Russian River Brewing Company | Consecration

September 3, 2015 |

ABV 10%

Russian River Brewing Company is not only regarded as one of the best breweries in California, but also in the country. The other day I had the great pleasure of visiting their brew pub and the first thing I noticed was the phenomenal selection of beers to choose from. They have everything from sessions to pilsners to stouts to porters and their famous IPA’s and wilds/sours. The demand for all the Russian River Brewing Company beers is high due to their philosophy that it is easier to make better beer than it is to make more beer! I have not had a beer aged in wine-barrels I have enjoyed as much as Consecration. Read More

Reasons to Attend Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines Fest

September 2, 2015 | 1

Admittedly, it might be a tad early to think about buying tickets to a beer festival in January, but not when it’s the Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines Festival. I’ve already waxed poetic a number of times on VBBB’s level of awesome.

I’ve also stated before, and I still maintain that this is the best beer festival I have ever attended. In the past, it has also generally been the best kept secret in the beer festival scene, but I have a feeling that title won’t endure much longer (my bad). Luckily for you readers, we’re excited to announce that tickets for the 2016 Vail Big Beers Belgians and Barleywines Fest are on sale NOW. The festival takes place during the afternoon of Saturday, January 10th.

Ultimate 6er | Good Brew to All That : New York City Beers

September 2, 2015 |

Joan Didion wrote “Goodbye to All That” about falling in and out of love with New York after leaving the city. Like most of the works considered essential cannon of literature, I haven’t read it (blame the Strand, suckers will NOT reduce the price of her books one dollar). It’s in fact such essential reading for the New York transplant that it’s spawned its own cottage industry of “leaving New York” personal essays.

I recently (as in like last week) moved back to Detroit after six years in New York. I’m happy to be out of all the craziness and expense of the city, but know that I’ll be missing so much that only New York can offer. With all that wonders of the city no longer mine for the taking, I’d thought I’d share the 6 New York City beers that I’m going to miss the most.

The recent proliferation of neighborhood breweries has on the whole been positive. It’s these neighborhood breweries that have help fuel the recent boon in beer consumption, exposing blue collar Americans to a wide array of exciting new styles and flavors. According to the Brewers’ Association, craft beer market share grew from 9.44 to 11.05 last year and small neighborhood breweries make up a decent percentage of that.

However, one alarmingly negative trend that continues to plague these micro and nanobreweries, is a lack of focus on the quality of beer being produced, as well as the decision to open up shop before they’re actually ready. Over the past year, a growing number of these operations have opened their doors only to run out of beer within a matter of days, and in some cases within a matter of hours. Even worse is the practice of flat out serving beer that isn’t ready to be served.

Luckily, Station 26 Brewing Company wasn’t one of those breweries. In fact, from the moment it opened its doors, it began renewing our faith in these neighborhood brewing operations. Why? Because they’ve done it the right way.

Station 26 Brewing Co. is one of those breweries that definitely stands out in your mind, not only because they have great beers but because their location is rather unique. Located in a former Denver Firehouse, Station 26 owns their surroundings, turning the historical building into a modern and inviting tap room even down to the red firehoses that form the lining for wall behind their bar. Their south facing patio also connects directly with a set of sliding garage doors giving the interior the feel of, well a communal porch.
