Inside the Tank | Pipeworks’ Gerrit Lewis

February 25, 2016 | 2

If you’ve walked into any beer store in Chicago, and now Colorado or New York, you’ve probably seen a Pipeworks beer. Known for their unique artwork and clever names, their beers have become well-known in the city and are sought after by craft beer fans in other states. From big IPAs to a barrel-aged program that is gaining notoriety quickly, Pipeworks Brewing Company is one of the best-known breweries in Chicago. They just moved into a massive new facility recently, so I went out there to talk with Co-Founder and Brewer Gerrit Lewis.

Short’s Brewing broke the news a couple weeks ago about their intentions to begin distributing outside of Michigan for the first time. They would head to Pennsylvania and Illinois within the near future, exciting many Chicagoans at no longer having to make the trek to New Buffalo, MI for their Short’s fix.

With Pennsylvania already receiving their first shipments of Short’s, many Chicago fans were anxiously awaiting their own fix. Well, it appears now that all the Illinois distributors have been solidified, and Chicagoans can expect their first taste of Short’s beers on March 4th! Read More

Mikerphone Brewing | One Man Wrecking Machine

February 16, 2016 |

ABV : 9.75%

Commuting to work is one of life’s pleasures that many people get to experience twice a day, everyday. Fighting traffic, navigating through throngs of people crossing the street, cramming into train car nooks, tapping impatiently while waiting for a bus to show up — chances are, your daily commute provides some nice slices of stress between which you sandwich your workday.

Oftentimes, the commute ends with a strained “I need a drink!” Well, if you’re lucky enough to take the Metra, you don’t have to wait until you get home. And if you’re even luckier, the local convenience store by your stop will carry some of Mikerphone Brewing’s Big Ass Cans for you to take with. And to really kickstart your workday decompression, it’s probably best to grab a One Man Wrecking Machine. Read More

Inside the Tank | Off Color Brewing’s John Laffler

February 1, 2016 |

You’ve probably seen Off Color Brewing beer in your local beer store. The bottles stand out with their unique artwork featuring a little grain mouse. Off Color doesn’t brew your typical beer. They don’t have an IPA, instead opting to brew Sahtis, smoked beers and anything else outside the norm that head brewer and co-founder John Laffler can dream up. I sat down with John for the latest installment of Inside the Tank to get into the head of the man behind Off Color Brewing in Chicago.

“It’s Not Complicated” | My Chat with Kyle Kinane

September 22, 2015 |

In my opinion, Kyle Kinane is one of the best comedians currently on the circuit. He brought his own style to comedy, combining his enticing storytelling with an incredibly unique view on the world. Even if you don’t think you know who Kyle is, you probably do. Kyle is a nationally touring comedian with multiple specials including Whiskey Icarus. He’s been on Drunk History and won the internet on @midnight more than a handful of times. Also he is the gravelly voice of all the promos you hear on Comedy Central.

Coming up on Wednesday night, Kyle will also be the headliner at Offensively Delicious, a craft beer comedy show that kicks off a weekend full of Great American Beer Festival events (check out our preview here). Kyle gave me a few minutes to talk about his rise in the comedy world, his drinking preferences, and also his exciting upcoming projects.

Rude Hippo Brewing | Beeting Heart

July 13, 2015 |

ABV: 6.7%

Beets are awesome. First of all, their name differs from beer by only one letter. They are also nutritionally diverse in vitamins and minerals, and therefore benefit important organs such the heart, liver, kidneys, and eyes. Some folks even claim they have cancer-preventing and -fighting capabilities. I have been both a long-time beet lover and a long-time beer lover, but I never once thought to combine the two. I am certainly glad someone did. Read More

Revolution Brewing | Rosa Hibiscus Ale

July 1, 2015 |

While I understand that this is currently a tough-to-find-beverage, being that it’s only distributed in Illinois and Ohio, it’s well worth the mention. Honestly, when I first tasted the highly anticipated Rosa Hibiscus Ale, I came away with a different perspective. This initial judgement could have been my innate, strong affinity for copious amounts of hops in my beer, but as we all know we can’t always destroy (in the best of ways) our sense of taste with high ABV IPAs, especially this time of year, filled with hot day drinking, BBQ hopping, musical tailgating, etc. Session beers shine through. True to form with the season, like summer itself, it is best to just keep things simple. Subtle. The less is more approach.

Weekly Growler Fill | National Beer News Roundup

February 9, 2015 |

This week I have some very important craft beer news that you must read. First, the law makers are a movin’ and a shakin’ to make some changes for the craft beer community in Wisconsin and Alabama. But guess what? The breweries are a movin’ and a sprayin’. Yes, you read that correctly. Urban Chestnut is ‘moving’ by expanding distribution to Chicago and Cantillon is literally spraying the insides of it’s new facility with beer. Get the details to these stories and more in this edition of the Weekly Growler Fill.

Spiteful Brewing | Alley Time! Pale Ale

Spiteful Brewing | Alley Time! Pale Ale

6% ABV

Spiteful is among my favorites of the breweries I’ve discovered since moving to Chicago a little over four months ago. The Alley Time is a smash beer (single malt/single hop) made with Pilsen malt and Simcoe hops. These two ingredients come together to create a crisp, refreshing pale ale with just the right amount of bite for these warm summer days, fleeting though they may be. Read More
