Urban Chestnut Brewing Company | Erlkönig
February 22, 2016 | Niel Stender
ABV: 8.3%
I really appreciate the stories Urban Chestnut Brewing Company spins on its beer labels. The ancient tale referenced on Erlkönig is especially interesting. This beer, a double wheat bock ale, falls into their “Revolution Series” which is a nod to the revolution of modern craft beer in America taking place in urban areas like St. Louis. The story behind Erlkönig however, could not be less modern. Dating to a poem written in 1782 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, it describes a boy and his father resisting the lure of a mysterious Elf King. It’s worth a read if you’re into the strange and supernatural. So, how’s the beer?

2 Days, 2 Nights | Enjoying Beer in Perth, Western Australia
February 19, 2016 | Lindsay Snyder 2
You’ve done it, you’ve traveled as far as you can possibly get from the continental United States, to the world’s loneliest city – Perth, Western Australia. Perth is 1,300 mi by land to the closest similarly-sized city – Adelaide (if you want to be nit-picky, Auckland and Honolulu are more remote, but they’re islands, so I’m not counting them). Now that you’ve accomplished this geographic feat, my first advice is to leave. Get out. You didn’t come all this way to marvel at the city center with skyscrapers that remind you of Denver or Seattle or Brussels or any other Western city. Grab a quick 45 minute Uber to the coastal town of Fremantle and begin your Western Australia adventure.
Ore Dock Brewing Company | Ski Bum Wheat
February 19, 2016 | Timston Johnston
5.5% ABV
I don’t ski in the same way I don’t bowl or attend weddings—if I have to rent special footwear, it’s not worth my time. This nonparticipation can be traced back to 1998, specifically Sonny Bono’s skiing accident. His death fueled a fear within that kept me from a middle school trip to a local hill. My paranoia was further confirmed when a friend returned to school the following Monday with a gash and stitches above his eye; he had caught a tow rope with his face. By springtime, he wore a scar that said he had done (and survived) something substantial. I, however, relishing in my newfound neuroticism, was about the same. Unimpressive as ever.

Ultimate 6er | The 88th Academy Awards

Out of all the great events in February, The Academy Awards always stand out as the true final hurrah for the previous year. It’s easy to get caught up in the fervor of the Oscars similar to that of the Super Bowl, rooting for your favorite films while trying to guess the odds between critical vs. commercial praise. And if you are in a movie league like I am, or if you were just one of 36+ Million Viewers from last year, there’s got to be plenty of beer flowing from both sides of the screen.

Fighting traffic, navigating through throngs of people crossing the street, cramming into train car nooks, tapping impatiently while waiting for a bus to show up — chances are, your daily commute provides some nice slices of stress between which you sandwich your workday.
