You Can’t Spell Union Without U and I

January 27, 2023 |

On January 17th, 2023, the nearly 100 current employees of Creature Comforts Brewing in Athens, GA filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to unionize under a brand new independent labor banner — BUG or the Brewery Union of Georgia. This does not mean that Creature Comforts has officially unionized their labor force, as a formal election process amongst employees must take place to solidify the new structure and then head to the bargaining table, but BUG organizers are optimistic about the vote. The discussion about unionization began earlier last summer and progressed quickly as many employees cited feeling neglected, overburdened, and unsupported by upper management, who have been busy planning the expansion of a new Creature Comforts facility in Los Angeles. BUG also believes that unionization embraces Creature Comforts’ overarching company values such as ‘“existing to foster human connection” and “building a balanced team of authentic and professional individuals.”

Ultimate 6er | So Your Team Didn’t Make the Playoffs: Bitter Beers for Salty Tears

January 20, 2021 |

No one really had a “great” sports experience in 2020. But for die-hard fans, sports was one of the pieces of normality (fake crowd noise and all) that kept us hanging onto sanity by tiny little threads. The kind of threads that fray from knock-off jerseys ordered on Wish. The kind of threads that protrude from a worn-out pair of pajamas you’ve been wearing for three days straight. Now that we’re just a couple weeks out from the Super Bowl, why not reopen some old wounds and take a look back at 2020?

Creature Comforts to Open Los Angeles Taproom & Production Facility

August 12, 2020 |

Creature Comforts, which has long garnered national attention from its humble roots located in an old tire shop in downtown Athens, Georgia is no stranger to making headlines.

Back in 2019, they made a superhero-sized splash as audiences around the world saw not one, but two of their fan-favorite year-round beers star on screen. This, of course, was in the highest-grossing movie of all time, Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. Read More

5 Questions With…Creature Comfort’s Director of Community & Culture, Matt Stevens

June 18, 2019 |

A brewer’s influence can expand well beyond the beer you buy in a taproom or the cans you see on shelves. Craft brewers today realize that their presence in their local communities can inspire positive change and network effects that help their neighbors and taproom regulars alike. Athens, GA-based Creature Comforts Brewing Co. is one of the breweries defining what it means for a brewer to be authentically connected to their community. In early 2018, Creature Comforts hired Matt Stevens to be their Community and Culture Director; his job description includes running their Get Comfortable and Get Artistic charity initiatives.

An Extended Summer: The Gose’s Evolution into a Year-Long Staple

January 18, 2019 |

It’s the dead of winter and I’m not drinking a burly, barrel-aged stout – or even an IPA. Instead, I’ve cracked open a can of Creature Comforts’ Tritonia Gose. Was I envisioning a beach on some far off island? Or a sweltering summer sun? Nope, I just wanted something light and flavorful that wasn’t a lager and wouldn’t weigh me down like some of the heavier stouts and barleywines I’ve had on winter night’s past; and I’m not alone in this sentiment.

Much like the rise of spiked seltzer, the lighter styles of beer, namely session sours such as gose ale, are experiencing a bit of a renaissance this days as folks are beginning to choose tart and tangy beers for their ability to bridge the gap between calorie-conscious and flavor-packed. IPAs aren’t going away – to the contrary even. However, many breweries have begun to appreciate the gose’s spot in giving their beer lineup a bit of balance along with a burst of new flavors. For more insight into the growing popularity of the style over the past few years, I asked several breweries making some of the best gose-style ales in the nation to get their thoughts.

Brew Day Playlists | Creature Comforts Brewing Co.

September 4, 2018 |

In this edition of the PorchDrinking Playlist, we bring you the music that inspires Georgia’s very own Creature Comforts Brewing Co. In the past four years, Creature Comforts has grown to become not only one of Georgia’s most well-respected breweries, but also one of the country’s fastest-growing brands. Who knew they were going to draw fans from all over the nation? As always, we were curious about what kind of music resonates within the walls of the restored historic warehouse while whipping up fresh batches of brews. Just how does the sound reverberate across the walls with the guts dating back to the 1940s? Does this influence the beer being produced? Let’s find out!

Creature Comforts Brewing Co. | Get Artistic Tart Wheat Beer

July 23, 2018 |

Creature Comforts Brewing Co. makes great beer; they also make great beer with a purpose. Their recent initiative, Get Artistic Tart Wheat beer, is a fitting testament to this two-pronged approach. Announced earlier this summer, the Get Artistic beer is part of a larger campaign aimed at finding  “creative ways to add value the local arts community” in Athens, Georgia. The kicker: 100% of the profits from the beer and its corresponding flashy merchandise will go towards funding the dreams, endeavors, and passions of local artists. Sounds like a win-win to me. Here’s my review.

Creature Comforts’ Get Comfortable Campaign Aims to Make an Impact on Athens

January 4, 2018 |

Craft beer is leaving its adolescence stage and venturing into adulthood. The maturing of craft brewers bodes well for the average consumer, but it also opens the market up to judgement by a higher societal standard. Craft beer can no longer skirt by as an emerging economic trend; it is now a prosperous and influential part of the U.S. economy, and it deserves to be treated as such. Outside of bottle releases and new taprooms, craft beer can make a verifiable impact on their local communities through outreach programs and charitable donations. Athens-based Creature Comforts is doing just that through their Get Comfortable campaign.
