw Roger Clemens make his comeback from retirement, via the minor league Lexington Legends. Man, I drank a bunch of Kentucky Ale at that game. So in honor of Opening Day earlier this week, here is my ultimate 6er for baseball season.
Nothing says refreshment quite like a good old fashioned zero ABV retro juice boxes party. You don’t need to drink beer to quench your thirst. We’ve compiled a list of old school lunch throwbacks to hit happy hour the sober way.
Grab a beer, spring is near! Finally, after a long and dreary winter, spring is just weeks away. This means, a bitter-sweet goodbye to my beloved heavy dark ales and a warm-welcoming hello to sweet and hoppy spring ales. Although these recently cold and snowy days in the Midwest region doesn’t feel like spring weather, I have high hopes that sunny days are soon to come!
I recently decided to buy only craft beer, but sometimes I still get in the mood for something yellow, bubbly and light in alcohol. If you’re trying to kick PBR for a better option, try some beers that always work for me. Here is my Ultimate 6er for the Macro Convert.
The time has come again for overused reds and pinks, chocolates and overcrowded chain restaurants. Good ol’ Valentine’s Day is back with its ever present divide between love + affection and nausea. Couples are sure to get a little more mushy and singles are likely to roll their eyes in disgust. I’ve decided to put together an Ultimate 6er for anyone caught in the middle.
As much as I love awesomely bad horror movies, this Ultimate 6er is dedicated to those of us who feel suffocated by heat pumping furnaces and closed windows. Those of us who crave vitamin D, fresh air and warmth to keep us going. Those of us who don’t have the option to hit the slopes on the weekends when the temps drop and the snow piles up. Winter compounds the seemingly easiest of activities—driving, exercising and getting out of bed. Pounds and layers pack on as we wait for the sun god to warm the earth again, so we can arise from the recesses of seasonal depression and couch-dwelling sloth. These beers will save your sanity when the claustrophobic threat of permanent enclosure begets conversation with yourself, and they will cheer you up when the funk of winter harshes your Qi.
In honor of this weekend’s gridiron showdown we decided to showcase our Ultimate 6er for Super Bowl Beers Baltimore vs. San Francisco. We’ve compiled three beers from Baltimore and three more from San Francisco to help complete your Super Bowl party libations. Vote for which lineup wins in the comments section and perhaps that will serve as an indicator for real game results.
The mercury isn’t just low in the chamber, it has actually frozen. It’s the middle of January, and it is bitter, bitter cold outside. So how in the world will you make it through the winter if you can’t hang out on your porch? By staying inside where there is heat and drinking some winter warmers, of course!
If you’re one of the lucky ones who are still partying, you may need need some fuel to start off your morning. I find that the perfect breakfast brew to help transition your morning to awesomeness is the beermosa. A combination of beer and orange juice, with a ratio of somewhere from ⅔ beer with ⅓ OJ to ¾ beer with ¼ OJ.
The League is a hilarious glimpse at what we fantasy football fanatics endure every season. They’ve spoiled us with two episodes each of the last 2 weeks, so I thought I’d return the favor with an Ultimate 6er. Pick one of these bad boys up and tune in to FX this Thursday!
Beware ye, the end is Nye!
We have officially reached the end of our time on earth. Or so say the ancient Mayans, at least.
Friday, December 21, 2012 is the day we either rejoice for our lives or shudder with fear as we greet our demise. As for me, I’m down for a celebration. My last day on Mother Earth is going to be the biggest f’ing party I’ve ever seen! Why not go out with a bang, ya dig? Let’s all die with smiles on our faces.
So here ye, I propose this Ultimate 6er with all the appropriate themes of death.
In this order you shall enjoy these lovely brews before you revel in the face of the apocalypse.
If you’re drinking during breakfast, it’s probably either because you had a bad night or a great morning. Or maybe you just ran out of OJ. But whatever the reason may be, here are the six beers you need to start off your day.
The latest, and as always, ridiculous It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia continues to a 12th season. And what better show to sit down with an Ultimate 6er for? Well, maybe not the entire six pack since some of these are strictly for the type of… gentlemen… that the series showcases. So here’s to everyone’s favorite show about everyone’s favorite alcoholics.
Election season is over on Tuesday so celebrate the end of political ads with an Ultimate 6er. According to some recent research, certain beers are correlated with political persuasion and also the likelihood of voting. Interestingly, people who drink “any microbrew,” lean to the left and are very likely to vote. So I suppose if you’re reading this blog, you’re statistically more likely to be a democrat who votes a lot.
One of my bucket list items was to go to Munich and visit the birthplace of Oktoberfest. This year, I decided to cross it off my bucket list and go for my belated dirty thirty. What started out as a trip to Munich, turned into a three week long pub crawl full of awesome beer and liquor.
After visiting six countries in Europe, I return to you with my take on some of the best beers I’ve had in Dublin, Ireland; Edinburgh, Scotland; Bruges, Belgium; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Munich, Germany; and Prague/Kutna Hora, Czech Republic. Here is my story of my trip throughout Europe, in beer form.
