2014 Mountain Sun Stout Month Lineup

If there’s one positive to come from the nation’s recent exposure to polar vortexes and schizophrenic weather shifts, it’s that as a society, we can all truly rally behind the rich, roast-y, sometime chocolate-y, stouts to warm our chilly bones. If you can’t already tell, I’m not the biggest fan of winter. However, winter’s one saving grace always coincides with the beginning of February in the form of Mountain Sun Brewing’s Stout Month. Last year we detailed a bit of history behind this time honored month long celebration of all beers of the stout variety in the state of Colorado. And this year we’re back with the full 2014 Mountain Sun Stout Month Lineup.

Jungle Jim’s – Barrel Aged Beer Bash

People were staying warm last Friday night at the Barrel Aged Beer Bash hosted by Jungle Jim’s International Market. Located in Fairfield, OH, Jungle Jim’s has built the largest international market from the ground up. Starting as small fruit stand, Jim Boniminio pursued a dream that led him to building a 300,000 sq. ft. plus international food paradise. As a major tourist destination there is never a shortage of exotic fruits and vegetables or rare beers and fine wines to keep you busy as you spend a day traveling throughout the store. By hosting a barrel aged beer festival, the Jungle was able to bring in all the good stuff.

A few years ago, in the French region of Brittany, I had a beer that took me by surprise: the label said it was brewed with sea salt. I hadn’t yet heard of gøse and the beer had a salinity and fullness that was new to me. I forgot the name and spent several years trying to track down salty beer. BeerStreetJournal recently reported the upcoming opening of YOLO Brewing Company slated for a spring launch Sacramento, CA. Based on all accounts from the brewery’s Facebook page (it’s only appropriate to cite a brewery’s social media page if it’s inspired by a hashtag), this is a real brewery that is inspired by the social media movement. Crux Fermentation Project- Impasse Saison

Crux Fermentation Project in Bend, OR claims that for this beer they were “at an impasse”—use standard fermentation techniques to have a more controlled beer and greater yield, or use the traditional Belgian style of open fermentation to produce a more unique flavor profile. In an ode to the ages-old Belgian saison style, they threw caution to the wind and went with the latter. And as the consumer, we should be glad they did!

I distinctly remembered leaving last year’s Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines Festival feeling like I had done something illegal, as if I had snuck into first class mid-flight, or was mistaken for a movie star and gotten into a private party. See when I left VBBB last year I had just encountered one of the greatest collections of rare/phenomenal beers assembled in one place.

The new year is upon us, and January can easily become a bothersome month with the lingering remnants of an unsatisfying winter. What that means for this writer is that too often does the cold weather eschew the cherished snowday reprieve but rather dampen spirits with slush, cold temps and ice. With planning consuming the month, it is not hard to lose track of what this month has to offer, except of course, when receiving a special delivery from Hershey.

This is going to be a bit confusing to those of you who are not familiar with my apartment, ok, well, that makes all of you – but I can smell this beer from my kitchen. I opened it, poured it, and ran to the kitchen to grab a snack. It’s a long way from my office to my kitchen, at least 40 feet. And there are walls…like a bunch of walls, at least 2, maybe more (counting becomes difficult somewhere between the 1st and 2nd Molotov).

A company started by two brothers. They didn’t start it due to a lack of good beer. They wanted to do something that was “awesome.” Awesome is what they are doing. Prairie Bomb! is ridiculous.
