Federation of Malted Republics | A New Hop: Hopi-Wan Galactic Ale
February 2, 2017 | Niel StenderABV: 4.5%
Two years ago, I heard a shocking story. My brother’s then-girlfriend had never seen the original Star Wars.
No joke.
It seems impossible that one could grow up in America and not see these epic films. I’m not even close to a full blown Star Wars nerd, but I still love those three original films from the ’70s and I am always stoked when a new one comes out. (Well, not the Jar Jar Binks one; that sucked.) I have yet to see Rogue One, but when I saw this bottle of A New Hop: Hopi Wan Galactic Ale from Federation of Malted Republics (FMR), there was no choice but to buy it.

January 31, 2017 | Sarah DuffyABV: 6.5% | IBU: 55
For me, porch drinking and beer are synonymous with family. My favorite beer of ALL time happens to be Three Taverns Brewery White Hops, which was introduced to me by my brother. For many of us, beer is deeply rooted in the emotion and stories associated with it, which is why I’m so drawn to Three Taverns White Hops.

Eating & Drinking | Narrow Gauge Brewing Company
January 30, 2017 | Jordan PalmerIf there is one thing in the world of craft beer that is consistent, it is that every brewery has a unique story worth telling. The story of one of St. Louis’ newest breweries, Narrow Gauge, begins 136 years ago. Back in 1878 when railroads ruled the land, rails known as “narrow gauge” were built to minimize construction costs. In that year, the St. Louis and Suburban Railway opened as a narrow gauge steam railroad from the city to Florissant and was called the West End Narrow Gauge Railroad. Today, Florissant based Narrow Gauge Brewing Company pays tribute to this history and the city they call home. Read More
Battle of the Beer Belly | Craft Beer Vs. Fitness
January 30, 2017 | Dan Bortz 3On January 9, I stepped onto a scale for the first time in three months. The number that blinked back at me was a shock: 309.7lbs. I knew it was going to be bad. My size 36 jeans were too small to squeeze into, and I had been feeling pretty run down. For my sake and my family’s, this beer belly has to go.
The path to this sorry state was pretty obvious. As someone who has struggled with my weight for my entire adult life, I knew the signs. It all starts with an event (or series of events), which causes me to lose focus on my diet. This time, the catalyst was the loss of two extended family members in close succession. Once my dietary discipline is compromised, it is usually only a matter of time until workouts fall by the wayside. It all snowballs from there.

January 30, 2017 | Tristan Chan 2Colorado has been the beneficiary of receiving both limited or, in some cases, wide distribution of nationally acclaimed cult following beers over the years, from Pliny the Elder, to Abraxas, Hill Farmstead’s Dorothy to Goose Island’s BCBS variants.
Hi-Wire Brewing | Ringmaster’s Reserve Series – Raspberry Wheat Wine
January 30, 2017 | Christopher HilliardABV: 13.0% | IBU: 40
I just enjoyed the strongest beer I’ve ever had. Coming from one who actively seeks out high gravity beer, I feel like that’s something of an accomplishment. Even more so considering it’s from North Carolina, a state where the statutory limit of alcohol in beer is 15.0%. And while I don’t see much point in setting a legal limit at all, it’s very much preferable to the previous limit of 6.0% (I mean, really?). Thankfully this was lifted in 2005 when former NC governor Mike Easley signed NC HB 392 into law. I feel safe speaking for beer aficionados across the state when I say, “Thanks, Mike.”
Georgia Beer Day Events | January 28, 2017
January 28, 2017 | Josh RitenourWhile small and independent craft breweries across the nation strive to compete with big beer for shelf space and tap handle placement, there’s another prominent movement happening in the South. More specifically, in the one remaining state that still prohibits the on-site purchase of beer at breweries: Georgia, ooh Georgia.
However, thanks to the unshakable determination of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, a bill now exists in the state Senate to modernize Georgia’s ridiculous beer laws once and for all.
What We’re Drinking | January 27, 2017
January 27, 2017 | Danele Bova“Studies that we’re aware of show that 63% of craft beer drinkers yearn for the days when Big Beer was great. The craft beer “revolution” is nothing more than a conspiracy to devalue the quality product that our fine American brewers have been creating for decades.” — #AlternativeFacts
These, however, are not Alternative Facts. This is What We’re Drinking this week.

Graeter’s Ice Cream Beer is Coming!
January 27, 2017 | Drew TrollerWhen I moved away from Cincinnati, my favorite homesickness remedy was a pint of Graeter’s black raspberry chip ice cream. Growing up, Graeter’s ice cream was quintessential Cincinnati fare; finding out it was available in my grocer’s freezer section was cause for celebration.
