The Ultimate 6er
PD’s staff helps you pick the perfect six pack for all seasons, moods, and social situations.
No matter the season, taking a trip up to the mountains is a good time. Over the winter, you can grab your skis/snowboard and head up for a couple days of riding (or just cozy up indoors and enjoy the gorgeous scenery) and take a dip in the hot springs that the mountains have to offer. Over the summer, you can camp, hike, and enjoy so many various outdoor activities. Whatever the reason may be that brings you to the mountains, there’s one activity that you can enjoy across the board: visiting breweries! We’ve rounded up this Ultimate 6er of Colorado mountain town breweries that you can’t miss!
Fat Tuesday is right around the corner so it is time for the Ultimate 6er of Mardi Gras beers! Mardi Gras is a celebration that is dear to my heart after living in New Orleans for five years, so I am very excited to share my Mardi Gras beer recommendations with you!
These 6 beers are perfect for parade season. Whether you’re celebrating in New Orleans, Mobile, or on your couch, crack one of these and you’re ready to catch some beads.
Barrel-aged stouts dominate the Fall and Winter release calendars of many breweries as beer drinkers pine for a hearty, boozy beer that they can settle down with when the temperature drops. One of the familiar additions to these barrel-aged beers is coffee. It can add body, big flavors and huge aromatics that round out the barrel qualities and mellow the ABV burn. While I’m a huge fan of coffee in my boozy stouts, I get equally excited by breweries that look to collaborate with their community coffee purveyor or lighter offerings like lagers, cream ales, and simple stouts. Here are six recent coffee beer releases that fit that billing.
We’ve watched their love stories unfold in front of our TV sets. Some make us wistfully sigh when they embrace, while others have us scratching our heads at their dysfunctional behavior. Good or bad, these couples prove that relentless love prevails. This Valentine’s Day we’ve rounded up some of our favorite TV couples — and the best beers to pair them with.
The 92nd Academy Awards represents some major changes going on in the world of Hollywood. From the first South Korean movie nominated to Best Picture to streaming services fighting against classic studios; we can’t keep our attention away from the prestigious awards ceremony. Yet people always ask the same question every year: Do the Oscars matter in the grand scheme of things?
My answer is always yes. Even if something you don’t like wins, the goal is to expose others to new cinema and respect the work done by so many unsung heroes in the industry. After all, these are values you learn in the craft beer world when trying new styles or finding out how beer is made. So I’ve cobbled together the best six beers to have with the nine Best Picture Nominees.
Super Bowl Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year. My friends and I gather for an evening of celebration and friendly competition: the annual Dip Party. The football plays on mute for any plus ones who care about sports, and the game is only un-muted for the half-time show. Everyone attending brings a homemade dip and dunker, with first, second, and third place prizes based on a popular vote.
From sweet to savory, nostalgic classics to fresh takes, the party is all about the dip — a quintessential snack at any gathering. And as dip is the perfect party food, beer is an obvious beverage choice. This is especially true on Super Bowl Sunday when the industry is inundated with heightened awareness for beer’s biggest players. Whether enjoying a small spread or hosting a dip feast of your own, below are fail-safe beer pairings for some classic party dips.
Want to travel? “Traveling more” is a resolution for 25% of Americans for 2020. It’s not surprising, as travel is generally very fun and occasionally life-changing. Now is the time to look past some of your other, less-worthy resolutions (see you in 2021 eating healthy and saving money!) and commit to being Dora the Beer Explorer in 2020.
From the gritty streets of Gotham to the alien world of Krypton, we decided to take a look at what the DC Comic Universe’s most renowned heroes and villains would drink after a long day (or night) of crime-fighting and chaos creating.
The main set of DC Comics characters that come to mind in a Family Feud kind of way include Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman (The Dark Knight), Bane, The Joker and his chosen Gotham City siren, Harley Quinn. Each one of these deep, complex and foreboding characters loves a good solid IPA like Eliot from Ex Novo Brewing in Portland: clean, crisp and always solid with its hop-forward citrus, resinous and dank flavors.
I write this next sentence sincerely: Weezer is one of the most divisive bands of our lifetimes. Two prevailing opinions dominate the discussion and show what kind of Weezer fan you are: the early stuff is the best, or Weezer is just hitting their stride. Whatever side you’re on, here is the definitive guide to what you should drink when enjoying Weezer.
‘Tis season to be jolly, but don’t ignore the gluten-free folks! Finding the perfect beer gift for the gluten-free person in your life isn’t as daunting as it seems. Here’s a list of truly gluten-free beers available across the country, brewed with naturally gluten-free malted ingredients such as corn, quinoa, buckwheat, and sorghum.
With the Star Wars Saga coming to a close this December, a re-watch of all eight Skywalker films— plus the two spin off movies—seems like the only reasonable way to kick off the finale (at least for this nerd it DEFINITELY is). While watching the 20+ hours of force-filled, wipe-transitioned, Lucas-inspired action you may well be inclined to drink a beer (or six).
If you’ve got a bad feeling about this, or you just don’t have time to watch all those movies before the Episode IX, then try starting with the original film, Episode IV: A New Hope. This is a great jumping off point—after all, it’s where this whole story started. Avoid the who-shot-first argument (it was Han, people, it just was) by assembling the best six pack to share with your friends while you watch the lamest lightsaber fight in Star Wars history. These beers are not only representative of the characters, but ones that each person might enjoy drinking after a long day of space travel and saving the galaxy.
It started with a question: “Would anyone be interested in finding six beers to pair with Taco Bell favorites?”
My answer: Live Mas!
Now, normally my T-Bell eating is done after a night of beers, not as part of the very professional and high-class pairing you will see below. But, who am I kidding? I’d eat Taco Bell any day, any time.
So we bring you the best six beers to pair with six delicious Taco Bell treats.
While searching the aisles of my local beer store, I thought about what types of beers do people want to hear about? Stout season is coming, and so is porters, browns and the big guns like barleywines and barrel-aged everything. But, not everyone likes those types of beers. So what are some easy drinkers that many people will enjoy but don’t see this time of year? The selection of sours I tried was on point, and I quickly realized how many interesting smaller sours are not that tart, but people will set it aside for the simple reason of what section it is. So here’s a list of delicious brews that only have a little acidic bite, but pack a great amount of flavor!
Is there any movie more quintessentially Halloween than the 1993 classic Hocus Pocus? I’ve been watching it annually since I was a kid, but it’s even better now, because now I can drink beer at the same time. So let’s cuddle up with our talking cat, light that Black Flame Candle, and get to it: here are six beers to pair with the bewitching characters from the spooky film Hocus Pocus.
The Great American Beer Fest is an awe-inspiring menagerie of beer. Good beer, weird beers, surprising styles, and not nearly enough time to give them all a thoughtful pause. It can be overwhelming to know where to start, so we over at PorchDrinking have several different routes that we have planned out to make it easier for those who love specific styles. There isn’t really a wrong way to do GABF (except not drinking water, please drink water) so here is a way to dive in that is more musically inclined.
The opening night event for the Texas Craft Brewers Festival on September 28, Partners in Craft, is in its third year and has quickly become a favorite among festival-goers. This unique event focuses on the spirit of collaboration among Texas breweries and their community in an intimate setting featuring an equally unique line up of beers, food, live music, specialty vendors curated by the Austin Flea, and a glimpse into beer history courtesy of the popular Beer Museum pop-up. Tickets for this event are almost sold out, so get yours today.
In some places in the country such as Southern California where I’m from, the weather can vary from day to day during this time of year. Some days you want to combat the sweltering heat with nice light or refreshing beer. Other days it’s becoming that nice fall season weather where you want to start drinking those darker and heavier beers. Here’s a list of beers to help you take on the week during the transition from summer to fall!
I’ll never forget waiting in the drive-thru lane of a White Castle at 12:45 a.m. after immediately seeing Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. It wasn’t my first time, but it was my most memorable time eating those delicious little sliders with onions that really do pop with flavor.
Another DC Beer Week is upon us, taking place in the nation’s Capital from September 8-15, 2019. This annual event, hosted by the DC Brewers’ Guild, continues to grow in size each year, both in the number of breweries and in the events taking taking place across the district. With 11 breweries now open inside the city limits and dozens more within the metro area, the Washington, DC beer scene is rapidly becoming another craft beer hub along the East Coast.
To celebrate the 11th Annual DC Beer Week, we’ve put together six of the top beers being produced by DC breweries right now. Our list only includes breweries inside Washington, DC proper (sorry Virginia and Maryland).
Now that the last NFL pre-season game is in the books, it’s time to get serious. Week one starts this week, and it’s game on! The Packers take on the Bears for Thursday Night Football and wraps up with the Broncos playing the Raiders on Monday. Needless to say, the lineup in between will be awesome! As you’re completing your Fantasy Football drafts or simply reaching for a nice, cold craft beer to sip on as you’re cheering on your favorite team, here’s a few beers that will go great with the games as week one is set to begin.
