There are plenty of blurred lines when marketing in the craft beer industry, but when it’s tastefully done a beer can really stand out in the crowd. Atlanta’s own Elsewhere Brewing once again nailed that feat with the new release in their “Beer For a Cause” series. The new release in the series, Save the Sacks Helles Lager, takes testicular cancer to heart and in an obvious way. Austin, TX’s Live Oak Brewing Co. is known for its commitment to tradition in brewing European-style beers. Launched in 1997, they have been brewing old-world lagers and ales with more than just a nod to tradition for 25 years. Schwarzer Rauch (Black Smoke), a smoked black lager, is brewed in the tradition still carried on by breweries in Bamberg, Germany, who still smoke the malt for their beers.

Cold IPAs and clean foeder-aged beers are two styles that have recently grown in popularity. The former offering a cleaner crisper take on American IPAs and the latter imparting a slightly woody and light vanilla characteristic to Lagers, these are exciting takes on well established styles. While no natural overlap between these is apparent, Cerebral Brewing thought otherwise and created a new style, Foeder Cold IPA, an innovation first expressed by Elegant Solution.

Perhaps nothing makes brewers beam more than when one of their beer babies—and a lager at that—becomes a commercial success. For Jeff Bunk, director of operations for Proper Brewing Co., that’s the story of Whispers of the Primordial Sea.
He’d had his recipe for the smoked Helles with pineapple tucked away since his days working at a cidery in Oregon. Then, in late 2020, Proper put the beer on draft as a one-off. And in mid-2021 Whispers of the Primordial Sea hit the Utah market in 16-ounce cans. It became an instant hit.

Odell Brewing Co. Five Points Brewhouse | Meanderin’ Orange IPA

It is not groundbreaking to say that Odell Brewing Company produces a wide variety of solid beers. That same Fort Collins tradition extended into the Five Points neighborhood in Denver in 2018. The 10-barrel brewhouse spans two floors, with 16 taps providing patrons with exclusive beers from Five Points and Odell standards from its Fort Collins brewery. While there are seven IPAs on tap in the Five Points brewhouse, its Meanderin’ Orange IPA is an outlier we recommend you try.
