Some people plan their vacations around tropical beaches, ancient ruins or exotic cities. While all of the above are fantastic options, I decided to plan my vacation this year around hiking and beer. This led me to the shocking realization that despite living in Pennsylvania, I’ve never traveled further north than Boston. How could that be? Read More

Old Irving Brewing | Rat Pack

June 21, 2017 |

ABV: 7% | IBU: 20

Just like their namesake, the Rat Pack Belgian Dubbel is a classic and timeless beer made by Old Irving Brewing. When you close your eyes, each sip transports you to “simpler times” when 1960’s crooners dominated the radio, and you’re enjoying a classic cocktail in a fedora. The flavor profile is complex yet balanced for easy drinking. The warm alcohol flavor soothes the taste buds. The snifter-style glass mimics that of a cognac to top off your time travel. Read More

Modern Times Beer | Blazing World

June 20, 2017 |

ABV: 6.8% | IBU: 85

Seeing that the times are what they are, you know with politics, fake news, real news, climate change, brewery buy outs, you may think that Modern Time’s hoppy amber Blazing World was named after… modern times. Not exactly. “Yeah, we definitely never intended it to be that timely of a name,” said Modern Times communication coordinator Dan Reed.

Despite how depressingly timely the name may be, the “hoppy, dank, amber” is truly an uplifting beer. “The stickiest of the icky,” as Reed described. “It’s a luxuriously hoppy amber loaded up with intemperate quantities of Nelson, Mosaic and Simcoe hops, which are some of the fruitiest, dankest hops sweet, sweet money can buy,” Reed added. Saugatuck Brewing Company | Neapolitan Milk Stout

June 19, 2017 |

ABV: 6.0% | IBU: 37

I don’t like novelty beers. You know the ones I’m talking about – the cream soda, apple crisp, this-tastes-like-donut-holes kind of beers. Beers that have … Read More

Pisgah Brewing Company | Pisgah Pale Ale

June 16, 2017 |

When people think of the Asheville area with regards to craft beer, so many brewery names come to mind. Too many. Asking to list all of the awesome breweries leads down one hell of a rabbit hole, along with the famous special release beers from nearly all of them. What might not be so obvious to outsiders and even some locals is the answer to a question such as “What is the  ______ beer of Asheville?” If that blank space says Pale Ale, there is an easy answer to it: Pisgah Pale Ale.

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company | The Shape of Hops to Come

June 15, 2017 |

ABV: 8.5% | IBU: 98

The demand for juicy, Northeast-style IPAs has skyrocketed seemingly overnight. I am always looking to get my hands on these late-hopped brews whenever I see them on draft at a local watering hole. But you also have the traditional West Coast style beers, such as Pliny the Elder. And then, off the banks of the Delaware River, north of Philadelphia in the suburbs of Bucks County, lies a brewery making a DIPA rivaling those true to the West Coast style that’s also infused with characteristics of a Northeast IPA that everyone is loving these days — The Shape of Hops to Come.

Anchor Brewing | Blood Orange Blonde Ale

June 14, 2017 |

Anchor Brewing
is a brewery for which most ardent craft beer fans pay reverence, for if not for Fritz Maytag betting a good portion of his inheritance and defying all logic in the late 1960s, well, who knows? Maytag had a vision, and that vision has manifested itself in a terrific brewery that was integral in awakening a nation from its brewing doldrums. In 2017, the brewery isn’t sitting around resting on its laurels, demonstrated by the new Anchor Brewing Blood Orange Blonde Ale. How can something be both blonde and blood orange? Leave it to Anchor Brewing to solve this colorful conundrum.

June 13, 2017 |

ABV: 6.1% | IBU: 8
Last year, Dry Dock Brewing Company announced the launch of their Funk & Sour series, which features crowd-pleasing favorites from South Dock’s barrel-aging program. The series includes more than 80 barrels, which consist of mostly wine and some whiskey, and are dedicated to sour, Brett and mixed fermentations. I was able to get my hands on Batch No. 2, called Cassidae, a sour Brett saison that was bottled August 19, 2016.

Omaha Brewing Company | Hannahatchee Creek IPA

June 7, 2017 |

ABV: 6.6% | IBU: 53.3

Once upon a time, there was a dentist who lived in Omaha, Georgia. Much like a molar’s roots function to secure the tooth, Doctor Robert Lee’s familial roots kept him in Omaha. I will not apologize for the tooth analogy. Doc Lee, as he was known around town, wasn’t going anywhere, and he decided Omaha needed a bit of a boost.    Read More

Cruz Blanca | El Train

June 5, 2017 |

Everyone in Chicago has taken the elevated train (or “L” train) at one time or another. Most typically have some story or stories about an adventure they had on a ride. Cruz Blanca is trying to give you another probably less grotesque story to tell with their El Train IPA.

Saint Benjamin Brewing Company | Wit or Witout

June 2, 2017 |

ABV: 5.2% | IBU: 17

At some of Philadelphia’s more famous cheesesteak purveyors, you will get kicked to the end of the line if you don’t follow the ordering procedure. You better know if you want “one whiz wit” (a cheesesteak with cheese whiz and onions) or “one provolone witout” (a cheesesteak with provolone cheese, hold the onions). Neither the counter staff nor your fellow patrons will tolerate anyone who slows the line. As an homage to this time-honored procedure, the Philadelphia-based Saint Benjamin Brewing Company decided to call one of their beers “Wit or Witout.”

RJ Rockers Brewing Company | Bell Ringer

May 31, 2017 |

ABV: 8% | IBU: 48

My first beer from Spartanburg, South Carolina brewery RJ Rockers Brewing Company was their double pale ale, Bell Ringer. The first sip of a new (to me) brewery’s beer always sets the stage for how I’ll approach their other beers and, man, was I impressed! I will definitely be seeking out their other varieties now that I’ve tried this.

This is a great beer, and not just because I’m a Star Wars fan.

The creation of this beer was one of those happy accidents. When brewer Ryan Parker was home brewing, before Someplace Else Brewery even started, he made a wee mistake and diverged from the recipe. Read More

Beer Showcase | Stiegl Lemon Zitrone Radler

May 26, 2017 |

“In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,” but a few months before Columbus landed in the Caribbean, an Austrian brewery that came to be known as Stiegl arose in the town of Salzburg. Five and a quarter centuries later, the world has dramatically changed, but Stiegl is still there and still delivering beer in its hometown by horse and carriage. The one thing that is new is the Stiegl Zitrone Lemon Radler, its newest summer-friendly, highly sessionable U.S. import.

BrewDog | Paradox Rye Cask-Aged Imperial Stout

May 25, 2017 |

ABV: 15%

It’s not every day I see a 12 oz. can of beer sold with its own box. It reminds me of drinking a PBR tall boy out of a brown paper bag on NJ Transit. But, that’s Pabst and this is BrewDog Paradox Rye, a 15% ABV cask-aged beast of an imperial stout that, I suppose, gives it the right to be stored in a tiny cardboard container. Coming from the brewers of taxidermied squirrel fame, this could be regarded by many as nothing special, but as per the norm, I am a total sucker for clever beer marketing. Thus, this little box of madness pulled me right in.
