What We’re Drinking | November 24, 2017

November 24, 2017 |

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. On this day of over-indulgence in food and drink, the PorchDrinkers did not eschew their primary mission: to drink great beer. Not every meal may have been traditional, but we all had freely flowing craft beer in common. Whether you drank out of pure holiday spirit, or you were trying to avoid discussing politics with an elderly Fox News-viewing relative, beer is a required libation at any holiday meal. Grandma, Uncle Joe and Sister-in-Law Carol, this is What We’re Drinking.

Brewery Showcase | Bonn Place Brewing Company

November 21, 2017 |

Nestled in the southside of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania—a stone’s throw away from the Sands Casino, SteelStacks and Lehigh University’s Asa Packer Campus—is the little brewery that could. Going from a grand opening to two GABF medals in just over a year requires a lot of hard work, dedication and a metric shitload of positive thinking. The team at Bonn Place Brewing Company has all of these things, while still making the time to greet each and every patron as they enter (many of them by name).

What We’re Drinking | November 10, 2017

November 10, 2017 |

Every week, the PorchDrinking staff puts their livers through a crucible of pain in order to find the most beautiful brews. This week was no exception. Yes, we did need copious amounts of Pedialyte, but we did preserve through the morning-after headaches and greasy diner breakfast platters. With the weekend fast approaching, we present you with a few new options. This is What We’re Drinking.

The Weekly Buzz | November 3 – 9

November 10, 2017 |

This week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz is going to be a little shorter than usual. It’s November, and cold weather has finally arrived, but I refuse to admit it and fire up the furnace. It is a brisk 54 degrees in my living room, and I will soon be departing to enjoy some free heat at my local gym. I might even work out, too! In the meantime, here’s some stuff I found on the internet. Cheers!

Event Recap | Deer Creek Malthouse’s Malt-A-Palooza

November 7, 2017 |

You couldn’t have asked for a better setting. An idyllic hillside farm—complete with sheep and a horse—is the perfect place to celebrate the harvest and crafting of one of beer’s most important ingredients: malt. Malted grain imbues beers with sweetness, chocolatey notes and bready, biscuity flavors. Without malt, wort wouldn’t contain any sugar for the yeast to convert into alcohol. In today’s “drink local” craft beer scene, shouldn’t beer contain local ingredients, instead of just being brewed locally? Deer Creek Malthouse’s Malt-A-Palooza sought to celebrate that exact idea and succeeded.

Double Nickel Brewing Company Rebrands as Second Anniversary Approaches

October 31, 2017 |

After nine months of careful planning, Double Nickel Brewing Company of Pennsauken, NJ finally unveiled its upcoming rebrand with a clean website, bold packaging, and tasting room updates in the works. The aesthetic is simple and modern while incorporating elements of vintage design. The result? A feeling of both novelty and nostalgia.

With a goal of “bridging vision and tradition” and a core series comprised of modern-brewed versions of classic beer styles, the new look more effectively conveys the personality and mission of the brewery—making beer that transcends the generational taste differences.

What We’re Drinking | October 27, 2017

October 27, 2017 |

Once upon a time, there was an intrepid fellowship of PorchDrinkers. They had to destroy a ring in a volcano (or something like that), but they could only truly break the ring’s evil curse if they drank every craft beer in America. What follows is an account of the battles they have fought and won during the past week. Fear not, dear readers, our heroes WILL complete their quest to free the world from its horrifying sobriety. This is What We’re Drinking.

The Weekly Buzz | October 20 – 26

October 27, 2017 |

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you’re completely and totally scatterbrained? I am having one right now. I can’t believe I even managed to pull together this modest collection of social media nonsense. It just goes to show that you can complete any task if you procrastinate until the last possible second and then scroll through Twitter at a frantic pace. So, in honor of my half-assery – which may or may not be a word – let’s raise a glass and dive into The Weekly Buzz.

New Yards Brewery & Taproom To Open in Philadelphia

October 26, 2017 | 1

This November, Yards Brewing Company will expand into a new location in Philadelphia’s beer-savvy Northern Liberties neighborhood. Located at 500 Spring Garden Street and called Yards Brewery and Taproom, this expansion provides a new 70,000-sqare-foot facility to produce their approachable ales and lagers. Yards was already one of the most recognizable craft beer brands in the city, but the move to this facility – located only blocks from the historic Liberty Bell – helps to cement their reputation as “Philadelphia’s Brewery”.

The Weekly Buzz | October 13 – 19

October 20, 2017 |

Another week has gone by, and I’ve spent too many hours on Twitter. I think it’s affecting my personality. I engaged a troll the other day, and I don’t even know why! Is there a 12-step program for  Social Media? I’m not saying that I have a problem, but, I mean, it’s pretty likely that I have a problem. Anyway… Here is some fun beer stuff that I found for you! Saddle up, dear readers! It’s time for The Weekly Buzz.

On Saturday, October 7, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant won two silver medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. This brings their lifetime medal count to 47, but that isn’t even the astonishing part of this story. These medals—one for their Russian Imperial Stout in the Imperial Stout category and the other for Solzhenitzen in the Aged Beer category—extend an already amazing GABF medal-winning streak to an unprecedented 21 consecutive years.

Weyerbacher Brewing | Dallas Sucks

October 12, 2017 |

Like most residents of southeastern Pennsylvania, I am a Philadelphia Eagles fan. If there is one truth that any good Eagles fan holds above all others, it is the fact that the Dallas Cowboys are the scourge of the NFC East and must be destroyed. There’s definitely someone over at Weyerbacher who bleeds green because they have just released the perfect beer for tailgating at Lincoln Financial Field. They even gave it the perfect name: Dallas Sucks.

The Weekly Buzz | September 29 – October 5

October 6, 2017 |

I hear that there is some kind of beer festival in Denver this week, but I don’t want to discuss those things. OK, I do want to discuss those things, but I won’t because I’m jealous and spiteful. Somebody had to stay home and mind the store, so it may as well be me. Due to the grudge I’m choosing to hold, there will be no further mention of that festival. For everyone else who is stuck at home, here is The Weekly Buzz.

What We’re Drinking | September 29, 2017

September 29, 2017 |

It’s almost October. Why is it so damn hot outside? I’m usually a lover of spring and fall, so this unseasonable warmth has to stop. Instead of enjoying Porters and Brown Ales outside, I’m drinking Session IPAs and Pilsners in the air conditioning like some kind of animal! When will the insanity end?! In an attempt to stay cool and kill time while autumn drags its feet, I prepared a special double-issue for you to enjoy. Fire up the AC, pack yourself in ice and get ready to see What We’re Drinking.
