It’s no longer fashionable to rip on pumpkin beers, cozy-sweater-cocoa zombies or Nickelback. It’s been done. It’s worn out. Pumpkin spice is far too ubiquitous to fight any longer. The war’s been fought and to the victor go the gourd-flavored spoils. We’ve lost.
As hot girl summer slowly morphs into beer belly autumn, there are few activities more confusing to the aliens documenting our earthling lives than leaf-peeping.
In an increasingly crowded market, a number of breweries have turned to cocktail beers to help keep their product line fresh and hopefully convert new customers to craft beer. The rise of cocktail beer is a trend that is popping up across the country. The newest entrant into the cocktail-flavored brew market is Dry Dock Brewing in Aurora, CO, which introduces its Docktails line on March 1.
Breweries like to go big on their anniversary. Usually a party, special tappings, food trucks, and sometimes, a special beer. Ska Brewing in Durango, Colorado celebrates their anniversary with live ska bands and around 25 guest breweries pouring shaker glasses full of beer for thirsty partygoers. With COVID in full swing last September, the team made the tough decision to cancel the party. This year, they went big… really big. (And I’m not just talking about the Mighty Mighty Bosstones headlining the sold-out party.)
With the deadline for this article looming and no fresh beer in the fridge, it seemed to be a good chance to round up some of the forgotten-about beers lying around the house and give them a new chance at life. We all have them: beers we got as gifts that aren’t our usual style; leftovers from a party ca. 2019; a few dusties that got buried in the garage fridge; treasures that grew legs and hid themselves out of sight.
Wherever they come from, and for whatever reasons they remain shelved, it’s time to give some love to the forgotten fridge beers as we clear out some space for summer sippin’.
Ska Brewing in Durango, Colorado is generally good for a clever reference or two in their beer names, whether it’s a musical one like Rue B. Soho or a general play on words like summertime favorite Mexican Logger. Not all names have to be clever, however, and not all brews have to be overthought. This year, the brewery adds a second beer to the Hazy IPA category with the plainly named “The” Tropical Hazy IPA.

It’s been another grueling week, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. That light, of course, is the glowing neon of your local watering hole. Just as your favorite bartender is ready to listen to your woes, The Weekly Buzz is hear to brighten your day. It seems like I’m the only PorchDrinker who didn’t have an amazing week of craft beer enjoyment. Instead, I had to work lots of overtime because my coworkers were all pretending to be snowed-in in the aftermath of winter storm Stella. I’ve also managed to get sick again. It feels like my esophagus is being shredded with razor blades every time I swallow. This week I’m on the outside looking in as I bring you What We’re Drinking.
I didn’t have President’s Day off from work, but I hope that all of you had a free day to taste new beers. Being on a diet means that my beer tastings are limited, so I’m counting on all of you to tweet your experiences at me. I’m serious! Valentine’s Day fell this week, and I have reaffirmed my love for beer. It is the sun to my moon and the surf to my turf. I mean my kids and lady are great, too, but have you tried beer? They should write a romantic comedy about me and beer. It would be a smash hit. Any Hollywood producers want to get that green-lit for me? Well, anyway, I was on Twitter this week, and this is The Weekly Buzz.
As I write this, I am faced with the impending doom of a meal with my in-laws. I have been drinking since 7:30AM, and I hope that my intoxication doesn’t bleed through and ruin the high level of quality that you’ve all come to expect from my writing. You’ll be reading this on Black Friday, so go hide in a closet and wait for the mini-apocalypse to reach its natural conclusion. Submitted for your approval, this is The Weekly Buzz. First and foremost, this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz contains a big “Thank You” to all the veterans who have served this country. No matter what political affiliation you may hold, these people deserve our respect. Remember: It’s fine to disagree with your country’s motives for war or military action, but we, as citizens, must always continue to support the brave women and men who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. When I turned 21, I spent the night drinking way too much blue-ribbon winning beer while slightly intoxicated coeds did their best Carrie Underwood karaoke. It was just about as much of a mess as it sounds. This year, Ska Brewing turned 21, and they decided to celebrate with some gold-medal winning beer and some legendary punk and ska bands. It was just about as amazing as it sounds.
