Michigan basically jumped from winter to summer and everyone is slowly emerging from their igloos. In my neighborhood that means the first beautiful evening of the year smells like death as everyone burns off all the grit and winter rust on their grills. While good weather has arrived, it’s about a month late and everyone is geeked to make up for the lost time. For me, that means diving headfirst into arguably the best gose Michigan has to offer, Founder Brewing‘s Green Zebra.
Just as Santa prepares to deliver toys across the globe, Founders Brewing has announced what gifts it has in store for beer drinkers throughout 2019. Founders, which recently expanded its distribution to a total of 47 states by adding Colorado, has unveiled its 2019 Beer Release Calendar. One item that jumps off the page involves the inclusion of its increasingly popular Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS).
I just want to thank America for doing (mostly) the right thing this week. Great work everybody! Now that we’ve taken steps to reinstate a check on our country’s executive branch, I feel safe imbibing a fine craft-brewed beverage. Ah, CBS. Founder’s highly-praised Imperial Coffee Chocolate Stout returns for a second consecutive year starting November 2nd across their distribution footprint. This year’s version is different than the 2017 variant for several reasons.
First and most obviously, the iconic “mountie” is missing from the bottle and branding. Why? Everyone has ideas and Twitter has seen its fair share of wild speculation. My guess is they just wanted to refresh the brand and focus on this year’s beer. Which, by the way, is very very good. After a six-year hiatus, the CBS that returned in 2017 was good, but its maple syrup sweetness dominated the palate. That said, this year’s version is great, dare I say exceptional, because it brings this insanely complex beer back to equilibrium. It’s much more balanced than year’s past, which lets several flavors shine.
I’m not going to lie to you. You don’t deserve that. My week has been a scheduling hellscape, the likes of which has never been seen before. It is so hot in my house that I want to purchase a walk-in freezer to live inside. The worst part of this summer hasn’t even been the heat. The rain has been far more oppressive in the Northeast. In the last two weeks, I have pumped more water out of my basement than I did in the two years prior. It’s insanity. Good thing Climate Change is a hoax, or we’d really be screwed! Anyhoo… I found some beer stuff on social media, so I copied and pasted it for you to read. Welcome to The Weekly Buzz.
Well folks, the wait is finally over. After much speculation, Founders Brewing has shared news with PorchDrinking, that they will begin full distribution throughout the state of Colorado beginning mid-to-late October 2018.
On Thursday, August 23, The Brewers of Pennsylvania (BOP) hosted the 2018 Meeting of the Malts. The event, held at Bethlehem, Pa.’s ArtsQuest Center, is an annual gathering of Pennsylvania’s brewers, legislators and beer nerds. Serving as both a celebration of the state’s beer and a “State of the Industry” discussion, Meeting of the Malts was a beautiful evening full of even more beautiful beer.
My darling Buzzophiles, nary five days ago, I was forced to cast my gaze upon an unsightly pallet of gourd-flavored adult beverage. The fact that it was 95 degrees outside made me wonder if pumpkins were even in season yet. They are not. Last night, however, my faith in the beer-swilling gods was rekindled into a blazing fire as I stepped into a beautifully curated boutique bottle shop. There wasn’t a single “seasonal creep” beer in sight. That shop was my own personal nirvana, and almost completely negates the fact that I had to search Twitter for this edition of The Weekly Buzz.
Since we’re all gathered here around the Weekly Buzz hearth, allow Grandpappy Dan to spin a yarn about the good old days. A long time ago, fall seasonal beers — like pumpkin ales — used to be released in the fall, so that their warm spiciness and pumpkin sweetness could be enjoyed on cool autumn nights. Märzens (or Oktoberfests) would be released in September to coincide with Munich’s historic Oktoberfest festival, which runs from late September until early October. Much like the way certain big box chains stock bathing suits in February, these beers are releasing earlier and earlier. Does anyone really want to drink a Pumpkin Ale in July or August? I don’t believe that they do. Seasonality is a beautiful thing, but it is being lost as its lines are being blurred. If you don’t buy fall seasonals in August, they’ll stop releasing them in August.

Today is my eighth consecutive day of work. Six of those days were 12-hour shifts. I work another 12-hour day tomorrow. I’m tired. I’m cranky. There hasn’t been enough beer in my diet, so definitely send some of that my way. My social media time was limited, but I gladly burned the candle at both ends for you, my dedicated readers. I’m far too tired to give you a witty introduction. My body is aching. Migraine symptoms are setting in. I know that these are probably related to the amount of time I spend on Twitter, but I’m just too darn committed to compiling this dumb list of tweets for your enjoyment. Springtime is here and, for me, that can only mean one thing: sitting on my sunporch and drinking some fantastic IPAs. Thankfully, I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan (AKA Beer City, USA), which means I’m generally near the birthplace of some of the best made IPAs in the world. Michigan breweries know their IPAs, and Bell’s Brewery has blessed us with one helluva new brew in their recently released double IPA, Hopsoulution Ale.
I want to drink beer, but I don’t want to be fat. After daily two-hour workouts, I’m so tired that one beer makes me fall asleep. This wasn’t the effect I was going for. I just wanted to have a moderately repectable dad-bod. Becoming an old man who falls asleep halfway through an episode of Home Improvement was not the plan. We here at PorchDrinking hope that you spent this week’s holy days surrounded by friends, family and fine craft beers. April Fool’s Day is a sacred tradition that MUST be observed annually, so that we may keep our rich heritage of tomfoolery alive and vibrant. Founders Brewing is bringing its freshly-released KBS and the entire Grand Rapids experience to Tribes Beer Co., located in Chicago’s southern suburb of Tinley Park, on April 3. Along with the 2018 KBS, there will be a special menu, live music and a host of highly regarded beers such as ’17 KBS, CBS, Doom, Backwoods Bastard and Frootwood.
The event starts 5 p.m! All you need is an appetite and a thirst for good beer.
I barely drank any beer this week. The disappointment is very real. What compounds these feelings of regret is that I had to search for fun beer things on Twitter and Instagram all week.
