10th Annual Illinois Craft Beer Week Kicks Off

In 2018 a lot of changes happened to Illinois’ celebration of craft beer. For the first time, Chicago Craft Beer Week was renamed to Illinois Craft Beer Week (ICBW), Beer Under Glass (BUG) moved to a Friday and the event lasted two weeks.
2019’s Illinois Craft Beer Week will follow suit to the 2018 event as BUG will continue to kick-off the festivities on Friday, May 10, at the Garfield Park Conservatory. However, ICBW will last just one week.

I may or may not have watched Beyoncé’s Coachella performance that premiered on Netflix multiple times. I can’t help it, she was incredible. The band and dancers were unbelievable. I can’t imagine how awesome that must have been live. We also learn that her discipline to prepare did not include beer, which makes sense even though that brings a tear to every craft beer lover’s eye. It’s okay Queen B, we have been drinking for you. Turns out myself and the PorchDrinkers are not preparing for a huge music festival performance, so bring on the beers in this weeks What We’re Drinking.
Tour de Brewtah | The Thirst is Out There

No need to travel to a galaxy far, far away. Or to another dimension. The 10th Annual Tour de Brewtah—dubbed Spaced-X—is set to blast off right in our own backyard.
Scheduled for May 4—May the Fourth Be With You, after all—the bicyclist-meet-brewery space-themed event brings together cyclists and craft beer enthusiasts to “tour our ever-expanding local ‘brewiverse.'”
Colorado Brewers Guild Bids Farewell to Steve Kurowski

Over the past decade, there may be no more iconic figure, and beard, that has holistically represented Colorado craft beer, than Steve Kurowski. Today, his tenure is coming to a close after nine years of service, to become Marketing Director for Laws Whiskey House. While serving as the Operations, Marketing and Events Director for the Colorado Brewers Guild (CBG), Kurowski not only helped grow the organization from just under 100 members to now over 250, but also brought stability and greater national awareness to Colorado’s craft beer scene.
Brewery Bhavana | Patina Gold #1

Regret is hard to live with, especially when that thing was right in front of you. My story begins at Brewery Bhavana in downtown Raleigh. My wife and I attended one of their private parties where they served up some of their signature dishes and drinks. Edamame and ginger dumplings, pork and mushroom bao, an open bar featuring many of their core brews and if that weren’t enough, at either end of the room they popped bottles of barrel-aged beauties. To try it all, you either had to be super lucky or a pushy jerk. For better or worse, I was neither. So, I missed out on a beer that I thought would be gone forever: Patina Gold #1, a peach and apricot sour aged for four months in a Cabernet foeder.
Fortunately, Bhavana had the good sense to produce more. Even more fortunately, I found a bottle of Patina Gold sitting in the dusty back room of Chapel Hill’s Bottle Rev. Given the price ($14 a bottle), I had to think twice about buying it, but only twice. The regret from earlier, missed opportunity was gnawing at me.
Book Review & Interview | Marika Josephson on Farmhouse Beer

A new chapbook by Scratch Brewing co-founder and brewer Marika Josephson lays out a blueprint for what it means to run a true farmhouse brewery in the 21st century.
“There is an ironic disconnect in craft beer in which drinkers care a lot about beer being made locally but don’t know or don’t care about where the ingredients themselves are from,” said Josephson when I interviewed her for a story for Civil Eats in November 2017.
The quote could serve as a thesis statement for her new chapbook Keeping the “Farm” in “Farmhouse Beer”, published by Good Beer Hunting in 2018.

McFate Brewing Acquires the Rights to Fate Brewing Name

After an arduous legal battle and three years later, McFate Brewing Company in Scottsdale, Arizona is getting their name back. Fate.
If you are unfamiliar with the story, back in 2016, Fate Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado filed suit against then Fate Brewing Company in Scottsdale, Arizona for the rights to the name. Fate Brewing Company in Scottsdale was forced to rebrand to McFate, even though the two breweries had co-existed for more than three years under the same name. The reaction to the lawsuit by fans of both breweries was swift, with an outpouring of support for McFate and an overwhelming resentment toward Fate Brewing Company.

On a Saturday night not too long ago, a hell of a storm blew through San Antonio. Overnight rains are certainly welcome to the area, considering the region’s aquifer-based water supply is highly dependent on the spring rainfall. What wasn’t so welcome, however, was the wind that accompanied the storm. The nice thing about the craft brewing industry is that there’s always something new to drink and learn. Both happened to me at Allagash Brewing’s Saison Day at Off Color Brewing’s on April 6, 2019. I wasn’t expecting to find a beer on tap with a hazy color and a viscous texture that would showcase the bright and colorful Saison and Farmhouse ale creations from the likes of Off Color, Allagash, Side Project and Brasserie Dupont. But there I was, savoring every drop of Birds Fly South Ale Project’s Rustic Sunday, a deliciously savory yet fruity Farmhouse ale created via the Solera aging style. I had never heard of Solera aging before but after having one of Birds Fly South’s (BFS) brews, I knew I had to find out more.
Weyerbacher Brewing Sells to Investment Group & Declares Bankruptcy

After 24 years of production, Weyerbacher Brewing Company has announced the sale of 55 percent of the brewery to 1518 Holdings LLC, a Philadelphia-based private investment group, and has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Weyerbacher Brewing Company is best known for their high gravity beers. The brewery has a seasonal and year-round lineup that includes heavy hitters like Insanity at 13.3% ABV, Quad at 11.8% ABV, and TINY at 11.8% ABV, as well as more sessionable options like Last Chance IPA at 5.9% and Mellow Monks, a Belgian-style golden ale, at 4.5% ABV.

As a beer drinker, you’re familiar with wild ales. You’re familiar with saisons, too. But wild American saison may be new territory for you. For those unfamiliar to the term, it’s open to a lot of interpretation. This is where Art Dekkera from Springdale comes in. Springdale, an experimental offshoot of Jack’s Abby Brewing in Framingham, MA, is known for its wide variety of beers that range from IPAs to sours. So when they announced a new wild American saison, the style certainly sounded like a beer they would brew.
