How is everyone’s sugar hangover going?! I know I ate all the fun-sized skittle packs this week and very much need a candy-free weekend! Our writers have been getting in the Spooky Szn mood with some witchy brews! Kick up your feet, grab a cozy blanket, and let’s see what we’re drinking as we welcome fall into our world!
As the weather cools off, you may be left dreaming of those warm summer days when you’re lounging out and soaking up the sun. Although we’re not in the worst of the winter just yet, Prairie Artisan Ales‘ Paradise will keep you reminiscent of those summer days, despite being a Stout.
Man, this year is just flying by! I don’t know if it’s ’cause “we’re having fun” or ’cause we’ve all been so busy, but damn…here we are–May 17! Our team has been busy little bees churning out amazing content and breaking news like the Boston Beer and Dogfish Merger, all while tending to their full-time jobs, families and friends. I think that deserves a beer, or three and that is what we did! Sit back and check out how we rewarded ourselves for kicking ass–here is what we’re drinking!
Cheer and happiness and all that festive crap is important, I suppose. But once in a while, the get-off-my-lawn crowd needs a shoutout. If you love the holidays and feel all warm and tingly at the sight of fresh December snow, this ain’t the article for you, Cindy Lou Who. This one’s for the grinches, the scrooges, the grown Charlie Browns; the curmudgeonly and cantankerous cranks of the world.
My promise to you right off the bat, is that there will be no cute rhymes here. If there’s anything I hate more than holiday music, it’s the nauseating rhymes companies try to incorporate into everything. Between the stress of shopping, the weather, traffic and that unbearable Mariah Carey song, we need an Ultimate 6er – and not just any 6er – to get us through to New Year’s Day. There are 12 shopping days left until Christmas, and today is 12/12. So here’s a 6er of beers that are all at least 12% ABV to pair with the season’s most pervasive annoyances.
This week has been an emotional one as we honor the anniversary of 9/11 and watch the crazy number of storms brewing in our oceans. Even as I write this, there is a deluge happening outside my window, which means it’s time to kick back, grab a good book and a cold beer. My fellow PorchDrinking staff found some great brews this week, along with some much needed sunshine. This is What We’re Drinking.
Halloween may have passed, but my stash of “Dad tax” candy continues to thrive — my kids must pay for the right to trick-or-treat. Hence, traditionally, all Reeses, Smarties and M&M’s become my property.
As a result, I noticed an influx of new M&M flavors that I had not tried. Suddenly the classic, brown-bagged Plain M&M’s and yellow-bagged Peanut M&M’s were joined by such flavors as Birthday Cake, Pumpkin Spice, Cafe Mocha and Carrot Cake.
Of course, that got me thinking, ‘Which of these flavors would go best with what beer?’ This Ultimate 6er seeks to find the answers.

There comes a point in every hobby where you have to take things to the next level. This usually involves investing more time, energy and, most of all, money. I’m someone whose always resisted that for any hobby. With craft beer, it’s been a specific price point. When I started drinking I set a price I was willing to pay for a single bottle of beer from a store. Surely, I thought, I’ll never actually cross that line. Nothing can be that good. Well Porchdrinkers, Prairie Artisan Ales finally blew me to the next level of craft-dom with BOMB!, its imperial stout.
We’re now in the final throws of October. It’s getting dark earlier, and our beers are getting darker, too. All those dark, roasty malts will keep us warm in the cold months to come. Say goodbye to your lawnmower beer, and embrace the arrival of fall. Prepare to discover What We’re Drinking.
We don’t always solicit advice from complete strangers, but when we do, it’s usually going to be about which beer to choose.
