Spring is here, but you would never know it by the various storms popping up in the news lately! The East Coast is covered in snow, and today in the Bay Area I drove through tough winds. I for one am looking forward to clear skies and higher temperatures so I can enjoy more time outside and not feel like I will be blown away. It’s high time that we discuss something very important. That thing is the NFC Conference Championship. The result was exactly as I thought it would be — a thorough shellacking of the Minnesota Viking by a vastly superior football team. Nick Foles led the Eagles to victory and will do so again in the Super Bowl. Philly loves to be the underdog, so keep underestimating them, Tom Brady! Oh… and I found some beer things on Twitter, too. This is the Weekly Buzz.
This week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz is going to be a little shorter than usual. It’s November, and cold weather has finally arrived, but I refuse to admit it and fire up the furnace. It is a brisk 54 degrees in my living room, and I will soon be departing to enjoy some free heat at my local gym. I might even work out, too! Things of late have been eventful for me, dear readers. A new home, a newborn nephew, and now my first foray into SweetWater Brewing Co.’s The Woodlands Project. The Woodlands opened its doors around this time last year (October 2016) and ever since has served as HQ for SweetWater’s barrel-aging program where they produce small-batch “funky, sour, or otherwise awesome beers.”
This week was a bummer in a lot of ways. Houston is still reeling from Harvey, Florida got beat up by Irma and we remembered the anniversary of a devastating terrorist attack. You know what, though? We got through it. We’ll continue to get through it. Even though at times it may seem like we are kicking ourselves in the ass, we’ll find a way to make it right. Until that day, we will have America’s greatest coping mechanism at our disposal–beer. Crack open a fresh one, and get ready for The Weekly Buzz.
This week was terrible in so many ways, almost all of which were related to a bastard named Harvey. It’s disasters like these that help renew my faith in people. There are military men and women, police and other emergency …
Did any of you know that parents of a kindergartner must endure no less than four events at the school? Four. That is all before school starts. There are meet-and-greets with teachers, self-guided tours and practice school bus rides. The real kicker is that none of these events serves beer. I’m running for PTA to undo this travesty. This was a crazy week in craft beer! It all started with International Beer Day on Friday. The week hit a critical mass of insanity when Funky Buddha (R.I.P.) was purchased by Constellation Brands and Magnolia Brewing was acquired by New Belgium (and partners). Also, let us not forget that I personally drank upwards of 12 beers. Slipping between the cracks of the more earth-shattering developments were plenty of event announcements, a few brewery anniversaries and a handful of job openings. It’s been another long, hot week. Not only that, but it was a busy week in the world of craft beer. GABF tickets went on sale, we celebrated National IPA Day and one of this country’s oldest craft breweries was bought by Sapporo. As the weekend creeps towards us, we all need to sit back, take a deep breath and enjoy a delicious beer. While you do that, feel free to peruse this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz.

I’m jealous of every PorchDrinker this week. I have been working too much to enjoy any fine craft brews. Luckily, I get to live vicariously through each and every one of them. Don’t worry about me, fair readers. My liver shall be vindicated next week. I’ll be vacationing in Myrtle Beach and will have nothing to do except imbibe. Does anyone have bail money to lend me in advance? This is What We’re Drinking!
It’s definitely springtime now! Do you know what that means?! It means doing some ACTUAL drinking on ACTUAL porches! I’m sorry if I seem overexcited, but this is what every PorchDrinker lives for. We’re going to drink at ballparks. We’ll be drinking on patios. There might even be some picnic drinking! Take your laptop out to the porch, crack open a beer, and take some notes. We’re about to put on a serious PorchDrinking demonstration in this week’s edition of What We’re Drinking.
Ugh. I just realized that I have to mow my lawn today. It is out of control. On the bright side, I get to enjoy a lawnmower beer (or 5). I suggest that you do not follow in my footsteps. Yard work is bull crap. Instead, you should sit on your porch, crack open a fresh beer and hope someone else mows it for you. You can even read this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz. Reading tweets about beer is WAY more fun than pushing a lawnmower. If you follow this advice, you’ll be much happier (until your municipality fines you for the length of your grass).
Valentine’s Day fell this week, and I have reaffirmed my love for beer. It is the sun to my moon and the surf to my turf. I mean my kids and lady are great, too, but have you tried beer? They should write a romantic comedy about me and beer. It would be a smash hit. Any Hollywood producers want to get that green-lit for me? Well, anyway, I was on Twitter this week, and this is The Weekly Buzz.
This week was full of ups and downs. Super Bowl 51 saw a huge upset by the Patriots who achieved a comeback over the Falcons (some celebrated, many did not.) Lady Gaga put on a kickass halftime show, but left her political side at home (or did she?) Beyonce broke the internet with her pregnancy announcement (the queen is having twins!) And the American public continues to flail about as the political atmosphere remains heavy and foreboding.
This was a pretty fun week for social media. Not only did the Super Bowl provide endless, hilarious supply of brewery-on-brewery trolling, but there was lots of other fun stuff, too. There were breweries checking in from beer festivals, new beers, distribution announcements, job listings, and more. Don’t worry. We caught all the shenanigans and distilled it down for easy consumption. This is The Weekly Buzz.
How hard is it to assemble a top-notch recap of the week’s social media activity with three kids in the house? It’s very hard, but I NAILED it! This week we have a few events, some new beer, a few political statements and plenty of fun stuff, too. A buffet of beer news and shenanigans is laid out before you, and that can only mean one thing. The NFL conference championships have been decided, and the Pro Bowl is this weekend. Does anyone watch the Pro Bowl? Anyone? Since none of you watch it, this will be a great weekend to head out and discover some new craft beers. When you find them, definitely mail them to me. I want all of them.
