You made it through the first full week of the year! Pat yourself on the back, or better yet, pour yourself a beer. I started off my first week paddle boarding and hanging out with friends at the sandbar, and I’m ending my week going to an infamous beer festival in Fort Lauderdale. This year has treated me well and I love highlighting the best moments in between grad school and work. We are all about that life-work balance at PorchDrinking, and we would love to share some fine beers to lead you in the right direction.
The Bruery | Weekday Stout Lineup

Exclusive…Brues? I love lists. With craft beer, it has never been any different. When I first started drinking craft, The Bruery’s Black Tuesday quickly came onto my radar. With its exclusive nature, only being available once a year on the final Tuesday in October, I made it a mission to get a hold of one. I quickly discovered that not only was there Black Tuesday, but The Bruery brewed arguably even more exclusive Stout releases for other days of the week, using Black Tuesday as the base beer and then adding different adjuncts to each other day. These other variants were available to Reserve Society Members only.
Drink Beer, Protect the SF Bay with Anchor Brewing | Baykeeper IPA

Is there a better way to kick off the new year with a new brew that makes a fierce impact on the environment? Probably not! Anchor Brewing Company is doing just that. They’re proud to release Baykeeper IPA, which is made in collaboration with a local non-profit. The San Francisco Baykeeper has been defending the Bay from pollution for 30 years; so, Anchor teamed up with them to create this bright and delicious IPA.
Firestone Walker Expands its National IPA Profile with Release of New Mind Haze IPA

“We’re finally ready do a hazy IPA the Firestone way.” Those were the words from Firestone Walker brewmaster Matt Brynildson in this week’s press release. While 2018 created the initial haze craze, 2019 represents the second wave of the trend, with more major players like California’s Firestone Walker Brewing Co. entering the fray with their new Mind Haze hazy IPA.

I think everyone can agree that January is the worst month of the year. For the entire first week, you’re nursing your holiday hangover. The second and third weeks you spend frantically trying to catch up on all the work you avoided during December. The last week, you fully realize how long it is until you get another holiday. I guess what I’m trying to say is that good beer is what will help you get through January.
Oskar Blues and Cigar City Announce First CANarchy Collab

With the passing of each new year, it’s natural for beer fans to wonder what new innovative beers are in store for the next 12-months. And now we’ve got the first big offering from two major industry names in Oskar Blues and Cigar City. It comes in the form of Bamburana, a collaborative beer between these two CANarchy Collective owned breweries. Not only does it mark the first widely released collaborative release within the CANarchy family, but it’s also the first nationally distributed collab beer for the two as well.

When most people hear the word Minnesota, I can imagine that a few stereotypes are top of mind. Some people might imagine a frigid Antarctic-like landscape. Others may have a vision of, Scandinavian men and women, blonde and blue-eyed, dressed in floor-length jackets and Vikings gear screaming skol. Thanks to the Coen brothers and their brilliant Fargo, some might immediately hear Francis McDormand’s spot-on accent in their ears and get a vision of an unfortunate woodchipper in their minds. Hear from the Experts: National Brewers Reflect on 2018 Year in Beer

Just like that, another year has come to close. And with this new year comes an excuse to reflect on the last twelve months. It’s a time to celebrate what we’ve learned, experienced and (at least in our case) drank, and a reason to set goals and resolutions for how we want the next year to be even better than the last.
Here at PorchDrinking, our first order of business for 2019 was to use the arrival of the new year to reach out to some of the best and brightest in craft beer. Bootlegger’s Brewery | Black Phoenix

Bootlegger’s Brewery sold their first keg of beer in 2008. It was originally located in Fullerton, California in a small industrial building in an area that was a little rough around the edges. The brewery felt closer to a neighbor’s garage than it did a commercial brewery. Since then, they upsized the brewhouse from a 7 to a 30 barrel system. They moved the main brewing operations to a larger industrial area while staying in Fullerton. They also open their third tasting room location in Costa Mesa to go along with the Fullerton and Redlands locations. Read More
The Longer the Government Shutdown Goes On, the Bigger Problem it Becomes for Craft Brewers

The government shutdown is now in its third week due to the debate over a border wall and has resulted in noted consequences for federal workers, government entities and general governmental functions. While many are more pressing, perhaps the one many craft beer fans should keep an eye on is how it impacts the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB).
One of TTB’s functions is approving new beer labels, licenses and ingredients that are vital to the continued business of any craft brewer, winery or distiller. As long as the government keeps its doors shut, the TTB does too, which means any meaningful innovation or initiative from craft brewers come to a grinding halt as the government body will not “review or approve any new submissions” during the shutdown. Here are some of the major implications if the government decides to extend the shutdown further.

Adroit Theory’s Dawn of a Dark Day | Five Year Anniversary Pour List

I was first made aware of Adroit Theory in August while I was at the Virginia Craft Brewers Fest in Charlottesville, VA. Their BLVCK Celebration, an imperial porter with Oreo cookies, honey, caramel and toasted coconut blew me completely away, and I’ve had my hoppy eyes on their beer ever since.
Five months later, I’ve been able to get my hands on the Death of Cthulu, a Russian imperial stout, as well as the EBK and I. Adam–both delicious, hazy imperial IPAs.
