Depending on how you look it at, summer is just about halfway over. If that isn’t cause for a beer or two, then I don’t know what is. But while we still have another half to go, let’s send it off in style and have some great beers. Here’s what we’re drinking this week.
I’m totally stoked for Memorial Day weekend. I don’t have to work, which in itself is a rarity, and I also used two vacation days to finagle an entire week off. But let’s not forget the reason that we don’t have to work on Monday. Use every sip of beer as an opportunity to toast those who have fallen in service to our country. They paid the ultimate price so that I could post some nonsense I found on Twitter. This is The Weekly Buzz.
I had planned on writing something political this week. The urge to create a good old-fashioned doom-and-gloom post was almost undeniable, but it turns out that I don’t have the energy. There is simply no fuel left in my tank. We had a snowstorm on the second day of spring, which led to a lot of unwelcome shoveling. I had to replace the battery in my fiancee’s car (in the midst of the heaped-up snow). It’s just been one of those weeks. Here’s some stuff from Twitter and Instagram. I barely drank any beer this week. The disappointment is very real. What compounds these feelings of regret is that I had to search for fun beer things on Twitter and Instagram all week. Foxboro, Mass. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy, and the New England Patriots are no exception to this. Our heroes, the Philadelphia Eagles, are about to meet these cheaters on the gridiron and bring the Lombardi Trophy home to the City of Brotherly Love. I know you’re all rooting for the right team. It’s high time that we discuss something very important. That thing is the NFC Conference Championship. The result was exactly as I thought it would be — a thorough shellacking of the Minnesota Viking by a vastly superior football team. Nick Foles led the Eagles to victory and will do so again in the Super Bowl. Philly loves to be the underdog, so keep underestimating them, Tom Brady! Oh… and I found some beer things on Twitter, too. This is the Weekly Buzz.
I just realized today that I’ve gone to the gym 11 days in a row and plan on going twice tomorrow. What kind of human being does that to themselves? I could be drinking beer, but instead I’ll be sweating my butt off. I guess if I burn more calories I can drink more beer. Well, it’s officially 2018. I don’t feel much different than I did last year. I already go to the gym on a regular basis, so I don’t have a pesky weight loss resolution to deal with (although I do have plenty left to lose). The world is still a terrifying hellscape, and we’re all used to that by now. We still have craft beer, so that’s a mark in the “Win” column. This week was a bummer in a lot of ways. Houston is still reeling from Harvey, Florida got beat up by Irma and we remembered the anniversary of a devastating terrorist attack. You know what, though? We got through it. We’ll continue to get through it. Even though at times it may seem like we are kicking ourselves in the ass, we’ll find a way to make it right. We have one devastating hurricane behind us and another on the way. This September is turning out to be brutal for a lot of people. This was a crazy week in craft beer! It all started with International Beer Day on Friday. The week hit a critical mass of insanity when Funky Buddha (R.I.P.) was purchased by Constellation Brands and Magnolia Brewing was acquired by New Belgium (and partners). Also, let us not forget that I personally drank upwards of 12 beers. Slipping between the cracks of the more earth-shattering developments were plenty of event announcements, a few brewery anniversaries and a handful of job openings. The demand for juicy, Northeast-style IPAs has skyrocketed seemingly overnight. I am always looking to get my hands on these late-hopped brews whenever I see them on draft at a local watering hole. But you also have the traditional West Coast style beers, such as Pliny the Elder. And then, off the banks of the Delaware River, north of Philadelphia in the suburbs of Bucks County, lies a brewery making a DIPA rivaling those true to the West Coast style that’s also infused with characteristics of a Northeast IPA that everyone is loving these days — The Shape of Hops to Come.
