Folksbier Brauerei opened in early 2017 on a quiet street in Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens neighborhood, just a stone’s throw from Other Half Brewing Company. While Other Half has had explosive growth with their constantly changing list of hazy IPAs, Folksbier’s model is quite different with a more consistent lineup focusing on traditional ales and lagers. This is not necessarily keeping up with the latest trends, but maybe that’s changing slowly.
Miguel Rivas is the international man of beerstery. In 2013, his photography hobby morphed while visiting the Trappist Abbeys in Belgium. Capturing the sights sparked an artistic outlet for the stay-at-home father of two. Photography is a passion for Rivas, so it was clear to combine his thirst for taking pictures with his love for beer. Since then, Rivas successfully branded himself as The BeerTrekker and passing the five-year mark, his project is strong and still growing.
There’s so many age old questions in life. What came first—the chicken or the egg? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? Who was in the kitchen with Dinah? And perhaps the most important, what was it that Jenny Said?
While pondering some of life’s biggest questions, I was busy browsing the shelves of my local grocery store trying to decide on a beer for this showcase. As I rounded the corner, several 16oz. cans caught my eye. Jenny Said, an imperial IPA from SingleCut Beersmiths was the way to go.

Similar to our recent post covering breweries country-wide, we have also connected with a handful of brewers from NYC to reflect on this past year and what 2017 has in store for their up-and-coming breweries, as well as the craft beer industry as a whole. Four top-notch rising breweries in Brooklyn have shared intimate insights and projections for what’s next: Threes Brewing, Interboro Spirit & Ales, Finback Brewery and Kings County Brewers Collective.
It’s no secret that music lovers endured some major losses in 2016. Prince, Sharon Jones, Leonard Cohen, Merle Haggard… Bowie… and, sadly, the list goes on. But as we face the final weeks of any year, we are relieved by feelings of closure and of hope for what the new year may bring. What adventures 2017 holds for each of us is yet to be seen, but there is excitement in the unknown and comfort in the notion that we can resolve to start anew.
A nostalgic fave is coming back–hard. Root Beer is definitely one of those new craft beer-craze styles I’ve been hesitant to try. Mainly, I am not a huge soda drinker. However, I’v always loved a cold, rich, full-bodied birch beer whether it be on a hot, summer day or cool, autumn evening. So, if you fall into the “I’m new to craft beer” or “I like to try everything” or simply “I need a wow-factor for my taste-buds”, I’d suggest giving this one a go!
Ah, New York City. You’ve made it! Even if only for a weekend. As you read our guide, keep in mind that although we have enough recs to heavily stack your stay with activities, NYC is best enjoyed in small doses. Pace yourself to what feels doable, OR, do it BIG style.

February has come to a close, and with it, a new playing field for craft beer. During NYC Beer Week, Shmaltz Brewing’s tasting event for their newly released Funky Jewbelation left me reminiscing of a flavor not easily forgotten. The name is certainly indicative of what awaits beneath the bottle cap.

The stockings are all gone and trees line the street, but vision of Mad Elf labels still dance through my mind, as I reminisce on the fun we had at Christmas time! If you had a holiday season packed like mine, with a craft beer line-up to accommodate every party, then we might be sharing the same buzz, well into the new year.
A common adage in this industry is to “do one thing you’re good at and do it right”. While most breweries I’ve come across start off living this truth, not all end up sticking to the original plan. Last month, I hopped on the 4 train after work to accept an invitation for a private tasting up at The Bronx Brewery. What I discovered was a pioneering pair of brewers who practice what they preach: the pale ale.

If you are a baseball fan on any level, this beer’s clever naming convention has probably already clicked with the compartment of your brain designated for phrases, puns and parlance. According to The Bronx Brewery of New York, On The Black is not only a term for a pitcher during a prime performance, but also a brewer at their best. After my encounter with said beer in the field, I find it hard to argue otherwise.

We already know KelSo Beer Co. as a do-good brewery in Brooklyn with an expert brewer backing the name. What hasn’t been vicariously delivered from my words to your tastebuds however, is the incredibly simple but flavor-packed lineup that KelSo has to offer year round. I’m coming back to this favorited brewery of my PorchDrinking’s past with another promising must-try recommendation: Nut Brown Lager.
There are moments in a cook or food junky life that one will never forget – those moments we have been planning for so long that when the occasion finally arises you simply don’t know what to think. Two years ago, I had one of those “pinch me” moments in New York City. I was about to eat at Eleven Madison Park, a three Michelin star restaurant currently ranked No. 5 in the world on the prestigious San Pellegrino Top 100 Restaurants List. As a complete nerd about food and the total dining experience, for me this was Mecca! Add on top of that a beer cellar that rivals many of the best beer cafes in the world and you have one hell of a night ahead! Let’s just say I was a little too excited.

When it comes to ingestion, there are no two substances I love more together than craft beer and red meat. This is the sole reason I am known by the servers at Bill’s Burger in the Meatpacking District on a first name basis. Whenever I am within walking distance of the joint, my feet involuntarily turn and pace straight towards the front door, stopping only by the contentment of being seated at a high top table, adorned with it’s infamous red and white checked table cloth atop.
Building your own brewing company during the few hours you are not earning an income is no easy feat, but for co-founders Marshall & Eric, the support of friends and family, vendor connections, and a goal-breaking Kickstarter campaign has made the experience more rewarding than rigorous. Our own Stacey Goers highlighted her interview with the two friends on how it all came together in the latter half of 2013. Now, a little over a year to date, Braven Brewing’s “dream” is transforming into “reality” as kegs make their way into Brooklyn bars and craft beer lovers’ hearts.
If there is one thing I absolutely need so that I cheerfully adjust to the seasonal transition of Fall, it would have to be pumpkin. Nothing says comfort like an over-sized sweater, multicolored horizon, warm fireplace, and a tall pint.
