The names of the days of the week have similar origins in Spanish and English — they’re named after Roman/Greek/Norse gods, for the most part. But Saturday is different. Saturday in English is named after Saturn (Roman god of agriculture), whereas Saturday, in Spanish, (Sábado), gets its origins from “sabbath” (or “shavat”) meaning “to rest.” We usually think of Sunday as the day of rest. But if you’ve ever wondered why we consider Sunday the first day of the calendar week, now you know: Rest happens on the seventh day of the week, which is technically Saturday. Etymology is fascinating. So party it up tonight and rest tomorrow.
We’re also in the month of October — from the latin “octo” for eight. The eighth month. Except really it’s the 10th month, and nobody bothered to change it when we transitioned to the 12-month calendar circa 700 B.C. I feel that; I don’t change my clocks for daylight savings time. They’ll be right again in six months, so why bother. None of this has much to do with beer, but our brains could all use a break from politics. Anyway, it’s Friday, you’re done with the work week, and it’s time to crack open a few beers. Here’s What We’re Drinking this week.
So school has started and it’s supposed to be sorta the beginning of fall. I don’t know where you are right now, but where I’m sitting we are about to hit a record consecutive days with 100-degree heat. It’s really, really hot. So what goes well with the insanely ridiculous heat? Air conditioning and a great craft beer. Stone Brewing is turning 23! To celebrate, Stone is hosting the Stone Brewing 23rd Anniversary Grand Celebration this weekend! The event will be held on Sunday, August 18 from 3-6 p.m. More than 50 breweries will be pouring (including Stone, of course). Along with the complimentary tasting glass and a new pour list, there will be food, music and an amazing new venue. Here’s everything you need to know!
Summer is in full swing and for me so far, the highlight has been the Women’s World Cup games. I’ve been on the edge of my seat watching some of the most talented women in the world compete in the quadrennial matches, always with a craft beer in hand. My wife and I recently reached our milestone of traveling to all 50 states, ensuring we visit the local brewery in each of the places that we visit. While I am an avid meat eater, my wife is vegetarian. So, the places we choose to eat during our travels had to be well researched in advance to ensure they have a vegetarian menu that met the expectations of my wife, who can be quite a picky eater. Luckily, nowadays, that isn’t hard. Many breweries and brewpubs offer at least one vegetarian option on their menu, to various degrees of success and creativity.

I think everyone can agree that January is the worst month of the year. For the entire first week, you’re nursing your holiday hangover. The second and third weeks you spend frantically trying to catch up on all the work you avoided during December. The last week, you fully realize how long it is until you get another holiday. I guess what I’m trying to say is that good beer is what will help you get through January.
It is so hot in my house that I want to purchase a walk-in freezer to live inside. The worst part of this summer hasn’t even been the heat. The rain has been far more oppressive in the Northeast. In the last two weeks, I have pumped more water out of my basement than I did in the two years prior. It’s insanity. Good thing Climate Change is a hoax, or we’d really be screwed! Anyhoo… I found some beer stuff on social media, so I copied and pasted it for you to read. Welcome to The Weekly Buzz.
Since we’re all gathered here around the Weekly Buzz hearth, allow Grandpappy Dan to spin a yarn about the good old days. A long time ago, fall seasonal beers — like pumpkin ales — used to be released in the fall, so that their warm spiciness and pumpkin sweetness could be enjoyed on cool autumn nights. Märzens (or Oktoberfests) would be released in September to coincide with Munich’s historic Oktoberfest festival, which runs from late September until early October. Much like the way certain big box chains stock bathing suits in February, these beers are releasing earlier and earlier. Does anyone really want to drink a Pumpkin Ale in July or August? I don’t believe that they do. Seasonality is a beautiful thing, but it is being lost as its lines are being blurred. If you don’t buy fall seasonals in August, they’ll stop releasing them in August.

Are you tired of hearing me complain about my job? Well, you’re in luck! My ridiculously long work weeks are coming to an end soon, and I couldn’t be happier. How does my employer expect me to waste time on Twitter while working a 70-hour week? Joke’s on them! I do it on the clock. This week has been an absolute nightmare. I have been working ridiculous hours at my day job, and the cell service in my office isn’t even good enough to load Twitter. It’s been a busy week. I’m working 20 hours of overtime this week, but that’s not even what I’m talking about. Beer festival season is upon us, and the task of sorting through thousands of festival-related tweets and ‘grams has fallen to me. I’m totally stoked for Memorial Day weekend. I don’t have to work, which in itself is a rarity, and I also used two vacation days to finagle an entire week off. But let’s not forget the reason that we don’t have to work on Monday. Use every sip of beer as an opportunity to toast those who have fallen in service to our country.
