The calendar says April, but for millions of sports fans it’s still March Madness. The 68 teams that qualified for the tournament have been reduced to the Final Four, who will battle in Indianapolis on Saturday. Will you be drinking a beer while watching the game? If so, what beer? Let’s be honest, picking which beer to enjoy can sometimes be tough. That got us thinking: If a there was a beer style competition, what styles would make the Final Four of Beer Styles? April Fool’s Day is both the dream and the nightmare of every brewery’s marketing team. With peoples’ expectations already primed for nonsense and whimsy, it is an opportunity for the industry to reflect on its own excesses and eccentricities in a fun way. While we joke that being able to tell the difference between the joke and reality has become more difficult in recent years, that only further underscores the incredible creativity and inventiveness of the craft beer industry as a whole. Here are some of our favorites from this year.

RuPaul’s Drag Race is daring to do things differently in its 13th season. The show has been a savior of isolation, stretching over months as we tune in every Friday evening. The queens have been sequestered and sanitized every step of the way in filming the iconic competition during a pandemic. Each week the panel of judges sit six feet apart and critique the diverse array of queens for their charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. This season stands apart for sharing the experiences of entertainers who have had their industry and lives shaken by the tumultuous events of 2020.
Seven queens have sashayed away and we’ve come to a perfect six pack of remaining queens that would make RuPaul scream, “Bring back my beers!”

Rake Beer Project, in Muskegon, Michigan, is less than two years old, and whether you love them or hate being told to stay home to help curb a relentless global pandemic, they’ve probably slowed your newsfeed scroll at least twice in 2020. And, like it or not (trigger warning): they’re about to do it a third time.
At the onset of Covid-19 flipping Earth into The Upside Down, Michigan’s Governor Gretchen Whitmer was unfazed after being slapped with a belittling nickname, “That Woman From Michigan,” by (three guesses) “That President From New York.” Twitter deflected the shade and clapped back on her behalf: Photoshop helped place a pair of Cartier sunglasses (known as “Buffs” in Detroit) on Whitmer, and The Michigangster was soon rebranded “Big Gretch.” In a public display of support for the governor’s Stay at Home Order, Rake joined the party, threw a non-red hat in the ring, and made a beer in her honor.
