Official Beer of Seattle Beer Week: Aslan Brewing Co. | Washington Gold Pils
May 8, 2019 | Katelyn PelakSeattlites have tolerated a lot of Mother Nature this year. We endured the snowiest February ever recorded followed by the hottest winter day ever recorded. Then April gave us the longest rain streak we’ve ever seen. Thankfully, the month of May is here to bring us relief in the form of Seattle Beer Week! The event, now in its eleventh year, was created to celebrate and showcase the close, collaborative beer community of the Northwest. This year’s Seattle Beer Week runs from May 9-19 and features hundreds of events across the city of Seattle and beyond, including camel visits, Battle of the Beer Bands, and dozens of beer dinners and tasting events. Sonder Brewing | Kato Coffee Kolsch
May 7, 2019 | Craft Beer JoeStorytelling is nearly as prevalent in craft beer as hops. Ok, that may be a stretch but there’s no denying the importance of storytelling in the beer industry. A brewery’s narrative connects its mission and beer to its customers and community. Sonder Brewing, a young brewery located just north of Cincinnati in Mason, Ohio, has fully embraced the value of a good story in every aspect of its business.
Santa Fe Brewing Co. | Pepe Loco
May 6, 2019 | Holly PriestleyNobody really knows where Pepe came from, but legend has it he was born in the back of a dingy bar. As the story goes, his first drink was tequila. There are rumors his father was a traveling luchador and accidentally left him behind after one of his matches. A pack of coyotes found him and raised him as their own. Surely, you’ll hear a hundred more stories about his origins but one thing is clear: Wherever Pepe Loco came from, El Campeón is here to defend good taste, wear tight pants and give you a victory dance.
The Best Beers to Pair with the Umami Burger
May 6, 2019 | Taylor LaabsLas Vegas is the definition of excess. From swanky pool parties to bougie night clubs and incredible hotels, Sin City is never one to lack in any type of entertainment. I recently took my inaugural trip to Vegas and came back with more than a few stories—with one in particular I’m keen to share.
Vegas has a world-renowned dining scene that offers cuisine that appeals to every palate. Every hotel on the strip boasts a bevy of great fine dining options but tend to lack in their craft beer offerings. While many house robust wine lists that you can’t find anywhere else, the beer pairings are typically not up to par. So, when I checked into my hotel for the trip, the SLS Las Vegas, I pinpointed one dining and beer experience that I was excited to try: The Umami Burger, Beer Garden—and Sports Book (it’s Vegas after all).
What We’re Drinking | May 3, 2019
May 3, 2019 | Pam CatoeBetween avoiding spoilers for Game of Thrones and Avengers Endgame, and then being stressed out watching the battle scenes in both movies, (assuming you could see the Battle of Winterfell), it’s been one exausting week. Hopefully you have recovered from both and another weekend is upon us. Here is an impressive lineup of craft beers to try courtesy of your PorchDrinking team in this week’s What We’re Drinking.
4 Noses Brewing Company | ‘Bout Effin’ Time
May 3, 2019 | Seth GarlandSo many apostrophes. With all the hub-bubbin’ about 4 Noses new Boulder taproom and sour barrel-aging facility, one of the Broomfield-based brewery’s newest creations might have been a bit lost in in the shuffle.
‘Bout Effin’ Time is 4 Noses‘ first Imperial IPA, released at the end of March this year. For those who love hops and would enjoy a callback to the pre-sour-crazy days of hoppy beer’s heydey, this is a can to try and get your nose in.
5 Questions with Deschutes Brewery’s Director of Product Development, Veronica Vega
May 2, 2019 | Taylor Laabs 1Consistency is hard to replicate in any industry; it’s especially difficult in the craft beer market. Churning out a consistently excellent product that resonates with consumers and drives a positive bottom line is no small feat; even for the most established brewers, like Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery.
Amidst the sustained success of their hallmark IPA, Fresh Squeezed, Deschutes has brought new beers and new branding into the fold to better compete with a slew of newcomers and new beer styles. Amidst all of this market churn, it’s important to have a consistent element; which is where Veronica Vega, Deschutes’ Director of Product Development comes in.
Here’s How Thor Ended Up Drinking Creature Comforts in Avengers Endgame
May 2, 2019 | Tristan ChanIn an alternate timeline of the Marvel comics, Thor, the God of Thunder, could have become the God of Craft Beer. Craft beer nerds who’ve also seen Avengers Endgame, might have noticed several cameo appearances by one of craft beer’s fastest rising brands, Athens, GA’s Creature Comforts Brewing, and now we know how that all came to be.
RoHa Brewing Project | Shambo Juicy IPA
May 2, 2019 | Tim HaranPuns and wordplay are all but de rigueur when it comes to naming craft beers these days. For RoHa Brewing Project, a beer named Shambo seemed so obvious; yet perhaps a little too clever.
Casey Brewing & Blending Opening Second Tasting Room Location
May 2, 2019 | Tristan ChanOne of the country’s most prolific sour ale producers, Casey Brewing and Blending is about to become a little more accessible. The Colorado-based brewery announced yesterday via social media, that it will be opening up a second tasting room location in downtown Glenwood Springs, just six miles from its current facility.

May 1, 2019 | Pam CatoeAustin’s burgeoning beer scene continues to grow despite naysayers touting a looming burst in the craft beer bubble. We’ve Got Your Bock | The Basics of Bock Styles
May 1, 2019 | David Nilsen 1Germans love their beer, and they love to drink a lot of it, which means most German styles need to be crisp and fairly low in alcohol to support extended drinking sessions in those gorgeous beer gardens you keep drooling over on Instagram. When I say the words “German beer,” you most likely picture a glass of pale, brilliantly clear Pilsner, or perhaps a stein of amber-colored Märzen (Oktoberfest). Maybe you think of a curvy vase of cloudy Hefeweizen that’s the color of a wheat field. All of those refreshing styles can make a sunny day even better, but it gets pretty cold in Germany during the winter months, and one family of German lager styles—Bocks—have the strength to stand up to the season’s cruelest weather. Urban Chestnut Brewing Co. | Big Shark Grapefruit Radler
May 1, 2019 | Jordan PalmerThe legend of the radler dates back nearly a century to post World War I Germany, when an innkeeper named Franz Xaver Kugler, opened a tavern and tried to capitalize on the newest craze of bicycling by working to have a bike path built right to his establishment.
On the day that thousands of bicyclists showed up demanding a beer, Kugler realized he would not have enough. He quickly remembered a stash of lemon soda he had, cut it 50/50 with his beer supply, and ultimately saved the day and gave birth to a legend.
Revolution Brewing Finds Sustained Success, Growth in Their Hero IPA Series
April 30, 2019 | Taylor LaabsSometimes you take the best things in life for granted. Chicago’s craft beer foundation is built on excellent ales like Anti-Hero and Daisy Cutter, but they no longer generate the lines and Untappd check-ins of past years. It’s not their fault—Chicago drinkers have so many great craft beer options at their disposal that it often becomes overwhelming. So how do you consistently churn out excellent flagships while appealing to the “newness” decree of today’s craft beer drinker?
One valid option is Revolution Brewing’s Hero series. With taproom-only releases, unique 6-pack offerings and comic-inspired variety packs, the Hero line has helped the city’s largest independent brewer stand out from the fray and consistently provide something new to the masses. Each new offering allows Head Brewer Jim Cibak a chance to flex his brewing muscles in new and exciting ways. His latest notable creation is Cryo-Hero. I spoke to Jim and the Revolution team about the new Hero variant, the complexities of that brewing process and what other exciting beers they have planned for the coming months.
FlyteCo Brewing | RWY 5 Pale Ale
April 30, 2019 | Holly PriestleyFlyteCo Brewing is a new aviation-themed brewery located in the Berkeley neighborhood of Denver and their reputation is taking off. Although they only opened their doors on March 9, their tasting room has been consistently packed with happy beer drinkers. It’s no surprise why they’re so popular: Every beer has been delicious, the space is unique with plenty of seating and it’s staffed with knowledgeable beertenders.
Chicago Quick Sips | April 29
April 29, 2019 | Rachel MorrisonIf there’s ever been a more urgent time to clone yourself, it’s now. With summer on the horizon in Chicago (despite the weekend snow storm), there’s LOTS coming up on the beer front. Illinois Craft Beer Week kicks off with Beer Under Glass (BUG) May 10, but there’s also plenty to celebrate before then, and why wait? It’s already a big weekend for Star Wars and taco fans, but there’s three important beer events coming up this Saturday, May 4.
