Russian River Brewing Company | Consecration

September 3, 2015 |

ABV 10%

Russian River Brewing Company is not only regarded as one of the best breweries in California, but also in the country. The other day I had the great pleasure of visiting their brew pub and the first thing I noticed was the phenomenal selection of beers to choose from. They have everything from sessions to pilsners to stouts to porters and their famous IPA’s and wilds/sours. The demand for all the Russian River Brewing Company beers is high due to their philosophy that it is easier to make better beer than it is to make more beer! I have not had a beer aged in wine-barrels I have enjoyed as much as Consecration. Read More

The DC Improv Comedy Club decided it would bring DC Brau into its bar taps to happily fuel the crews and attendees of its late-night shows and support the local brew. Being creative souls, The DC Improv team wanted to have some fun with this effort.

Uinta Brewing Company | Red IPL

August 17, 2015 |

6.2% ABV | 57 IBU

This time last year we found ourselves in the middle of summer and a social media frenzy. The buzz was everywhere with the ‘brrr’ of buckets being gleefully poured over anxious participants. Being nominated to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge ourselves, we experienced the excitement firsthand. It’s great to have fun while spreading awareness about a serious condition (and not to mention raising some serious cash to benefit research to find a cure). Read More

Roundtable Discussion | Favorite Added Ingredient in Beer

August 12, 2015 |

Oh beer. How you dazzle us with your notes of coffee, fruit, chocolate and/or herbs. Sometimes you get strange on us with your flavoring and add things like celery, squid ink or oysters to the mix.

Either way, we asked our staff to tell us their favorite added ingredients.

Ultimate 6er | DC Swamp 6-Pack

August 5, 2015 |

The DC crew of PorchDrinking.com actually doesn’t get together terribly often; you all know that we’re important young professionals who wine and dine on K Street each evening. When we do get together, notably to welcome a new writer (hi, Emily Gallt!), we sip and taste beers, both old and new favorites.

Featured image is the Southwest Waterfront in DC on a muggy, sticky summer night. All other images courtesy of corresponding breweries.

We recently met at Penn Commons, a great restaurant and bar in Chinatown that boasts a solid beer list. It was a sweltering day, so we were aching for anything to cool us down. Here’s our picks. Read More

Virginia’s Portner Brewhouse Lands Location

August 4, 2015 |

It’s been more than four years in the making — well, more like 99 years, if you look at it literally. Portner Brewhouse announced its location in Alexandria, Virginia this month and plans to open its doors in June 2016.

A pair of sisters, Catherine (Cat) and Margaret Portner, will resurrect a piece of family and local brewing history when they open their brewery, restaurant and craft beer test kitchen next summer. Read More

July 30, 2015 |

It keeps growing and growing and growing. The 2015 DC Beer Week looks to be bigger and better organized than ever. The event first started in 2008 (here’s our 2013 coverage) and is run by a slew of who’s who in the DC beer world.

It starts Aug. 9 and runs through Aug. 16. Events are spread throughout the city and the team wisely compiled a list of “hot spots,” bars and breweries that will offer multiple events throughout the week, like ChurchKey, RFD and Bluejacket. Read More

Barrels & Bottles Brewery | the Big LeBEERski

July 22, 2015 |

I’ve seen a trend in craft beer lately that includes both a.) coffee and b.) “golden” stouts. I had yet to try a beer combining both of these trendy concepts  — then I did at Barrels & Bottles Brewery last night! I never seem to get over being blown away by the fact that a beer the color of an ale or IPA could taste so roasty and chocolatey, as one the color of a traditional stout does, but that is just the case with the Big LeBEERski. Rude Hippo Brewing | Beeting Heart

July 13, 2015 |

ABV: 6.7%

Beets are awesome. First of all, their name differs from beer by only one letter. They are also nutritionally diverse in vitamins and minerals, and therefore benefit important organs such the heart, liver, kidneys, and eyes. Some folks even claim they have cancer-preventing and -fighting capabilities. I have been both a long-time beet lover and a long-time beer lover, but I never once thought to combine the two. I am certainly glad someone did. Read More

Ultimate 6er | 2016 Presidential Contenders (Part II)

July 8, 2015 |

When I wrote the original Ultimate 6er for 2016 Presidential Contenders list, there were only four confirmed presidential candidates across the political spectrum. To my delight, 15 candidates have announced since then, making it high time for a second round of the Ultimate 6er: 2016 Presidential Contenders.

Ultimate 6er | Bottle Share Shakedown

June 24, 2015 |

It’s always a good start to the weekend getting a group text from your friend: “Hey, I brought back a different beer from each of the countries I’ve visited in Europe and I’d like to host a bottle share.” Granted, this friend would be flying back that morning! So, round up the troops, snag a couple of brews from our stash and head on down the way.
