Kentucky Derby Beer Cocktail

Confession: The first time I went to a horse race I never saw a horse. I was there for the party and was hanging out in bluegrass fields mixing cocktails. Which brings me to the event of the year happening this weekend, The Kentucky Derby.

Bourbon will be flowing, southern food will be frying and seersucker will be dancing. The royal cocktail of the weekend is the mint julep, which is laced with bourbon, mint, and simple syrup (water and sugar). What could be better than this southern tradition you ask? Adding craft beer to the mix.

Terrapin Beer Company hosts two big festivals every year. Their Anniversary Carnival is held in April and the Hop Harvest Festival in October. Their latest Anniversary Carnival was April 11th and celebrated 13 years of great Terrapin beer. The carnival commemorates the premiere first public offering of Terrapin Beer Co.’s first brew, Rye Pale ale in April of 2002 at the Classic City Brew Fest. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods. And after living here for any extended period of time, that phrase becomes so common and clichéd that it loses its meaning and incites a collective eye roll from any Chicagoan who hears it (as I’m sure any Chicagoan reading this has already audibly groaned at another utterance). BrüFrou [broo-froo] is the craft beer and food pairing event for foodies who appreciate the nuances of tastes, scents and textures…but there’s more to BrüFrou than meets the eye…and the tastebuds.

WE all know that beer pairs with food better than wine. So do the folks that ushered in this culinary pairing and craft beer event. The inspiration for BrüFrou is Colorado’s vibrant local roster of community beer and food events, revealing an inflection point on the scene. Craft beer has moved main-stage, no longer a sidelined curiosity. Building upon the localized celebrations, on April 25th, from 11 AM to 8 PM, BrüFrou did just that: elevated the scene to a new level and brought out many a craft beer gourmand.

Great South Bay Brewery | Blood Orange Pale Ale

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Carly.  She went for a stroll along the water front in Brooklyn.  Pretty soon, she came upon an unassuming bar.  She peeked inside, and when the bartender beckoned, she walked right in. Atop a stool at the counter, there were many taps of craft beer and Carly was thirsty.

Packing some punch from the Great South Bay of Long Island, New York is the Blood Orange Pale Ale. I call it the Goldilocks of Pale Ales — not too tangy, not too tart, this one is just right. The combination of American hops, malted barley and bitter blood oranges stir up a frenzy of flavors in your mouth that radiate across your tongue. While emitting a florally fresh scent that is expected from Cascade hops, they also play a part in adding a citrus-like quality to the body. The ale’s color is light, matching the mood one acquires upon drinking.
