In my humble opinion, 2022 will go down as one of the best years in film. It was an incredible year for horror, animation, blockbusters, and even dramatic awards contenders! When I saw the nominations for Best Picture announced, I couldn’t even object over any of the films included. That’s why I feel confident in saying this is one of my favorite Ultimate 6ers I’ve ever done in relation to the Academy Awards.
So fire up your streaming services and place the coolers at your feet, cause we’ve got the best beers to pair with all the prestigious winners!
Now that Oktoberfest has ended, what do we do with all the leftover beers? Yes, you could easily drink them but if you’ve grown tired of steins and steins of German beer, then might PorchDrinking offer you a delicious, unique alternative! Presenting the Diesel, a 50/50 mix of Beer and Coca-Cola.
Burgers are the ultimate partner for beer. (Sorry Pizza!) Whether you’re in a fancy restaurant or sitting by the barbecue, nothing hits the spot quite like the charbroiled taste of meat washed down with a refreshing beer. Memorial Day is the perfect excuse to enjoy these simple pleasures in life whether stuck with your family or watching America’s favorite burger-slinging family, The Belchers!
As the world of cinema returned to normalcy, the buzz and attention centered on the Academy Awards remained debatable as ever! Though if there’s one lesson the industry learned from the last few years, it’s that putting the biggest award hopefuls on all the streaming services is the best way to keep the attention of the people! This year’s Academy Awards is a very diverse selection of films with some clear favorites, some unexpected surprises, and schismatic choices depending on which passionate film critic you talk to.
Thankfully at PorchDrinking, we don’t neglect all the choices available. We want to enshrine these films with incredible experiences! So kick back and engage in the visual and brewing arts!
The Doppelbock is a criminally underrated beer style. While many German styles are known for their simplicity, Doppelbocks take the love of grain into overdrive by emphasizing on layers of malty sweetness. Thanks to their alcohol content and variable grain bill, Doppelbocks are allowed to have a bit more expression from the brewery. That’s why Spaten Doppelbock leans more caramel-y whereas Tröegs Troegenator is more savory and fruit-forward. Where Brothers Craft Brewing re-invents the Doppelbock comes from a particular infusion of a very special wood.
The craft beer industry revolves around the concept of collaboration. Not one person can do every single role in a brewery to keep the lights on or the beer flowing. Frequently breweries collaborate with their brewing neighbors, charity organizations, bands or local restaurants, but this Ultimate 6er wanted to go beyond the impossible. Here we name some of the most creative ideas crafted by the industry that’ll make you appreciate what goes into making a true collective fusion!
Every state has a classic craft beer that changed people’s perception of what beer was. From Spotted Cow in Wisconsin to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in California, there’s a dependable representative that can be found everywhere from gas station to supermarket. In Virginia, we’re fortunate enough to drink the incredibly popular Brown Ale by Legend Brewing Co.
There’s far too much content these days to keep up with. The amount of new things to watch is a never-ending, cascading waterfall that’s created an embarrassment of riches. So when you open up the streaming platform, where do you even start? As society is returning normal for some people, we believe that promoting positive, invigorating media is the way to go. May as well pick summer since that’s when Network TV slows down!
For this week’s Ultimate 6er, we’ve catalogued a series of TV shows that reject irony and embrace sincerity in their messaging and craftsmanship. Get ready for the good times!
This recipe comes from Scott Johnson’s recipe book and is a modern twist on the classic pairing of pork chops and applesauce.
Covering the Academy Awards is a PorchDrinking tradition, even when the entire industry is out of order. Several of this year’s nominees were promoted via word of mouth as the influence of the box office and large marketing campaigns were completely minimized. So what we’re left with is a very diverse selection of films over the numerous categories that many people may not have heard of until they were chosen. And fitting to 2020, several of these are incredibly heavy about handling or becoming overwhelmed by adversity.
Judging a beer by its label is a bias we often encounter as craft beer drinkers. If you resist the urge to check a beer’s score inside the bottle shop, then you’re relying on the beer’s look and description to hook you in. You would assume that a humble beer coming from a brewery such as The Virginia Beer Company would be an old standby, reflected in the simplistic art and presentation. But the craftsmanship and modern innovation they put into their Liquid Escape goes far beyond what to expect.
On the cusp of Thanksgiving 2020 after an incredibly stressful year; we all deserve a moment to indulge. Though as you can only fill your stomach so much or tolerate a certain amount of beer; what do you choose? Well, there’s no better option to treat your senses than to enjoy a beer that comes with its own recipe card!
Five Years Ago, Flying Dog Brewery shocked the craft beer world by introducing a trendsetting savory beer. Fitting to its abrasive, coastal brand; the brewery crafted a blonde ale called Dead Rise Ale, infamously infused with Old Bay Seasoning. Flying Dog has decided to let the Dead Rise once again, but this time in the form they had initially intended: a Gose.
If you like to cuddle up with some of your favorite movies to take a break from life’s woes, this is the Ultimate 6er for you! So grab your favorite comfort food dish and treat yourself to an easy day of relaxing. Who knows? You might find some new favorites to treat the senses!
Breweries have taken the initiative to distribute their beer due to the restrictions of COVID-19. In turn, craft beer fans should support as many nearby breweries as possible as they push through uncertain times. Not only are you doing what is right for local businesses but you may discover your new favorite beer from down the block! That’s how I came into contact with Restless Moons Brewing Company Harrisonbürger Pilsner.
It’s always impressive when a brewery breaks away from their most popular beer. For years, O’Connor Brewing Co. was known for its El Guapo, an Agave IPA that you’d find at just about every supermarket and Mexican restaurant. The brewery had some nice beers here and there, but most got overshadowed by El Guapo. O’Connor finally broke through the mold last year when it released Proper Lager, a new flagship Helles-style lager that ranked #4 on Paste’s 102 of the Best Craft Lagers, Blind-Tasted and Ranked.
The 92nd Academy Awards represents some major changes going on in the world of Hollywood. From the first South Korean movie nominated to Best Picture to streaming services fighting against classic studios; we can’t keep our attention away from the prestigious awards ceremony. Yet people always ask the same question every year: Do the Oscars matter in the grand scheme of things?
My answer is always yes. Even if something you don’t like wins, the goal is to expose others to new cinema and respect the work done by so many unsung heroes in the industry. After all, these are values you learn in the craft beer world when trying new styles or finding out how beer is made. So I’ve cobbled together the best six beers to have with the nine Best Picture Nominees.
Although craft beer fans are becoming more keen on pairing beers with their favorite cheeses and meals, I’ve always found that cooking with beer to be a challenge. If you’re not acclimated to the natural bitter flavors of hops and malts, then beer can turn your dish into an overwhelming, unwieldy experience. The upside to this we can now discover new recipes by experimenting with more beer styles. In all my years of cooking, these crowd-pleasing pork rillons may be the perfect vehicle to harness the true flavors of beer.
Compared to every other season, autumn always conjures up particular styles of beer. Pumpkin beers, Märzens, and Ambers match drinkers’ palates like the changing shades of leaves. As the summer winds down during peaks of sweltering humidity, you wouldn’t think there could be a beer over 10% fitting for the season. Thankfully, us Virginians have access to a beer that perfectly represents the twilight of summer with Lickinghole Creek’s Coconut Quad.
The craft beer explosion in unique to everyone depending on location. Once the contracts are signed, state distributors awash the bottle shop shelves with rows of new possibilities. These beers become exciting mysteries; sold as 1 to 2 bottles per customer to get everyone’s attention to the hot new kid on the block. Years will go by, some breweries will go away, but others stay thanks to their long lasting quality. Maine Beer Company fits all these descriptors when it arrived in my state years ago.
