Event Recap | 2016 Chicago Beer Classic

May 9, 2016 |

Those in attendance at Saturday’s 2016 Chicago Beer Classic should have a greater appreciation for Chicago Bears’ kicker Robbie Gould. The swirling winds created some unique challenges for the festival held at Soldier Field. The breweries struggling to keep their signs from falling down and SWAG from blowing all over the field, could only imagine what it’s like to kick a 50-yard field goal in those same conditions.

Breweries had to get creative to make sure their signs didn't blow over in the strong winds.

The collaborative spirit of the craft beer industry has long been one of my favorite topics to cover, so I was ecstatic to learn about the first-ever Washington Beer Collaboration Festival put on by the Washington Beer Commission. The two-day festival featured 25 collaboration beers from 50 different Washington breweries and celebrated the collaborative and creative culture among Washington brewers. I attended the inaugural festival on a sunny Saturday afternoon and sampled about half of these unique brews. Read on for some of my favorite concoctions from this innovative festival.

Event Preview | Science on Tap

May 5, 2016 |

Science is the cornerstone to brewing beer. Although many of our craft beer events are centered around performers or special beer releases, it’s nice to see these gatherings celebrating the study of our favorite beverages. That’s the goal of “Science on Tap,” an outdoor festival for educating beer novices and aficionados alike on beer chemistry. And there’s no better place to have this event than at the heart of Virginia’s largest craft beer community, our capital Richmond. Read More

Event Preview | Odell Resurrects Small Batch Festival

April 14, 2016 |

Odell Brewing Company last hosted Small Batch Festival in 2012, and while the event was an amazing success, the brewery has been quite busy in the years since — They expanded their footprint (Iowa and Texas,) updated their seasonal lineup (Brombeere here, Double Pilsner gone,) released a handful of new bombers (such as Brazzle and Pina Agria,) created a seasonal variety pack (Montage,) and completed brewery construction. Having accomplished so much the past few years, Odell is ready to bring back the Small Batch Festival and hopes to make it an annual event. Adam D’Antonio from Odell said “production comes first and festivals second. We didn’t want to bring Small Batch back until we were ready and could do it right.” Read More
