Why I Stopped Rating Beers on Untappd
March 1, 2017 | Dan Bortz 27As a beer nerd and a smartphone addict, I absolutely love the fact that there is an app that caters to my vices. I log my beers religiously, often adding locations and photos. The ability to look back at beers I’ve consumed can be helpful because sometimes I simply can’t remember if I’ve had a beer before. There is, however, one feature that I no longer use. I don’t rate beers on Untappd anymore. Read More
The Bruery to Release Chocolate Rain to the Public
March 1, 2017 | Chea FranzFeatured photo contributed by The Bruery
The Bruery’s forecast calls for a 100% chance of rain… Chocolate Rain that is, and we couldn’t be more excited. What began as a single cask of beer that was released in 2009 for a Black Tuesday release event has since become a, wait for it, legendary brew that members of The Bruery’s exclusive beer societies have enjoyed. But for the first time on March 24, Chocolate Rain will be pouring for all. Read More

Pour List | 15th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Fest
February 28, 2017 | Tristan ChanOver the past 15 years, Avery Brewing Company has practically written the book on brewery-run niche festivals. Dating back to their original location in the humble alley of Arapahoe Ave, and now spanning three bar stations and an outdoor tent lineup in their two year old $30 million facility in Gunbarrel, Avery has mastered the art of attracting rare beers from top tier breweries, as well as showcasing their own oft unseen or hard to acquire wonders at such events.
SweetWater Brewing Co. | Through the Brambles
February 28, 2017 | Mark ElliotSweetWater Brewing Company and Southeast beer drinking basically go hand in hand. Since 1997, SweetWater has been pumping out their signature 420 Extra Pale Ales and really helped start and shape beer culture in the Atlanta metro area. As craft brew consumption and taste has continued to grow, SweetWater’s beer profile has grown right along with it. Whether lining up for Anniversary Series beers or longing for Dank Tank beers of the past, SweetWater grew a beer following by pushing flavors and higher alcohol content long before this was the “mainstream.”
Ultimate 6er | Fat Tuesday VooDoo Edition
February 27, 2017 | Mathew PowersFeature Image: From Sheffield’s Beer and Wine Garden, Chicago
For Roman Catholics, Ash Wednesday and Lent are right around the corner, which means Tuesday is the last day to indulge. For everyone else, Fat Tuesday is an excuse to experience new heights of debauchery, notably if you find yourself in New Orleans with all sorts of beads and cash. Indeed, the carefree nature found in New Orleans is the result of centuries of cultural homogenization. Yes, like a societal jambalaya, there’s a true mixing of cultures from almost every continent. It gave birth to modern hot jazz, and it found a way to mix all sorts of spirituality, including a wide acceptance of Voodoo. So, on this Fat Tuesday, let us celebrate the beer that celebrates the spirits that guide people through one last day of no-rules-fun — welcome to the Voodoo beer sixer!
River North Releases Cans of Colorado IPA & Pils
February 27, 2017 | Cory PelcThe blokes at River North Brewery (Denver, CO) have added two new beers to its can lineup, Colorado IPA and Pils. Joining perennial favorites River North White and FarmHouse, these new additions are the perfect complement to the brewery’s lineup of #AdventureFuel canned exclusively for Colorado beer lovers. This is big news for a brewery that has recently moved to a new location that allows them to brew beers they have wanted to for a while. Although this is a branching out from their Belgian influences, they are quick to note that they are not retiring any of their longstanding beers.
Brewers Discuss The Pros and Cons of Cellaring
February 27, 2017 | Mathew PowersLike book lovers with towering bookshelves full of the classics, or hunters with heads o’ plenty adorning their walls, some beer nerds maintain extensive bottle collections. Indeed, aficionados of fermented malt and hops often engage in the art of cellaring beer. But not all of them agree with the idea of saving beer for later.

Silver City Brewery | Tropic Haze IPA
February 27, 2017 | Hannah CarlsonPhoto by Silver City Brewery
Well folks, Silver City Brewery has done it again. After a busy 2016 celebrating their 20th anniversary, the Bremerton-based brewery isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, instead releasing a new year-round beer onto the market: The Tropic Haze IPA. This juicy brew hits it out of the park – playing into the “haze craze” that is sweeping the nation while also maintaining an element of mystery and allure for the drinker due to a certain, classified ingredient.
What We’re Drinking | February 24, 2017
February 24, 2017 | Danele BovaThis week we celebrated Drink it Now Day, a holiday started by Allagash Brewing that encourages craft beer fans to choose something from their cellars to enjoy now, instead of waiting. But let’s be honest, we celebrate that every day here at PorchDrinking. This is What We’re Drinking.
Monday Night Brewing | Slap Fight
February 24, 2017 | Sarah DuffyABV: 5.8% | IBU: 58
“Present this beer to a friend. If he does not drink it immediately, slap him as hard as you can. Repeat,” reads the description for Monday Night Brewing’s Slap Fight. Frankly, I couldn’t agree more.
Brewery Showcase | Nevin’s Draft Company
February 23, 2017 | Mathew PowersNevin’s Brewing Company (NBC), located in Chicago’s suburban Plainfield, is a restaurant, banquet hall, music venue and a brewery — and now that brewery has its own name, Nevin’s Draft Company. The “B” in NBC, occasionally got lost in the mix, so the brewing arm of NBC created a new, separate identity. The beer has always been good, but now more people are going to know about it.
Southern Tier Brewing Co. | Nu Skool IPA
February 23, 2017 | Mike ZollerABV: 6% | IBU: 55
As fruitier and juicier IPAs crowd the market, the debate has ensued as to whether this is the best route for the beer style. Personally, I think both can coincide, and I hope that we continue to see the classic more bitter IPAs, as well as the NE-style IPAs, flourish. One excellent example of a fruity (but not over the top) IPA is Nu Skool IPA from Southern Tier Brewing Company.
BREAKING | TRVE Brewing to Launch Colorado Distribution of Burial Beer & The Commons
February 22, 2017 | Tristan ChanAmerican craft beer has always been an industry that has thrived off strong relationships and mutual respect. That sense of camaraderie and support of fellow industry talents has led to today’s news that beginning in March, Denver’s TRVE Brewing will begin limited distribution of Burial Beer Co. out of Asheville, North Carolina and The Commons Brewery out of Portland, Oregon.

On February 18, the temperature soared to 70 degrees as beer fans flocked to the Guild’s Winter Wonderland of Beer Festival (#ILWinterFest).
