Newbies & Freshies CCBW Event Highlights New Breweries in Chicago

Over the past year or so, Chicago’s craft beer scene has continued to increase in both brewery openings and outside-the-state breweries entering the city. PorchDrinking.com, along with Bitter Pops, is hosting Newbies & Freshies on May 24 (an event that’s part of Chicago Craft Beer Week or #CCBW) to showcase all that’s new and exciting in the city.
Epic Brewing | Sour Brainless on Peaches Vertical #1 – #3

When Epic Brewing first released its Sour Brainless on Peaches in late June 2015, the brewery’s sour program was officially launched. I remember going to the first release at the Denver taproom, where I was able to hand-dip the wax on my bottles, enjoy free peach ice cream from Little Man with flame roasted peaches, and also get my first taste of Epic’s sour peach. In the two years since the initial release, Epic’s sour initiative has quickly matured into an innovative and well-respected program.
Growing List of National Breweries Rescind RSVP to Wicked Weed Funkatorium Invitational

It has been a rough twenty four hours for the craft beer industry, as droves of national brewers have begun voicing their responses to Wicked Weed Brewing’s acquisition by Anheuser-Busch InBev. The first and perhaps most high profile response came from Jester King Brewing’s Jeffrey Stuffings who shared a heartfelt, but definitive statement on the Austin brewery’s policy toward future collaborations and sales of Wicked Weed products.

After undergoing a re-branding, launching a series of new beers and hiring a new head brewer in Jeff Tyler, Spice Trade Brewing is now in search of a second production facility with plans to enter Denver’s competitive retail market.

When you think of Cinco de Mayo, what comes to mind? I think of margaritas, guacamole, lots of fajitas and, of course, cervezas! Capitalized on by the beer industry in the 1980’s, Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous with parties, fun, and lots of booze. So, in honor of this 5th of May, I decided to take my own spin on a cerveza with two variations of beer cocktails. Both pack a spicy kick, yet are refreshing and go down so easy! To create these cocktails, I decided to use a local Philadelphia brewery’s version of a Mexican-style lager, Manayunk Brewing Company’s El Rio.

Some people may claim that West Coast IPAs are dead, but not according to Drake’s Brewing Company. While it does offer a few hazy IPAs, Drake’s Brewing pumps out a heavy dose of bitter, West Coast brews during San Francisco Beer Week. Hop Heads rejoice each February when this San Leandro brewery unveils its Hopocalypse lineup — each year more bitter than the last. Jester King Brewery Founder Jeffery Stuffings shared his thoughts on today’s acquisition announcing that Jester King would no longer sell Wicked Weed products based on the principal that the world’s largest brewery conglomerate has actively pushed legislation to oppose the interest of Texas craft brewers. I have a hard time understanding why Brussels sprouts seem to be the most-hated vegetable in America. Yes, they are a bit stinky (and if you overcook them, it becomes a MAJOR stink bomb), but they are packed with so many nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, vitamin K, iron, folic acid, magnesium and fiber. They are also an extremely versatile vegetable to cook with and the variety of dishes one can create is extensive. I have made several Brussels sprout dishes, but never with beer and I have been missing out!

NEWS | Anheuser-Busch Acquires Wicked Weed Brewing

This morning, Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI), the world’s largest brewery conglomerate, announced the acquisition of Wicked Weed Brewing.
The Asheville, NC brewery began as a 15 barrel pub system in 2012, founded by brothers Walt and Luke Dickinson along with friends Ryan, Rick and Denise Guthy, Originally focused on West Coast style IPAs and Belgians, Wicked Weed quickly developed a reputation for wild, sour and experimental barrel-aged beers. This progression led to the opening of their Funkatorium sour beer taproom and barrel-aging facility in 2014, a second 50 barrel production facility in 2015, and most recently The Funk House and company headquarters which houses a custom designed brewhouse and training facility.
