2 Days, 2 Nights in Seattle’s Craft Beer Scene

February 11, 2016 |

This post was written by Hannah Carlson and Katelyn Pelak of the PorchDrinking Seattle team

Seattle, one of the fastest growing US cities, is a mixture of business, wilderness, food, music, coffee, and – of course – beer. Its tenants include everyone from your pink-haired neighbor that works at a boutique featuring solely local arts and crafts, to the posh fashionista that is able to strut her stuff at Nordstrom corporate, to the plaid-donning Amazonian, who types code all week with the goal of treating himself to a trip into the mountains come the weekend. There is something here for everyone, which is why so many people, cut from so many cloths, have found their way to the Emerald City. Seattle, at its core, is an explosion of culture, curiosity and adventure that has encouraged locals to continue sink their roots in deeper. It’s also encouraged transplants to plant new ones. Behind the Scenes at Rocky Mountain Barrel Company

October 26, 2015 |

Innovation and experimentation is the name of the craft beer game. The best craft breweries are always looking for ways to make great beers that showcase incredible flavors and unique characteristics. One of the more popular ways to experiment has been with barrel-aged beers. But have you ever wondered where all those barrels come from? We did, so we recently paid a visit to Rocky Mountain Barrel Company, where Sales Manager & Chief Barrel Slinger, Noah Steingraeber, told us all about the barrel business and how they help breweries to create great barrel-aged beer.  Read More

3 Floyds Brewing Co. | Zombie Dust (Zombie Edition)

October 21, 2015 |

Style: Pale Ale | ABV: 6.2% | IBUs: 50

Halloween is right around the corner and it is one of my all time favorite yearly celebrations. I love scary/horror movies and the month of October is just filled with them, but my all-time favorite horror movie genre is ZOMBIES! Living in Western Pennsylvania you can’t help but be a zombie fan, because the genius behind the genre, George A. Romero, attended college here and also filmed his his first zombie flick, Night of the Living Dead right here in Western Pennsylvania. Ever since then, zombies have been a huge hit in pop culture: movies, television series, clothing, sport events and beer. So what better way to bring in the zombie hoard than with 3 Floyds Brewing Zombie Dust?

Summer of Growth for Georgia’s Wild Heaven Craft Beers

July 13, 2015 |

In a warehouse about a mile east of the hubbub of historic downtown Decatur, Georgia in the Avondale district, a line snakes out of the front door of Wild Heaven Craft Beers on a steamy July Saturday.

The 95 degree heat index doesn’t seem to bother anyone. Neither does the occasional screech of the Marta light rail or the chug of the railroad nearby. You’re more likely to hear the ‘thump-thump’ of bags hitting the boards from the game of cornhole in the beer garden. Read More

Lazy Magnolia Brewery | Sweet Potato Cream Stout (Jefferson Stout)

February 20, 2015 |

ABV: 4.65% ABV | IBU: 22

Before Kentucky is scheduled to be buried under a foot of snow this week, I watched perplexed as Lexatonians prepare for Snowmageddon by stocking up on a month’s worth of Digiornos and Doritos while congesting every aisle of the grocery store. Rather than loading my cart with six gallons of milk and the last of the bread that just might last me 48 hours, I look for a comforting beverage with a flavor that resonates with the coziness of this bitter season. My eyes fell upon the words “Sweet Potato Cream Stout” and I knew I could ride out any storm with this belly-warming brew.

Who’s got the biggest… cans of them all? In walks Wynkoop’s Barrel Aged Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout in 19.2oz cans. Sure their can itself may not be the” largest” format craft can, but its “contents” may just be the most coveted this side of the Vanilla Rye-filled Mississippi.

Smooth, creamy mouthfeel with notes of wood and vanilla and… wait, what am I drinking? What is a Rocky Mountain Oyster? Hold on, what? Calf fries, swinging steaks, prairie oysters, cowboy caviar, criadillas in Mexico, Montana tendergroins, dusted nuts, bull fries or swinging beef? You’re kidding, right?!
