Being a grinch has lost a little bit of its punch over the last couple of years. There’s so much to hate year-round that a good old-fashioned holiday hate-fest doesn’t seem super relevant. When you’ve got people screaming at flight attendants and beer workers, a representative government that doesn’t give a sh*t about the people it represents and the hottest new viral mutation running rampant, it seems trite to write a holiday hate piece.
And yet, here we are.
Here are six more reasons to absolutely hate the holidays this season, and six perfect beers to take the edge off while you find another stupid hiding spot for your Elf on a Shelf.
Odell Brewing Co. has always had a great beer lineup. Whether you are a fan of hoppy beers or more unique and/or aged beers, it seems as if Odell makes a beer that you’re bound to enjoy. Since Colorado has an abundance of fantastic breweries, it’s quite an accomplishment that Odell is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. To celebrate, they decided to pay tribute to their flagship beer from 30 years ago, 90 Shilling.
If you sip around the craft beer world today, you’ll find many new unique and tasty beers, such as hazy beer, pastry stouts, milkshake IPAs, sours, brut IPAs, etc. With all the recent/rapid evolutions in the craft beer industry, this got me to thinking, “What was the beer that first opened my eyes to all the glory that is craft beer?” It was Odell Brewing’s 90 Shilling amber ale, and this, my friends, is an ode to that particular beer or as I call it, my “gateway to craft.”
If you have attended the Barrel-Aged Beer Festival at LowDown Brewery in the past, you remember the laid back, line-free day of great rare beers. This year’s third annual event will be better than ever with more barrel aged beers, more breweries, and more time to drink them. LowDown will again host the event this weekend, January 13 and 14 with beers from 15 other breweries, including Black Project, River North, Funkwerks, Station 26, Lagunitas, Dry Dock, Odell, Ratio, Elevation, Left Hand, Platt Park, Banded Oak, Spangalang, Little Machine and Declaration.
To commemorate this year’s Great American Beer Festival, several breweries have already announced collaborative projects, however few tally as storied histories as Avery and Odell Brewing. Odell founded in 1989 and Avery, which launched in 1993, constitute two of the country’s earliest pioneers in the recent craft beer resurgence. Next week during craft beer’s largest stage, their mutual appreciation toward each other’s craft will manifest in the release of a collaboration beer unlike any other.
Netflix has become the new home for incredible original content spending six billion dollars for this year alone. As more people are ditching cable for the comfort of streaming, we expect to see shows that can do great things without corporate oversight. Last year, I talked about the best pairings with this company’s more publicly renowned shows, but this time we’ll point out the newer, more innovative series around!
SAVOR: An American Craft Beer & Food Experience is one of the most premier craft beer events on the East Coast. The Brewers Association, in partnership with the historic National Building Museum, brings forth this incredible event to give beer lovers a chance to meet brewers, find rare delicacies and experience unbelievable combinations that bring new meaning to taste and smell. In our long history of covering this event, PorchDrinking gave me the opportunity to savor a beer festival unlike any other.
It is very hard to type when there is a 16-month-old baby sitting on your arm. She is singing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” so the pros outweigh the cons. It’s only a matter of time,however, until pins-and-needles become a very real threat. Despite my impeded blood circulation, I managed to comb Twitter for a few morsels of beer news. What’s great about Odell Brewing Company (besides the fact that it has an employee stock ownership plan) is the brewery’s ability to produce high quality beer no matter the style or the size of production. From the Fort Collins brewery’s core line up, to one-off specialty taproom ales, to its Cellar Series barrel-aged beers, I always know that an Odell beer is going to deliver.
Over the past year or so, Chicago’s craft beer scene has continued to increase in both brewery openings and outside-the-state breweries entering the city. PorchDrinking.com, along with Bitter Pops, is hosting Newbies & Freshies on May 24 (an event that’s part of Chicago Craft Beer Week or #CCBW) to showcase all that’s new and exciting in the city.

This year’s event is bound to be twice as good; mainly because it’s twice as long with more than double the barrel aged beers. LowDown will again host the event at their brewery this weekend, January 21 and 22.
It’s that time of year again for Christmas Cookie and Beer Pairings! Our first edition of this pairing theme kicked off last year as you may remember, and I was very excited to bring it back for a second time this year. I was torn between sticking to all American brews for this year’s edition or if I should add some of those fantastic Belgian Christmas Ales in the mix, but then decided that this year’s version should be strictly All-American. There were definitely some great options for pairing. Also, just like last year, I did some homemade cookies and some store-bought for those of you that like to bake and for those of you that would prefer not to. Now let’s get on to the goods!
Two beer-centric establishments of Fort Collins, Mainline Ale House and Odell Brewing Company, joined forces last Friday night in bringing roughly forty attendees an unforgettable four course beer dinner. At the start of dinner, Mainline’s Executive Chef Justin Burdick really emphasized sourcing local ingredients (shout out to the Fort Collins Farmers Market) and fall-forward flavors. The Mainline kitchen did not disappoint in delivering four thoughtful, tasty pairings to accompany always-solid Odell beers. Moreover, after Chef Justin discussed each dish, Odell beer representative Alex Cousins presented the story, style, and flavors of the beers during each respective course. Overall, Mainline’s motto, “A passion for beer and food you can taste,” could not have been more evident over the course of this event!
After a 4 year hiatus Small Batch Festival returned to Fort Collins, and as the saying goes “it was just like riding a bicycle.” Entering the festival one fun perk that stood out was that bicycles were welcomed to a VIP parking in the main parking lot and those that drove had to park up top in the upper lot. Walking through the ticketing line was a breeze and the atmosphere as you entered the main bar was jovial.

It’s been more than two years since Odell Brewing Co. has released a new year-round beer. I assume that’s because the brewery prefers to achieve near-perfection with a beer before putting it in customers’ hands. Having just tried their newest release, Drumroll American Pale Ale, I’m 100% on board with that strategy.
Odell Brewing Company last hosted Small Batch Festival in 2012, and while the event was an amazing success, the brewery has been quite busy in the years since — They expanded their footprint (Iowa and Texas,) updated their seasonal lineup (Brombeere here, Double Pilsner gone,) released a handful of new bombers (such as Brazzle and Pina Agria,) created a seasonal variety pack (Montage,) and completed brewery construction. Having accomplished so much the past few years, Odell is ready to bring back the Small Batch Festival and hopes to make it an annual event. Adam D’Antonio from Odell said “production comes first and festivals second. We didn’t want to bring Small Batch back until we were ready and could do it right.”

Around this time of year, I usually start pining for Odell Brewing Company’s yearly offering of the Friek, a sour ale made with cherries and raspberries. However, Odell recently debuted another beer from their Cellar Series, the Piña Agria, and it’s all I want to drink right now.
