Brewery Showcase | Briar Common Brewery + Eatery

March 22, 2017 |

Feature photo credit: Briar Common Facebook

When Kent, Greg and Travis Dawson decided to make their dream of opening a brewery become a reality they started to look around the brewery scene in Denver and they realized that while there were plenty of new breweries opening up, very few of those breweries were dedicated to serving outstanding food to go along with the high-quality beer they were brewing.

“It was clear that the brewpub model was quickly being outnumbered by the manufacturing/tasting room model.”

Kent Dawson, co-founder of Briar Common Brewery + Eatery

Beer Cocktail | Baby Stout Jello Shots with Yard’s Love Stout

March 21, 2017 |

Just because St. Patrick’s Day is over that doesn’t mean the Irish festivities need to stop! We certainly won’t and neither should you. For many, Guinness comes to mind as the beer of choice for St. Paddy’s Day, but with so many options at our fingertips, it’s hard not to branch out. In accordance with tradition, however, it seemed only logical to attempt to take an already alcoholic beverage and make it even boozier. Read More

What We’re Drinking | March 17, 2017

March 17, 2017 |

It seems like I’m the only PorchDrinker who didn’t have an amazing week of craft beer enjoyment. Instead, I had to work lots of overtime because my coworkers were all pretending to be snowed-in in the aftermath of winter storm Stella. I’ve also managed to get sick again. It feels like my esophagus is being shredded with razor blades every time I swallow. This week I’m on the outside looking in as I bring you What We’re Drinking.

Beerstagram | March 9 – 16

March 17, 2017 |

Happy Friday, it’s time for Beerstagram! How’s everyone doing this week? Some of us still seem to be basking in that sunshine I mentioned last week and many others are still digging out from snow, welcome to it being (almost) spring. With St. Patrick’s Day upon us, how will you be celebrating? Dry Irish Stout, perhaps? Hopefully only your dessert will be green and not your beer. Either way I guess we will see what photos you snap. Sláinte!

March 17, 2017 |

Surly Brewing has established itself as a craft beer powerhouse in Minneapolis by making iconic beers like Surly Furious and Todd the Axeman. Beer & Book Club | Man Alive!

March 16, 2017 |

The second installment of the PorchDrinking’s Beer and Book Club will be a tad different from the first. Although, I’ve been in two book groups, and I’ve even started one, they don’t work for me. Turns out, I prefer a solitary read and perhaps an impromptu conversation that results from the surprise of realizing someone else also enjoys the same authors and books as me. My favorite reading spot is in an upstairs room at home with my two dogs, a comfortable chair and a beer fridge. Maybe I’ve stumbled on to the perfect book club.

I digress.

Brewery Showcase | Maxline Brewing

March 16, 2017 |

Featured photo provided by Maxline Brewing

Step inside Maxline Brewing and you’ll see a small tasting room lined with large, wooden community tables and expansive garage windows that open out to a patio in the south-facing sun. Inside the tasting room, three fermenters are in full view with chalkboard titles tantalizing guests with the beers to come. On this particularly sunny day, the patio is full and beers are flowing. Maxline staff, often called beertenders, weave seamlessly throughout the tasting room stopping to exchange pleasantries with customers, pet a dog or two (dogs are allowed on both patio and tasting room), and high five children on their way out. For this midtown location in Fort Collins, it’s as if “everybody knows your name.” Read More

Journey into the Woodlands

March 16, 2017 |

SweetWater Brewing Company has always pushed an image of nonconformity. Its latest venture, The Woodlands, is no different. Over the last 20 years, SweetWater has focused on growing its brand, and as founder Freddy Bensch explains “We have capacity under control, and can give more time to projects we’ve always aspired to do.” Bensch continued, pointing out, “We’re always challenging ourselves to evolve and master our craft.” The Woodlands is the physical manifestation of the brewery’s vision to push its practice and, as Bensch finished, “…make some really phenomenal beers.” So it was in this spirit of innovation and mastery that the Woodlands was born.
