Old Nation Brewing Company | Boss Tweed

I realize I always go on about how hard it is for breweries to stand out in Michigan because there are so many of them. But Michigan is fifth in the nation with more than 300 breweries, so it’s not hard to imagine how easy it is for a brewery to fall through the cracks. In 2015, this was likely on the minds of Travis Fritts and Nate Rykse when they founded Old Nation Brewing Company in Williamston, Michigan. As it turns out, they had absolutely nothing to worry about, even after a bit of a slow start.
What We’re Drinking | February 7, 2020

One down, eleven to go. We’ll be leaving stouts, porters, and barleywines behind and move onto crispier, easy drinking lawnmower beer as spring blooms. Keep an eye out for big IPAs dry-hopped with floral forward aromatic hops, and super citrusy hazy IPAs utilizing some new exciting hop varietals. With GABF having another new IPA category, expect to see more “Emerging” IPAs (Category 65) being brewed across the country. As for what we’re drinking?

A beer is only as good as its water: It is the starting point and foundation from which all else grows and changes. Libertine Brewing Company wanted one of their staple beers to evoke the essence of the place they call home—the central coast of California—so they decided to use local, Pacific Coast salty sea waters to add the traditional brininess in a Gose.
Costa Rica & Panama Join Forces to Host Indie Beer Cup

The fourth edition of the Indie Beer Cup will be held in Central America in the beautiful Costa Rica and vibrant Panamá City. This particular competition stands out amongst various events because it’s designed exclusively for independent brewers on an international scope.

We here on the Pacific Team are hella stoked on San Francisco Beer Week 2020 and enjoyed both the San Francisco and Berkeley media previews. Now that SFBW is knocking on our door, what better way to get pumped then finding some killer events to attend?! The first night, February 7th, is a no brainer – SFBW Opening Night Gala on Pier 35, put on by the Bay Area Brewers Guild. Our Team has combed through the massive amount of events being put on over the 10 day craft beer week, and honestly still looking cause wow there is a lot happening, and found some can’t miss events for ya’ll!

Started just about 11 years ago by Melanie (Mel) Pierce, it was the idea to help the community become more educated about breast cancer and checking for early signs while you get to support research foundations fight against the big C. After yet another successful event last year, Good Beer Hunting’s Uppers and Downers returns to Thalia Hall on February 23 with two sessions bringing together some of the most iconic coffee roasters, breweries, and distilleries under one roof.

The 92nd Academy Awards represents some major changes going on in the world of Hollywood. From the first South Korean movie nominated to Best Picture to streaming services fighting against classic studios; we can’t keep our attention away from the prestigious awards ceremony. Yet people always ask the same question every year: Do the Oscars matter in the grand scheme of things?
My answer is always yes. Even if something you don’t like wins, the goal is to expose others to new cinema and respect the work done by so many unsung heroes in the industry. After all, these are values you learn in the craft beer world when trying new styles or finding out how beer is made. So I’ve cobbled together the best six beers to have with the nine Best Picture Nominees.
Box of Chocolates Beer Collaboration | Four Chicago-Area Breweries Celebrate Valentine’s Day

Move over Cupid. Oswego Brewing, Riverlands Brewing, Skeleton Key Brewing and Wolfden Brewing have concocted the perfect method for which to achieve romantic bliss: the Box of Chocolates Beer Collaboration. The multi-brewery Valentine’s Day beer package is more than just a treat, though, because the beers also serve as beautiful demonstrations of the versatility of stouts (or stout-like ales), which is fitting for February (a.k.a. Stout Month).

It’s a chilly Friday afternoon in Denver, in the Bluebird District 2.5 miles directly east of the State Capitol, and the Cerebral Brewing taproom is buzzing. Not that this is unusual, of course. The four-year-old brewery frequently draws a big crowd to its bright taproom, one side of which uses academic papers as wallpaper. After all, the brewery’s motto is “An Academic Pursuit,” an honorable principle that guides these innovative brewers to offer beers that run the gamut. One of those is Character Reference, a foeder Vienna Lager.

Dry January | A Month in Review

On January 1st, I nursed the worst hangover I hope to have all year. Your typical headache/nausea/gilt hangover combination only made possible by mixing all the different types of drinks as if the new year actually started with a clean slate when the clock struck midnight. I had already planned to do dry January for the second year in a row, but this helped to reaffirm my decision, fast.

What does adventure mean to you? Is it the adrenaline rush of accomplishing something huge? Is it physically exploring a new region? Is it the urge to leave your comfort zone? To Joe Connolly, director of Springdale Beer Co., it’s that last one. He also believes in the same notion for IPAs. “We believe that real activity deserves real beer,” Connolly notes. “To us, this is what IPA signifies: an urge to push the envelope, leave our comfort zone and simply put, get out there.”
And that’s what Springdale is all about. As the experimental offshoot of Jack’s Abby, Springdale has been in pursuit of adventure since its inception. By delving into sours, wild ales, barrel-aged beers and more, they have numerous successful experiments under their belt. They released their flagship IPA, Springdale IPA, in January 2020.

San Francisco Beer Week Event Recap | San Francisco Media Preview

San Francisco Beer Week, February 7th through the 16th, spans much larger than the name might suggest. So when the Bay Area Brewers Guild threw media events this year, they decided to split them into two. One that took place on January 21st, with a write up found here. The second taking place this last Tuesday, January 28th with representatives of their Coastal, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley chapters of the guild.
