A lot of people have the wrong impression of Alaska. As I sat underneath the sunlight at a time that most places would be pitch black, I poured myself a beer from the appropriately named Midnight Sun Brewing Company and realized the fact that the state is barely glanced upon as a destination for beer lovers from the lower 48.

Each year one of the most exciting aspects of the Great American Beer Festival is the ability to explore and sample some of the country’s best new breweries that have emerged on the scene. Additionally, it can be equally as rewarding to revisit some familiar faces you may only get to try once each year at the country’s largest beer showcase. However with the growing nature of the festival, and the Brewer’s Association’s move to a lottery system, we also tend to lose some familiar friends. It would appear that the PorchDrinkers had a slow week. Personally, I found that I was getting too fat. This fatness led to a regimented, but not necessarily strict, diet and a week of “detox.” Not to make excuses, but I wouldn’t be surprised if other members of the PorchDrinking staff are finding themselves in the same boat. Sometimes you just need a short break from beer. Luckily, we always have a few die-hards to keep us afloat! This is What We’re Drinking.
Noon Whistle Brewing is Helping Bring Fully Removable Beer Can Lids to Illinois

Whether it’s in a can, bottle or on-draft, craft beer can be consumed in many ways. Now, thanks to a new state law backed by Chicago suburban brewery Noon Whistle Brewing, there will be a new way to drink: cans with completely removable lids.

Founders Brewing Company’s PC Pils has become my summer go-to beer. I’m not certain how that came to be–I didn’t search it out. I simply picked it out one day when looking for an easy drinking brew, and was pleasantly surprised with the light, refreshing style. Before long it became the natural beer to pick up when we were looking to drink something reliable and quenching.
Firestone Walker Releases Generation 1 IPA

In a world full of juicy IPAs, Firestone Walker (FWBC) is bringing Generation 1, an unfined and unfiltered West Coast IPA, to all its markets for a limited time (eight weeks). The beer is a product of the FWBC R&D program, located at the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice, California.

Brewpubs are not a new trend by any means, as they have been in business in St. Louis since at least 1991, when The Schlafly Tap Room opened just west of downtown. However, the practice of pairing a limited or full menu with beer brewed under the same roof continues to grow more popular in St. Louis, and few do it better than Ferguson Brewing Company.

I was strolling through my local Whole Foods’ beer department when my eye was drawn to something beautiful. It was a repeating pattern. Appearing almost like dark purple single-celled organisms with brighter violet nuclei, this pattern seemed to self-replicate across the face of the can, creating white insect shapes in the negative space. Once I read the description of the contents, I knew that Stillwater Artisanal’s Insetto would be coming home with me that night. Yes. The whole thing was exactly as creepily seductive as it sounds.

Green Flash Brewing Opening 3rd Brewery Location in Nebraska

Almost exactly a year removed from announcing their second brewery location in Virginia Beach, VA, Green Flash Brewing isn’t content with resting on its laurels. The San Diego, CA-based brewery announced this morning that it has acquired a 10,000 sq ft brewery, taproom and restaurant facility in Lincoln, NE.

Tribes Beer Company to Honor First Responders All September

Both Tribes Beer Company and Tribes Alehouse (suburban Chicago) will honor Police, Fire and EMTs/Paramedics, as well as their spouses and children, throughout September. If you have ever had Reviver from Starr Hill Brewery, then you already know that they know their way around a Red IPA. The latest addition to Starr Hill’s limited-run All Access Series is like Reviver dialed up to 11. This beer was brewed to be a sort of big brother to Reviver—a role model, if you will. I got my hands on a few bottles of Starr Hill’s Resinate, and I have to say that I enjoyed it.

Tröegs Adds 8,000 Barrels of Fermentation Capacity

Tröegs Independent Brewing has been a staple of Pennsylvania’s craft beer scene for over 20 years, and last week they got even bigger. Eight new 1,000-barrel fermenters were installed at the Hershey, PA brewery. Once online, these will greatly increase the brewery’s production capacity. By moving the flagship and more popular seasonal beers into these larger fermentation vessels, smaller tanks will now be freed up for small batch offerings.
