Around much of the country it’s looking like spring is right around the corner, or depending on where you are spring is already in full force. With spring comes patio beers, summit brews, and anything that involves being outside and enjoying a good beer. Not all of our staff has fully embraced the outdoors quite yet, but regardless of our activities, one thing we all have in common this week is enjoying great craft beer. This is what we’re drinking.

Can you believe we are already one month into 2021? It’s tough to say that 2021 is much better than 2020, so far. But, one thing hasn’t changed: the beer produced by a nation of brewers remains good as ever. The PorchDrinking team certainly loves to demonstrate that with photos of their beer-drinking experiences. We hope you enjoy this week’s version of What We’re Drinking, and we also hope that you have a moment or two this week to kick back, take a deep breath, and enjoy a malty libation of your own.

A quick calendar check might suggest that now isn’t the ideal time to sip a Señor Pepino Cucumber Lime Lager from Epic Brewing. As days get gobbled up by night and swimsuits give way to sweatshirts, craft beer drinkers tend to move away from beachy summer refreshers.
Of course, another look at the calendar provides proof that this is still 2020. And if there’s one thing the year’s made clear, it’s to expect the unexpected.

Epic Brewing Acquires California’s Telegraph Brewing

Epic Brewing this morning has announced their acquisition of Santa Barbara, CA’s Telegraph Brewing. Telegraph, which opened in 2006 has focused on Belgian inspired beers and grown a thriving sour and wild program. Epic Brewing’s acquisition aims to help grow Telegraph’s overall production, sour program, as well as introduce a 12 oz canned line.

Last year, when Epic Brewing Company announced its plans to release two very special versions of their barrel-aged stout Big Bad Baptist, we stood up and took notice. Released alongside the already well-established original Big Bad Baptist, was the Mexican coffee-inspired Big Bad Baptista and the sensory enticing Double Barrel Big Bad Baptist. Last year flew by, picking off celebrities along the way. Each week we were viciously stripped of a little bliss replaced with dread, fearing who could be next. Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister passed away at the end of 2015, opening the floodgates to a particularly tough 2016. Consequently, if he could go, anyone could. Because of this vulnerability, it drove us to stop and think about the past. We wish there were better reasons to revisit the legends of our youth. When they leave us, we are forced to fire up Netflix or Spotify and immerse ourselves in their undeniable genius.

I remember attending the celebration for Epic Brewing‘s first dive into sours in June 2015, including waxing my own bottle of Sour Brainless on Peaches, free peach ice cream and even fire-roasted peaches. The beer was worth the hype and I was immediately excited to see how this souring program would grow.

From the first sip of a Los Locos, the Mexican-style Lager from Epic Brewing, you know you are in for something special.The all-too-familiar aroma of lime and salt is the first thing you notice. The tart lime flavor is definitely present, but never overwhelming, and the hint of sea salt seems to cut any lingering sweetness that may be present making Los Locos a crisp and refreshing beer. We live in a state known for our curious alcohol laws. Laws we would say have inadvertently given strength to the Utah beer industry. Local breweries have been forced to brew beer at the low-alcohol 4% abv in order to serve on draft or be available in grocery or convenience stores. How can this possibly be a good thing you ask? It means: Utah-based breweries perfected the art of the ‘Session’ beer long before ‘Session’ became a thing for breweries (outside of the Beehive state) who looked for ways to avoid knocking out their consumers with huge alcohol content.
