January 28, 2021 | Tristan ChanIn episode 74 of the PorchCast, we dove into some heady recent topics relating to Boulevard Brewing’s sexual harassment allegations and how they responded to those claims. It should be noted that almost concurrently as this episode was being aired, Boulevard Brewing issued a second updated statement where they did in fact acknowledge their fault in sexual harassment claims and clarified that the employee in question has been fired. Booneshine Brewing Co. | Space Pegasus NE Style IPA
January 28, 2021 | Dave DruryLocated in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina, Booneshine Brewing Co. calls the town of Boone its home. And, like many of the residents of Boone, they are explorers and adventurers, and their beers reflects that—both in name and ingredients.
Their Space Pegasus—a New England-style IPA—is also aptly named after exploring, as it will take you on an “intergalactic adventure”.
Novel Strand Brewing Releasing ALL CAPS Tribute to MF DOOM
January 27, 2021 | Tristan ChanShrouded in mystery even through his recent passing, the iconic hip hop artist Daniel Dumile, who performed as MF DOOM, had a profound impact on the genre as a whole, in addition to his rabid fanbase.
A long time hip hop fan, Novel Strand co-founder and head brewer Tamir Danon, wanted to pay homage to the iconoclast, who he felt influenced hip hop artists and helped get a lot of people into the genre dating back to the early ’90s. Understanding the delicate nature of wanting to pay tribute without exploiting the artist’s passing can be a difficult balance, Danon wanted to ensure that the focus of the brand remains on the artists’ lyrics and talents. On the back label, Danon worked with an artist to transcribe lyrics from DOOM’s track, ALL CAPS with emphasis on particular words to translate the way it should be sung.
Ultimate 6er | Beers for (Double) Dry (Hopped) January
January 27, 2021 | Kindsey BernhardWhile many of you are participating in Dry January, some of us are participating in Double Dry-Hopped January. Double dry-hopping is the process of adding hops after the wort is cooled, twice to add those beautiful hop aromas to a beer. You are essentially dry-hopping the beer twice. There is no real set way to brew a DDH beer because every brewery and brewer has their own way of doing it. It’s all in the science and creativity of making this beautiful liquid we all love. Here are six beers to drink this (Double) Dry (Hopped) January.
Oconee Brewing Co. | Bacon & Kegs Bacon-Infused Red Ale
January 27, 2021 | Brandon CohranSince the holiday chaos and rush has slowed down, it’s a good time for some reflection. We wrapped up some of our favorite beers and the biggest beer stories across our regions to end 2020. One story that caused a greasy splash was the collaboration between Waffle House and Georgia’s own Oconee Brewing Company for an official beer.
Now, a few weeks later, we’re wiping down the table and diving into the bacon-infused Red Ale that is Bacon & Kegs.

Ology Brewing Co. | Reactive Galvanization IPA
January 26, 2021 | Casey StreetOlogy Brewing Co. produced yet another phenomenal IPA with its Reactive Galvanization, an American IPA that reminds us just why IPA remains the king of craft beer.
The Tallahassee, FL brewery has its roots steeped in scientific research, and in fact, the very word “ology” means a subject of study–think “biology,” “archeology” or “beer-ology.” Head brewer Nick Walker is from a family of scientists and researchers. His grandfather studied taste and his father researched olfaction, the study of smell, which certainly came in use during the many, many beer tastings Nick has done over the years. Walker himself has a bachelor’s degree in biology. Put that all together and Ology Brewing emerges from this wealth of knowledge. Ology actually made PorchDrinking’s 2018 list of Rising Talent and they’ve only improved since then.
Book Review | Beer and Racism
January 25, 2021 | Ruvani de SilvaMost people of color living in majority-white countries regularly encounter racism, be it violent, cruel and open prejudice or nasty little microaggressions. Sadly, this is a fact. But what do you do when your job, your hobby or both are imbued with structural racism? When it stops being about individual attitudes and becomes about organizational and institutional frameworks and hierarchies that, in their very nature, are skewed to exclude people of color?

What We’re Drinking | January 22, 2021
January 22, 2021 | Seth GarlandThe PorchDrinking team was out in force supporting craft breweries the past several days; look at all this fantastic beer. I think I got a second-hand buzz just compiling the list this week. Whatever other media you feed yourself today, hopefully you put aside some time to just be in the moment, take a deep breath and crack open a beer — one big cheers to you all.
Outdoor Spaces During Covid-19 | Brass Ring Brewery
January 22, 2021 | Jessica SpenglerIn 2020, we entered a new normal. When once we crowded hip-to-hip in breweries and barrooms, we now spread out six feet, stick to our tables, and wear masks whenever we move about. During summertime, since outdoor eating is a norm many people enjoy, it felt a little bit better, a bit less stifled. But in late fall, when cold weather set in and a surge in COVID-19 cases caused a new round of indoor dining closures throughout the country, breweries, bars and restaurants had to get creative. Plastic outdoor igloos began to show up, allowing a private space for groups to gather outside. Some establishments chose to keep their patios “as-is,” installing large space heaters to keep people warm and cozy. But others have gone a different route, to stand out due to cost issues — or because as the weather gets colder, even large space heaters don’t do the trick.
Here at Porchdrinking.com, we’ve decided to highlight the creativity of these establishments to keep their businesses open, even when indoor dining is an absolutely non-starter. Our first profile is Grand Rapids, Michigan’s Brass Ring Brewery, and their colorful ice shanties.
Lost Friend Brewing Co. | The Bitter One West Coast IPA

PorchDrinking Dream Bottle Share | Stan Hieronymus
January 21, 2021 | Tristan ChanSince our launch in 2012, PorchDrinking has celebrated its anniversary each year by throwing a big bottle share for all of our industry friends, supporters, and staff because to us, bottle shares are the truest form of beer lovers coming together as a community. However, 2020 was an unorthodox year, and as much as we would have loved to mark our 8th anniversary with another share, we figured that passing bottles in an enclosed space during a pandemic probably wasn’t the best idea.

Now the Atlanta-based brewery is primed for rapid expansion and today announced that they are ready to launch throughout Colorado beginning February 1, 2021.
More Than Beer | Root Shoot Craft Malting Connects With The Land
January 21, 2021 | Scott Grossman 1Sometimes the crafting of craft beer goes beyond the creativity and hard work of a brewer. Root Shoot Malting of Loveland, CO., is a family farm and craft maltster that supplies the Rocky Mountain region with craft malt and grains. In addition to providing quality ingredients today, Root Shoot is working to insure that their land remains available to grow grain for the beers of tomorrow.
Founded by Todd and Emily Olander, Root Shoot supplies barley, wheat, rye and corn to craft brewers and distillers. The Olanders grow these grains on their own 112-acre farm and approximately 1500 leased acres. Their malthouse then transforms much of the crop into a portfolio of craft malts using their own proprietary process. Read More

This is their second year brewing Milk Stout, and locals are glad to see it come back. Last year the beer was so popular, they ran out earlier than expected. This year you should be able to find it on store shelves (and at one of their four locations in Lincoln and Omaha) into mid-March.
