The Pittsburgh craft beer scene has been making serious waves, or I should say serious brews, in the craft beer industry. Pittsburgh breweries have been brewing an assortment of different beer, from pale ales to hazy IPAs and wild ales to delicious barrel aged stouts – Pittsburgh’s craft beer scene has truly grown and, as a result, is starting to receive national recognition.

I am currently pursuing fitness goals, so I have not enjoyed a beer since January 1, 2018. Trust me… I miss it dearly! This list will consist of the beers I have consumed in 2017 and by the time I write another Ultimate 6er, I hope to have tasted some new beer in 2018. Iron Hill Brewery | Philly Special

I recently decided to make the hour drive to Iron Hill Brewery‘s Phoenixville, Pennsylvania location. So with my fiancée and daughter in tow, I braved some pretty terrible parking conditions. After a brisk walk down Bridge Street, we were there. Iron Hill is one of the winningest breweries in GABF history, and they brewed a beer for some more recent local champions — the Philadelphia Eagles. Named for the trick play that sealed the Eagles’ victory, Philly Special is a beer that has a few tricks up its own sleeves.

Beer pairing dinners are forcing their way into the spotlight, fighting for the same notoriety as the traditional wine pairing dinners many of us are accustomed to seeing. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve, or another special occasion, a multi-course menu with a specific wine for each course is a welcome treat from any restaurant. Fort Collins’ Mainline Ale House takes this concept and turns it into something those of us in Colorado will be more receptive to—beer pairing dinners.

Mainline Ale House is not content with beers from some of the biggest names in the craft beer game. While Odell and Prost have made their presence felt with the previous beer dinners, this time Mainline turned to Snowbank Brewing for their February beer pairing dinner. Surly Brewing is known for a variety of beers, but their stout series, Darkness, is one of the best known beers the Minneapolis brewery releases. I sincerely believe Ohio is among the most exciting beer states in the country right now, though I am undoubtedly biased. I’ve lived in the Buckeye state for all fifteen years of my legal drinking life, and I’ve watched Ohio’s craft scene explode along with the rest of the country’s. While many of our breweries have gained national recognition, many more truly excellent breweries remain largely unheralded outside of our state borders. To be honest, it’s one of the things I love about our beer scene here; visitors don’t expect the incredible Belgian beers of Rockmill Brewery, or the farmhouse prowess of Little Fish, or the world-class lambics of Rivertown, or the all-around brilliance of Jackie O’s.

Event Preview | Boulder’s Winter Craft Beer Festival

The Winter Craft Beer Festival is out with a pour list that’s sure to coax even the most stubborn out of hibernation.

The festival, taking place in Boulder on March 3, boasts a lineup of 52 breweries from 10 states this year, including Colorado mainstays Oskar Blues Brewery, Odell Brewing Co. and Left Hand Brewing, as well as out-of-state favorites like Surly Brewing Co. of Minnesota and Dogfish Head Brewery of Delaware. Cold-weather styles like porters, stouts and Belgian strong ales are prevalent, though the list is also rounded out by lagers, IPAs and offerings as diverse as sours and even a chili beer. 

Regardless of their size or origin, participating breweries will have one thing in common this year: They satisfy the Brewers Association definition of “independent craft brewer.”

The first image that pops into my head at the word Pilgrim involves folks wearing tall hats and large-buckled shoes while sharing turkey and Stove Top stuffing with the Indians at Plymouth Rock. You know, historically accurate stuff. Nonetheless, the general premise of the American story involves a pilgrimage — a significant, spiritual journey to a new, location of importance. And although the Swiss do not celebrate ye olde pilgrimage to the New World in search of canned cranberry sauce and green bean casserole, I found a brewery here that celebrates pilgrims in another way.
