Cantillon has been the standard-bearer for the Gueuze and Lambic styles since 1900–before the Theodore Roosevelt administration. In fact, search their brewery on Google Maps and you’ll find it labeled as “Musée Bruxellois de la Gueuze” and to this day each bottle is a seminal exhibit for sour lovers. A bottle of Cantillon is a DeLorean trip back in time and it’s the commitment to preserving the old ways that ensures the quality today. Ultimate 6er | Beer Pairings with Advent

This isn’t your typical Ultimate 6er – we’re getting theological here. Most people think of Advent calendars when they think about pairing beers with Advent. We’re taking a different bent on the term and pairing six beers with the four weeks of Advent in a different way.
Advent begins on November 28 this year, and starts with the “First Sunday of Advent,” continuing with the season of Advent until Christmas Day on December 25. There are always four Sundays in Advent and each week has a different theme according to the Lectionary (readings for a worship service) that is followed most commonly by Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran denominations of Christianity (though some Presbyterian and Methodist churches do, too). We’ll focus on the Episcopal collects (pronounced COL-lects instead of the typical way), or prayers, of the weeks of Advent because you’ve got an Episcopalian here and as the saying goes, “where three or four Episcopalians are gathered, there’s bound to be a fifth!”

A chorus of cheers drowned out the announcement, but the result was clear as the Kansas City Bier Co. logo appeared on the screen. Winterbock, their Dark Doppelbock lager, had won a silver medal. A longtime fan favorite, the bier had gained international recognition – a huge achievement for the Kansas City, Missouri, brewery.

Week 10 of the NFL season was a wild ride, to say the least. The craziness started with the Thursday night upset of the Baltimore Ravens losing to the Miami Dolphins by double-digits. Sunday games kept the momentum going when Cam Newton made his Carolina return and secured a 34-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals. The winless Lions tied the Pittsburgh Steelers -somehow- and the Green Bay Packers held Russell Wilson scoreless for the first time in his NFL career. Louisville Beer Week, held Oct. 22 through Oct. 29, celebrated all things Louisville beer. One event stood out from the rest, the Women in Beer panel. On Wednesday, Oct. 27, five women took the stage at Logan Street Market to discuss the challenges and triumphs of working in the beer industry.

Hops & Bacteria | How Brewers Use the Antibacterial Properties of Hops

“It’s been known for a long time the addition of hops will control the growth of bacteria in beer,” says Matt McCarroll, professor of chemistry and biochemistry and director of the Fermentation Science Institute at Southern Illinois University. While these antibacterial qualities aren’t usually needed in modern brewing, the rise in popularity of mixed-fermentation beers has reawakened interest in this poorly understood property of hops.
City Built Brewing | Prague Underground Czech Pilsner

We were recently able to try a Czech Pilsner from City Built Brewing out of Grand Rapids, MI called Prague Underground. We think this beer is brewed true to style and well worth trying out if you enjoy great tasting beer.
The Pilsner is a Lager beer that was originally brewed in 1842 by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll in the town of Pilsen in Bohemia which is now the Czech Republic. Legend has it that beer was brewed in this part of the country as far back as 1307, but the quality of the beer brewed up until the late 1800’s was so inconsistent the locals had dumped barrels of beer to show their disgust! They brought in Josef Groll to implement a new style of beer that focused on local ingredients and paler malts, and as the old saying goes “the rest is history”.
