Event Recap | Half Acre Beer Co. Big North II
August 24, 2017 | Taylor LaabsOn a weekend usually dedicated to the high-flying Air and Water Show, Half Acre Beer Co. delivered its own high-octane experience at their second annual The Big North beer festival. The Big North II was a celebration of Half Acre’s 10 years of business; and it also was a moment to open its Balmoral facility to the public for the very first time, and it did not disappoint.
Brewery Showcase | Islamorada Beer Company
August 24, 2017 | Anna Dacosta 4Located in the Upper Florida Keys, Islamorada takes on popularity for being the fishing capital of the world. Islamorada Beer Company has been providing the locals with quality craft beer since 2014, when a group of friends were inspired to brew styles that would complement the Florida way of life. The hot weather, mixed with outdoor activities, does not change the desire to enjoy a quality brew. Ever since Islamorada Beer Company was launched, their goal was to brew beer, that was drinkable in warm weather and they have been doing so ever since. Read More

Book Review & Interview | The Homebrewer’s Almanac
August 23, 2017 | David NilsenThe Homebrewer’s Almanac: A Seasonal Guide to Making Your Own Beer from Scratch (Countryman Press, 2016) by Marika Josephson, Aaron Kleidon and Ryan Tockstein
The folks at Scratch Brewing Co. are connected to the land around their brewery in ways few other brewers can boast. Secluded in the woods near Ava in southern Illinois, the Scratch gang doesn’t just use local malt and hops, they pull the ingredients that make their beers so unique from the terrain of the surrounding forest. Tree bark, leaves, mushrooms, berries, nuts, flowers, even plants many of us have been trained to think of as weeds—it’s all fair game for brewers Aaron Kleidon and Marika Josephson. Consequently, their beers have a quality of place—terroir, to use the fancy parlance—few other brews have.

Only in Colorado Does the Governor’s Residence Host a Beer Festival
August 22, 2017 | Zoe LantermanThe golden rays of the Colorado setting sun cast shadows upon laughing faces at this year’s Brews and Bites event. Set to the backdrop of the Governor’s sprawling backyard garden, some of Colorado’s finest breweries and dining establishments were paired together to bring event goers unique and flavorful tasting experiences while mingling with Governor Hickenlooper himself.
Brewery Showcase | Charleville Brewing Company & Tavern
August 22, 2017 | Jordan PalmerAs a solo beer writer with a full time job, I’ve come this realization—I won’t be able to attend every new brewery opening, and I won’t be able to drink every new beer.
This has been worrisome, but after speaking with a few owners and managers of local craft breweries, I now understand that most beer media will cover grand openings, but that the effect wears off pretty quick. It’s reminding the beer loving public months later about what’s happening and what’s new that will pay off for everyone. So with that in mind, I’m not going to worry about missing the grand openings, but rather let each new brewery work out its kinks before writing a feature on them, their beer and potentially their menu. This will also allow you and I, the reader, to benefit from multiple visits to the brewery, which is frankly more fun anyway.
Recently, I paid a second and third visit to what is now the closest craft brewery to my home, Charleville Brewing Company & Tavern located at 2101 Chouteau Avenue in St. Louis, MO..
The Best Craft Brewery Social Posts from #Eclipse2017
August 22, 2017 | Taylor Laabs 1Like many Americans, I spent a good portion of my Monday enjoying the hype and pure spectacle that was #Eclipse2017. It’s not every day that you get to witness such a historical astrological event, so it was cool to see the pure visceral excitement folks around the nation emitted when the sun obscured the moon for a brief moment this afternoon.
That said, the actual eclipse was only part of the fun, as both consumer brands and craft breweries showcased their best eclipse-themed posts to be part of the viral social moment. Here are some of my favorites from the craft beer space. Read More
Elevation Beer Company | Elevation Pilsner
August 22, 2017 | Sue BjorkmanCreated for celebration—that’s the genesis of Elevation Pilsner. And it shows. It may not seem like the reason for creating a beer would make a difference in the taste, but somehow it does. It’s a light gold, thirst-quenching beer with surprising bursts of fruity (is that honeysuckle?) and earthy flavors. With an IBU level of 40, it’s more of a happy beer than a hoppy one. And that’s alright with me.
Elevation Beer Company opened their doors in Poncha Springs (“Crossroads of the Rockies”) in Chaffee County, Colorado in 2012. When it found itself doing very well indeed four years later, the brewers said, “Hey, let’s celebrate!” For brewers, the height of celebration is getting really creative by unleashing their considerable chemist and artist skills.
Brewery Showcase | Blackberry Farm Brewery
August 21, 2017 | Ben LolliWhat is Blackberry Farm? That is the question. As we drove past a beautiful white fence deep in the Smoky Mountains overlooking a gorgeous lake, I had to ask that question.
Blackberry Farm Brewery is an award-winning brewery, but that is only one portion of their operation. For over 40 years, Blackberry Farm has been a culinary destination. From that, they have grown into one of the countries finest luxury resorts. There, one can retreat to a relaxing, outdoor adventure wonderland of awesome. Upscale overnight cottages, spas, dining, world-class wine, liquors and, yes, amazing beers.

This two-day event will include a welcome reception on the evening of Thursday, September 7, which will be followed by the Brewers’ Symposium itself on Friday, September 8. Midnight Sun Brewing Company | Pride
August 21, 2017 | Kurt BevilacquaA lot of people have the wrong impression of Alaska. As I sat underneath the sunlight at a time that most places would be pitch black, I poured myself a beer from the appropriately named Midnight Sun Brewing Company and realized the fact that the state is barely glanced upon as a destination for beer lovers from the lower 48.
BREAKING | 2017 GABF’s New, Returning & Missing Breweries
August 19, 2017 | Tristan Chan 1Each year one of the most exciting aspects of the Great American Beer Festival is the ability to explore and sample some of the country’s best new breweries that have emerged on the scene. Additionally, it can be equally as rewarding to revisit some familiar faces you may only get to try once each year at the country’s largest beer showcase. However with the growing nature of the festival, and the Brewer’s Association’s move to a lottery system, we also tend to lose some familiar friends. As we’ve done each year, we’ve broken down the new / returning breweries as well as those who sadly aren’t coming back for this year’s Great American Beer Festival.
BREAKING | 2017 Great American Beer Festival List of Attending Breweries
August 18, 2017 | Tristan ChanOver 800 Breweries. 4 Sessions. 3 Days. Nearly 4000 beers. 60,000 attendees. This year’s Great American Beer Festival is back and primed for its 36th Anniversary. The field has finally been set, and we … Read More
What We’re Drinking | August 18, 2017
August 18, 2017 | Dan BortzIt would appear that the PorchDrinkers had a slow week. Personally, I found that I was getting too fat. This fatness led to a regimented, but not necessarily strict, diet and a week of “detox.” Not to make excuses, but I wouldn’t be surprised if other members of the PorchDrinking staff are finding themselves in the same boat. Sometimes you just need a short break from beer. Luckily, we always have a few die-hards to keep us afloat! This is What We’re Drinking.

August 18, 2017 | Taylor LaabsWhether it’s in a can, bottle or on-draft, craft beer can be consumed in many ways. Now, thanks to a new state law backed by Chicago suburban brewery Noon Whistle Brewing, there will be a new way to drink: cans with completely removable lids.
