Craft Breweries Declare Their Independence with BA’s Official Seal
June 27, 2017 | Tristan ChanAs the craft beer industry begins to wade through the murky waters of distinguishing itself from other non-craft entities, the Brewers Association has decided to make the distinction even more clear. This morning the Boulder-based national trade organization announced the creation of an official seal to help independently owned craft breweries for qualifying members.
Event Recap | FIBArk Whitewater Festival
June 27, 2017 | Sue Bjorkman 1Feature image credit: FIBArk Facebook page.
Pretty much Anywhere USA can host a music fest. Even a beer fest can find home in plenty of locales. But for a funky festival like FIBArk, it takes a river. In this case, it’s the Arkansas River rushing through Salida in Chaffee County, Colorado. Famous for whitewater rafting, this wild stretch of water is a natural playground for kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, tubes and fly fishing. So FIBArk (First in Boating on the Arkansas) celebrates the transformation that happens when the snowmelt turns the river into a thrilling, rapid-filled adventureland.
Introducing New Belgium’s Wood Cellar Reserve Series and Farewell to Lips of Faith
June 27, 2017 | Tristan ChanNew Belgium Brewing Company, one of craft beer’s most storied establishments is reimagining their approach toward specialty beer releases. Yesterday, the Fort Collins-based brewery announced the launch of their Wood Cellar Reserve program described as “a series of very rare, small batch wild & sour ales expertly aged by the most award-winning sour brewery in America.”
Grumpy Old Men Brewing Company | Aska Pale Ale
June 27, 2017 | John Baum 1ABV: 5.8%
Almost as refreshing as their beer is the attitude that Steve Weber and Chipley McKnight bring to the modern day craft beer industry. They are the two grumpy old men behind Grumpy Old Men Brewing in Blue Ridge, Georgia, and they are not looking to be hip or game changers. Nor are they interested in some of the funkier trends that tend to occupy the minds of today’s craft beer maestros.

Merging Brewing Ingredients and Techniques Into Cooking: A Recap of Brewed Food Cincinnati
June 26, 2017 | Craft Beer JoeChances are you enjoy beer; that’s why you clicked through to read this. And I would bet that you prefer good beer, I mean really good beer. You focus on hunting down rare beers and are always on the hunt for brews that contain new ingredients and push the boundaries of what you think craft beer can be.
But what about food? Do you pursue food with the same passion? For me, I focus a lot of attention on what I drink but not nearly as much on expanding my culinary world. That’s where Brewed Food aims to change our culture.
Event Recap | Door County Beer Festival
June 26, 2017 | Taylor LaabsFeature image courtesy of Taylor Laabs
The folks at the Door County Beer Festival went above and beyond to create a fantastic beer drinking event on a sunny June Saturday that embodied everything that is great about the Wisconsin beer experience.
There were 58 breweries in attendance with more than 35 of those coming from a Wisconsin area code, but it wasn’t just the familiar brews of New Glarus, Karben4 and Capital Brewery that made this former Badger’s heart happy. This festival had great cheese, good people and a fun-loving vibe that exuded throughout every person you met. No brewer was off limits, no question too stupid – Door County Beer Fest welcomed all – as long as you had an empty stomach.
What We’re Drinking | June 23, 2017
June 23, 2017 | Dan BortzI didn’t think the PorchDrinkers were sampling much beer this week. However, when I asked around, I learned that they had been drinking a ton of great beer. As it turns out, they were just having too much fun! They didn’t want to spoil it by sending pictures to the lame What We’re Drinking guy. They’re just too dang cool to be associated with a wet blanket like me. I get it. While I’m in my room eating a gallon of ice cream by myself, feel free to peruse this week’s What We’re Drinking. You can let yourselves out when you’re done. I don’t think you want to talk to me anyway.
Ultimate 6er | Friday Night (Summer Edition)
June 23, 2017 | Taylor LaabsOh Friday nights; they offer so much intrigue, so much anticipation for what’s to come. Regardless of the myriad of plans you might have for the weekend, one of my most cherished Friday night activities is cracking open that first beer of the weekend. It just seems crisper, more refreshing and full of unbridled possibility.
Event Recap | Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Philadelphia
June 23, 2017 | Kurt BevilacquaAfter just a short time in line to get through security and ID checks, I made my way into the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, PA. I grabbed a sample glass with a green Sierra Nevada’s logo stamped on it and thanked the volunteers as I made my way into the festival grounds. Once in, I scanned the venue to see which tent to hit first. It can sometimes seem overwhelming when you first get into a beer festival, seeing the vast amount of choices with all the breweries lined up one after another. No choice is a bad one, but, personally, I was looking to begin the day off right at Beer Camp.
Three Taverns Brewery | Rapturous
June 23, 2017 | Sarah DuffyABV: 5.0% | IBU: 5
Three Taverns Brewery’s Rapturous is a great sour no matter what the time of year, but seems especially refreshing during the long, hot summer days. Its fruit forward palate makes it especially drinkable for long days at the pool, beach or shootin’ the hooch. And at 5%, you should still be feeling OK by the end of the day.

Some people plan their vacations around tropical beaches, ancient ruins or exotic cities. While all of the above are fantastic options, I decided to plan my vacation this year around hiking and beer. This led me to the shocking realization that despite living in Pennsylvania, I’ve never traveled further north than Boston. How could that be? Read More
Four Summer Solstice Beers to Kick Off the Official Start of Summer
June 21, 2017 | Dan BortzCulturally speaking, summer in America starts on Memorial Day (the last Monday in May), and ends on Labor Day (the first Monday in September). Bookended by these two holiday weekends, summer in the USA has been experienced the same way for decades. Technically speaking though, summer only just began today!
The Summer Solstice, (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) is the day that the sun reaches its northernmost point in relation to the Equator. We have been experiencing the results of this northward migration for weeks. The days have been getting longer and and temperatures have been climbing. Today, all of that change reaches its apex. The exact amount of sunlight you get will vary by your latitude, but Philadelphia, for example, will see a whopping 15 hours and 34 seconds of sunlight today.

Event Preview | 777th Annual Criderfest
June 21, 2017 | Jordan PalmerIn this age of social media, before a new brewery can even make beer or pour a pint, the local beer community is already abuzz about what’s coming. Few brewery openings in recent memory created as much excitement as 2nd Shift’s St. Louis opening this past winter. Their brewery and tap room was new to the area but their beer wasn’t. 2nd Shift began its journey in New Haven, Missouri back in 2010 and exploded onto the local scene with their flagship beer, Art of Neurosis. Now, it’s time to celebrate seven years of brewing, and owners Steve and Libby Crider are inviting all of us to a party, and Steve’s beard will be in attendance.

Old Irving Brewing | Rat Pack
June 21, 2017 | Bliss BillingsleyABV: 7% | IBU: 20
Just like their namesake, the Rat Pack Belgian Dubbel is a classic and timeless beer made by Old Irving Brewing. When you close your eyes, each sip transports you to “simpler times” when 1960’s crooners dominated the radio, and you’re enjoying a classic cocktail in a fedora. The flavor profile is complex yet balanced for easy drinking. The warm alcohol flavor soothes the taste buds. The snifter-style glass mimics that of a cognac to top off your time travel. Read More
