Prairie Artisan Ales – Bomb!
January 9, 2014 | Cory PelcPrairie Artisan Ales – Bomb! (Batch 3 – Blue Wax)
ABV: 14%
A company started by two brothers. They didn’t start it due to a lack of good beer. They wanted to do something that was “awesome.” Awesome is what they are doing. Prairie Bomb! is ridiculous. A venture from their customary Saison-fare in the best direction! Prairie Artisan Ales is becoming that brewery that when I try a new beer from them, I am never disappointed. This is an AWESOME thing. How awesome? This beer is like the Black Swan in my mouth. This beer is like two dragons eating rapscallions on a burning pirate ship. This beer is . . .
Homebrewing Gingerbread Stout
December 19, 2013 | Philip Joyce 2After a few beers I gained the cojones to start an email string suggesting the PorchDrinking team start homebrewing together. I’m humble about a lot of things I do, but dammit, I make damn good beer. All of my best friends can attest to that… or maybe I just have really nice friends. Either way, I decided to invite the team to my house to brew on my MacGyver’d homebrew setup and this is how we got started Homebrewing Gingerbread Stout.
12 Beers of Christmas | Day 6- Port Brewing Bourbon Barrel Aged Santa’s Little Helper
December 19, 2013 | Will DozierStyle: Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout
ABV: 10.0%
Background: We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and beer. Well not exactly the words of Buddy the elf but, he would definitely like Port Brewing’s 2011 Bourbon Barrel Aged Santa’s Little Helper. The barrel aged version has spent an extra 9 months in bourbon barrels and this particular bottle has spent just a little bit over a year in the cellar allowing the flavors to meld into the perfect helper to get you through the holidays. Yeti- Imperial Stout (Perennial)

With Halloween recently ended, I thought it was prevalent to include a costume idea for next year. Whether is be a fictional superhero, our favorite movie character, or the most elusive monster in American culture, our ambitions know no bounds. Moreover, who wouldn’t want to spot a seven-foot Sasquatch walking around. Read More

The lockout has ended and hockey is back in season. This my friends, calls for a beer. Sports and beer have always had an interesting marriage, consummated in parking lots, club boxes and sometimes divorced in bathrooms and pavements. Every game day has its own traditions, and for weekday games at Broad and Pattison, the equation always includes a trip to the Perch Pub (Broad and Locust Streets, Center City Philadelphia).

Founders Brewing | Breakfast Stout
August 14, 2013 | Cory PelcABV: 8.3% | IBU: 60
I used to think this brew was best poured into a wide base tulip on a cool summer’s evening. I have changed my mind. This breakfast beer is best served with breakfast. It’s a big beer but not too big. Grab a mug, pour a Founders Brewing Breakfast Stout and grab a slice of coffee cake. Take a seat on your front/back porch with the morning paper. It’s time for breakfast the way it was intended.

Of course, I had to review my favorite style first. Bring on the Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout!

Fat Head’s Oompa Loompa Chocolate Cream Stout
May 20, 2013 | Ian ConnorsABV: 6.5% | IBU: 33
Stout brewed with dark chocolate and vanilla beans added.
Fat Head’s story began in Pittsburgh, PA, circa 1992, with the founding of Fat Head’s Saloon. In 2009 Fat Head’s expanded to North Olmsted, Ohio, teaming up with Matt Cole (an award winning brewer) to open Fat Head’s Brewery & Saloon. Success came quickly, with the brewery producing over 5000 barrels over its first three years and Fat Head’s beers winning many awards. They expanded to a full-scale producing brewery in 2012, located in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.
Stone Espresso Imperial Russian Stout 2013 Odd Year Release
April 26, 2013 | Erin PetreyOld Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
April 25, 2013 | Cory Pelc 1North Coast Brewing – Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
ABV: 9%
IBU: 75
I consider this to be THE Russian Imperial Stout. The Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout brand image is a drawing of Rasputin, the infamous Mad Monk, with a phrase in Russian encircling it – A sincere friend is not born instantly. I beg to differ with this sentiment as I found a quick liquid ‘friend’ in this dark, dry stout from just a few gulps. I’m telling you, on these Colorado cold evenings, this brew can hypnotize you with its healing powers of warmth. Much like Rasputin and his mysteries of healing magic, many are unsure how this ale makes you feel different after just a few pulls, but it really does evoke a sense of liquid sorcery in every sip.
Ultimate 6er | Beer + Beer = Mixed Beer!
April 10, 2013 | Justin HatfieldHave you ever found yourself agonizing over choosing between two beers? In some cases, the best solution is do get both and mix them. Perhaps you have heard of a Black and Tan ( Stout & Pale Ale), a Snake Bite (Stout or Lager with Hard Cider), or a Black and Blue (Stout & Wheat (Blue Moon)). Most people associate these mixed beer drinks with Guinness + ____ , but there are some other great mixed beer variations out there. I propose to you this ultimate mixed beer 6er! Read More
Oskar Blues Brewery – Ten Fidy Imperial Stout
February 25, 2013 | Kathleen Morton 1A spontaneous road trip from Denver to Estes Park may turn into a random brewery trip if you’re lucky. More than 15 breweries sit between the two and it’s always a good idea to take advantage of that. On Saturday, I stopped at Oskar Blues Brewery in Longmont. The colder weather out here in Colorado has opened up a lot of stout options over the last month. Hearing that Oskar Blue’s had one called Ten Fidy Imperial Stout left me intrigued. Read More
Mountain Sun Brewing’s Stout Month
January 30, 2013 | Tristan Chan 2Mountain Sun Brewing’s Stout Month is coming. And as the immortal Samuel L. Jackson once said, “Hold on to your butts.” Every year, amidst the cold bitter winter months shines a beacon of hope and happiness. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Stout Month for the Mountain Sun family and it promises to be bigger, bolder and more stout than ever (see what I did there?)
Rogue Ales – Double Chocolate Stout
December 27, 2012 | Justin Hatfield ABV 8.7% IBU 50 AA 77 Lovibond 135º Plato 22ºRogue has always been one of my favorite breweries. Most people know them for their Dead Guy Ale, which in all rights is an amazing beer. However, their Double Chocolate Stout has now become my favorite Rogue brew and perhaps one of my favorite stouts. While it is available on draft, I have yet to see it in Colorado. It is also available in a bomber – it is one you can’t miss being in a bright fire engine red bottle.Turns out I am not the only one who loves this beer as it won a gold medal at the 2010 world beer championships.
Homebrewing Gingerbread Stout: Part 2
December 18, 2012 | Philip Joyce 2The brilliant thing about homebrewing is that as long as you have excellent sanitation practices, there’s no reason you can’t tweak a recipe once you’ve already brewed it and begun fermentation. With the exception of beer flaws, lots of changes can take place in beers post fermentation. One perfect example is dry-hopping beers. When our Gingerbread stout wasn’t quite up to snuff, we upped the ante.
Equinox Brewing – Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Stout
December 7, 2012 | Andy Manshel 6ABV: 5.5%
IBU: 28
I don’t know about you, but I like delicious things. I also like beer. So, when I heard that Equinox Brewing was taking their already tasty Mr. Delicious Oatmeal Stout and turning it into a limited edition 10 gallon batch to create a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Stout, I freaked, and for good reason. I made it down to the brewery just in time (by the time I finished my one and only pint, it was gone).
New Belgium Brewing- Imperial Coffee Chocolate Stout
December 4, 2012 | Tristan ChanLost in the shuffle in the more recent trends of sours, black IPAs, saisons, and old world recipes has been the foregone marriage of chocolate and coffee. Sure a few classic coffee beers are still hanging around shelves, or pop up infrequently from start up microbreweries, such as Renegade’s Sunday Morning. But it seems like those coffee flavored brews have lost some of the hype. New Belgium’s Imperial Coffee Stout definitely restores that swag.
Cigar City Brewing Company- Marshal Zhukov
October 24, 2012 | Tristan ChanABV: 9%
Cigar City Brewing serves up several brews that have garnered a cult follow, partially because they’re only available in Florida, partially because they are one of the only solid breweries at the moment to come out of Florida and mostly because they make fantastic, cult following worthy beers. One of those pedestal level rarities is Marshal Zhukov.
