Valentine’s Day has its chocolate hearts and Easter its chocolate eggs, but chocolate beer can be enjoyed all year. And why not? Chocolate and cocoa are more than additions to dessert, they a delectable ingredients that enhance a multitude of savory dishes such as mole sauce, chili, barbecue and ravioli. Granted, chocolate beers tend to lean to the sweet side, but has anyone ever had a chocolate shake in the summer? Chocolate exists as a diverse, adaptable and downright delicious ingredient, and brewers have mastered its integration into beer. Here are six noteworthy examples of chocolate-infused beer (even if it’s been a while since the release date, the beers can be found on shelves, or in your beer buddy’s cellar).
It’s been another fun week on Beer Twitter! There has been so much going on that a bunch of things probably slipped past my net. Either way, I’ve got a fun collection of stuff for you in this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz, so make sure your boss isn’t around, crack open a beer and start scrolling!
Stone Brewing is never one to shy away from hop forward beers, they along with the likes of Sierra Nevada helped pioneer the West-Coast style. And in 2018, Stone will continue to push the needle on hops with a slew of dank, juicy, and floral focused beers.
Between all the Oktoberfest celebrations, beer festivals and Zwanze day, there were dozens of events this week, and there are even more coming next week. Have you heard about this GABF thing? Apparently it’s starting to get pretty big! I also found a few job listings, photos from hop harvest and more than one made up holiday. Strap in, dear readers. This is The Weekly Buzz.
It’s been another long, hot week. Not only that, but it was a busy week in the world of craft beer. GABF tickets went on sale, we celebrated National IPA Day and one of this country’s oldest craft breweries was bought by Sapporo. As the weekend creeps towards us, we all need to sit back, take a deep breath and enjoy a delicious beer. While you do that, feel free to peruse this week’s edition of The Weekly Buzz.
Father’s Day is right around the corner. I always enjoyed celebrating my dad on this great summer day but for the first time the tables are turning. My wife and I are expecting our first baby late this summer and after this year Father’s Day will certainly have a completely different meaning to me. As such this year is my last time not being part of the fathers’ club. So cheers to all of your special fathers in your life and honor them with the following six beers!
No matter what your views on climate change are, there is no denying that spring is arriving ridiculously early in many parts of the country. Perhaps it was brought on by the unseasonable warm weather, but the PorchDrinkers enjoyed quite a few IPAs this week. That wasn’t all we drank, though! There were sours for fun, flights for variety and a little something special at the end. If you spent your whole week at work (or laid up with back pain like me), prepare to live vicariously through us. This is What We’re Drinking.

Where There’s Smoke, There’s Beer, another great Barley’s Angels event, went off with a bang last Monday offering up some smoky treats at Links Taproom in Wicker Park. Barley’s Angels, a women’s craft beer appreciation and educational group, sure does know how to pick their taprooms. You would think that with 36 beers on tap, deciding which beer to choose would be a nightmare – but the Links staff is more than happy to discuss your likes and dislikes and recommend the perfect beer. On every wall you can see digital boards displaying the wide variety beers currently on tap and how much of the keg is left. This allows patrons to choose their beers wisely because once a keg is spent, a new brew is on.

I have become something of a fresh IPA snob. With so many amazing hoppy ales to choose from these days, once you’ve tasted a super fresh IPA, it becomes difficult to stomach a dust-covered bottle that says India Pale Ale, but doesn’t include a bottled on date. Have you had a Stone Ruination bottled the same month you bought it? WOW. The difference is palpable.
Under normal circumstances, i.e.: Living in America, this is typically a non-issue – as many of the best beers have date codes. But moving to Switzerland, which is outrageous, and not living in a major city means access to true American-style IPAs have become limited. Cue the violin and tears.

I couldn’t let Northern California have all the fun. Check out my California Summer Sixer list with the best of what Southern California breweries have to offer this summer season. All beers listed are currently available with an ABV of 5.5% or lower. The average ABV for this sixer is also 4.7% – perfect planning, if we say so ourselves.
There’s a lot going on this week friends. Of course, it’s Shark Week! Olympic trials in swimming, track and field and gymnastics have started. And my favorite holiday is less than a week away. That’s right, Independence Day is my favorite holiday! I look forward to it each and every year. To me, the Fourth of July signifies everything that makes summer amazing. Yes, it’s a day to celebrate our Independence and the birth of Democracy. But it’s also a day to soak up those special moments spent with friends and family into the wee hours of the evening, enjoying cold brew after cold brew as you kick back, relax and take in all that is summertime. (The Fourth of July also kicks off what I call my “birthday week” which culminates on 7-11. Gifts of craft beer are always appreciated! )
