While it has been used for thousands of years in brewing, honey is an up and coming star of the craft beer world. Brewers are becoming more aware of the myriad possibilities it presents. Honey provides multiple potential contributions to beer depending on how and when it’s used in the brewing process and has a dizzying range of flavors. Factors such as terroir, the botanicals visited by the bees, and even the time of year the pollen was gathered all affect flavor. So what exactly does honey do for beer, and why do breweries use it?

Tröegs Independent Brewing invites you to celebrate all things hoppy at the 2nd Annual Harvest Hopfest to be held this weekend. The festivities will include three new limited beers inspired by the brewery’s hop selection trips to the Pacific Northwest, as well as the return of the HopDash 5k to the brewery in Hershey, PA. They’ll also feature daily IPA firkin tappings and live music in our Beer Garden including performances from Palm City Ramblers, Rivers, and more.

Tröegs Independent Brewing holds a special place in my heart. I had enjoyed trying new beers since I studied abroad in Germany around the turn of the century, but a visit to the Tröegs production brewery in Hershey, Pennsylvania is at the epicenter of my ever-blossoming beer geekery. In the five years since that visit, I’ve enjoyed watching their beer lineup change and evolve. With roots in Tröegs’ Scratch program and a new home in the Hop Cycle Seasonal lineup, Hop Knife Harvest Ale is a beer that I’ve been enjoying since its first wide release.
Tröegs Independent Brewing has been a staple of Pennsylvania’s craft beer scene for over 20 years, and last week they got even bigger. Eight new 1,000-barrel fermenters were installed at the Hershey, PA brewery. Once online, these will greatly increase the brewery’s production capacity. By moving the flagship and more popular seasonal beers into these larger fermentation vessels, smaller tanks will now be freed up for small batch offerings.
The inclusion of so many Pennsylvania breweries was a happy accident brought on by sleep deprivation, but I’m sticking with it. I love the beers brewed in my commonwealth and thing that you should drink them no matter where you live. I will personally guide any and all beer tourists to the best breweries in PA. I mean… I’ll do it if I’m not busy. I’ll probably be busy… Have no fear, dear reader. We have plenty of fun the rest of the country in this edition of The Weekly Buzz, too.

This was a pretty fun week for social media. Not only did the Super Bowl provide endless, hilarious supply of brewery-on-brewery trolling, but there was lots of other fun stuff, too. There were breweries checking in from beer festivals, new beers, distribution announcements, job listings, and more. Don’t worry. Things are finally getting back to normal after the holidays. There are no more family gatherings to attend, and I’m no longer in denial about how fat I’ve gotten.
