Almanac Brewing Company | Golden Gate Gose
November 10, 2014 | Kara Loo and Kelissa HieberOur first taste of Almanac beer occurred this year at Great American Beer Fest when we were conveniently pouring samples across from their booth. We were immediately intrigued when we realized that they featured several dynamically flavored sours and featured one of our favorite slogans: “Farm to Barrel.” Read More

Pear and Rum Beer Delight
November 7, 2014 | Natalie Migliarini
November is the perfect time to start thinking about fun and festive holiday cocktails. Today I am sharing a seasonal inspired recipe that uses fresh pears and a pear beer. This beer cocktail represents fall and winter flavors including pears, cloves and vanilla. I used spiced rum to spice it up a little more but it does not overpower the delicate pear flavor. Read More

Reuben’s Brews | Imperial Oatmeal Stout
November 6, 2014 | Katelyn PelakABV: 8.4%
IBU: 39
I first met the team at Reuben’s Brews in early 2013 at their brewery in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. At that time, they had already finished brewing their 50th batch of beer and they had been open for about six months. This is an impressive and important feature of Reuben’s Brews, as well as a very good reason to find their beer next time you’re in the Seattle area. Brewmaster Adam Robbings prioritizes giving his customers as many options as possible on the brewery’s twelve taps and brews in smaller batches in order to keep the recipes true to form. The emphasis on taste and the drinker’s experience has resulted in a plethora of awards and recognition for the family-owned brewery, including 15 medals at the World Beer Championships since opening in August 2012. Good People Brewing | Alabama’s O.G. of Craft Beer
November 5, 2014 | Becky Kellogg 3
Nestled in the heart of downtown Birmingham, just steps away from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and across the street from the city’s minor league ball park, is Good People Brewing. Good People is the O.G. of craft beer in Alabama. This, despite being only 7 years old.
“We sold our first keg July 4, 2008, after Free the Hops was able to get the Gourmet Beer Bill passed. That raised the ABV limit from 5.9 to 13.9%,” said Good People Brewing’s marketing specialist Lauren McCurdy. “Miller High Life is 5.5%, so automatically the old laws put Miller High Life on the high end of the spectrum.”

Entrepreneur Paul Leamon liked to hold business meetings during the week at a bar where he and his business associates could have a beer while they worked. The only problem was that early on a weekday the bar atmosphere wasn’t the best. This, coupled with his passion for craft beer, led him to open Beermiscuous Café.

Schlafly | Coffee Stout
November 4, 2014 | Niel Stender 2ABV: 5.7%
IBU: 30
I look forward to a steaming mug of black coffee in the morning almost as much I do a cold beer on a Friday night. And let’s be honest, stout combined with coffee is the peanut butter and chocolate of the beer world. So, Schlafly Coffee Stout, which combines two of my favorite beverages into 12 ounces of liquid delight was a no brainer. I also appreciate that Schlafly collaborates with a local coffee roaster, Kaldi’s, to produce this brew. Read More
Wine for Beer Lovers | Fall Edition
November 3, 2014 | Stacey GoersPorchDrinking.com gave you the right wine for your summer brews back in June. Now that the leaves are changing and the beers are darkening, we give you the best wine choices based on what beers you love.
Pairings are thanks to Michelle Lim Warner, the co-owner of DCanter, a wine and beer shop on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
Evil Twin Brewing | Hipster Ale
November 3, 2014 | Danny KingABV: 5.5%
IBU: 45 (it took me forever to find this and and the site had no proof so… Grain of salt with this one)
While I first knew Evil Twin Brewery was amazing after my first Ashtray Heart, The New York Times’ article on the major rift between its founder Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergso and his twin brother Mikkel Borg Bjerso of Mikkeller Brewery is what solidified my love of this gypsy brewery. Throughout the article, Evil Twin comes off as a loveable troll – exposing the ridiculousness that occurs when cool festers to snobbery and the quest for prestige makes you forget that in the end, this is an industry making tasty drinks for customers to enjoy and get buzzed from. It’s what inspired me to start ordering beers and buying six-packs blindly in order to expand my horizons. In my opinion at the very least, Evil Twin is the hero craft brewing deserves AND the one it needs right now. It’s got the brains and the heart. Which brings me to Hipster Ale.
